The Outer Worlds - Obsidian's new game, like Borderlands meets Fallout: New Vegas

  • 🔧 Actively working on site again.
Ok, I actually own it on steam. Will mod and play.

Edit: Actually the mods look overwhelming / feature packed. Should I just try the base vanilla game first? I have all expansions. I did this with witcher 3 and it was sweet (played through vanilla, then played through again with mods).

NV is great, the actual game play (ie the shooting) isn't so hot because it runs on Bugthesda's old creation engine. Story telling, interactions and choice is top notch.

Mod the ever loving shit out of it. It's the only way to make the gameplay decent. I have never played it Vanilla and never intend to.

I'm very sad because playing Pathologic 2 and Disco Elysium this year broke me. I can't fully enjoy Outer Worlds now. The writing is too immature. "Ha ha, wouldn't it be funny if everyone said Brand Name TM after everything they say? That's a joke about capitalism!"
I guess I am become a boomer now, sans a house :(

I thought the gameplay was fine as well, but it's better with jsawyer applied. That's a mod made by the game's director to make the game harder in various ways, yet it doesn't feel cheap. The main character is way less of a Uber-God with the ability to carry everything and get good at any skill, but enemies go down easier as well.

The Someguy series is good but you can just patch it in later.

I have put 70 minutes into it and the game-play is fine? I like VATS. People said the same about witcher 3 combat. I found vanilla combat fine...
The combat is totally fine. At least, shooting is decent enough, I never messed with melee. Dead Money gives a surprisingly good energy rifle, grab it if that fits your build. Also the completion bonuses are quite useful if you put the time into cleaning out the casino. Old World Blues was also a lot of fun for me, but I have a soft spot for cheesy sci fi.

I always had a laundry list of mods for NV. I didn't do Project Nevada but I know people not satisfied with the combat system love it. You say you like the combat as is which is fine; but I'd recommend you get one mod for combat/guns -- it's called "Accuratized M1" for the "This Machine" and "Battle Rifle" weapons. The Garand in NV is inaccurate as shit to the point where you miss iron sight shots you could make in real life.

Other mods I highly suggest:
The mod that lets you insta-travel to the Lucky 38 on The Strip
The mod that opens The Strip into one entire area like originally intended. There are quite a few mods that do this so pick the one that has the best ratings and reviews.
The mod that gets rid of that annoying ass kid in Freeside next to the Followers' base.

If you're gonna play all the DLCs, get the mod that lets you reduce the percentage of XP you earn during the game. That way you won't hit max level after one DLC, which to me killed all the fun of progression and pacing.
If you play Honest Hearts DLC, get the mod that fixes Joshua Graham's face texture and makes him look burned and wrinkled like his character art.

If you like playing dress up in your RPG games there's a mod that lets you wear facemasks, hats, and glasses all at the same time (you can't do that in Vanilla NV).

Going back to the Outer Worlds, I bit the bullet and got GamePass with the discounted rate, I'll post my impressions of the game here when I get to it on the weekend.
Same here, already got it preloaded via GamePass.

I'm thinking of running a character that's a smooth talker and a scholar at heart, but is willing to solve their problems with a light machine gun and grenade launcher. Not expecting the pinnacle of the RPG genre since I find Obsidian a tad bit overrated (sue me), but it should still be a fun time.

I like being OP :)

Also I got ultra wide 3440x1440 working with ease. I'm surprised this game 'unofficially' supports it. Some of the menu items are screwy but they are tolerable. I will get on top of outer worlds when the positive consensus moves from shill reviewers to consumers that have finished it. I like Obsidians rpg's.

As much as I love my job most of the time, a part of me wishes that sleep was optional just so I can stay up late playing The Outer Worlds tonight.

I'm about 5 hours deep and so far I'm very impressed. The gun play is way better than I expected and it runs buttery smooth on my setup. Contrary to my previous post, I did the same as a couple other people here and just got it through gamepass.

I've done this for 4 days this week. Get home from work, game until 6:30 am, chug a few energy drinks and I'm fine for the day. When i get home tho if I get to a boring part I do wind up falling alseep for an hour or so.

Put a couple of hours into the game, made it to Edgewater, and got Parvati as a companion.

Maybe it's because I'm playing on a standard Xbox One, but the graphics look a bit blurry in some areas, particularly the foliage. I know visuals aren't everything and that this is technically a AA game, but I'm finding it to be kind of distracting out in the wilderness.

The combat is... mixed, to say the least. I think that the Tactical Time Dilation mechanic is a nice alternative to VATS, and I like how you can weaken enemies by shooting them in the balls (a nice callback to the first two Fallout games). However, the shooting feels stiff and the enemies feel too bullet spongy (particularly stings since I'm using a shotgun). Maybe I need to find better weapons and put more points into my combat skills, but so far I find the combat worse than Fallout 4's.

When we get into more of the RPG side of things, I think the game finds its footing there. The dialogue options have decent variety in them, there are skill checks a plenty, there are several different options to tackle quests, and the attributes all feel viable so far (nothing as useless as Charisma in New Vegas). I still need to see how the reputation and faction systems function, but so far this game definitely ticks off the RPG boxes.

All in all, I'm liking what I'm seeing so far. Rough combat and visuals aside, I think this is gonna be a good time.

FFS am I the only person in the world who actually liked Fallout 4?

More importantly though, anyone playing on PC know how hard it pushes the computer? I upgraded for FO4 and I’m hoping to get to the next console cycle before having to upgrade again.
