The Pickle Thread

I love pickles, especially bread and butter. I had a great-aunt who lived in Georgia who actually owned a small pickle business. She'd sell pickled cucumbers and figs and they were actually pretty popular in the area around her home. "Aunt Gert's," that was the name I think.

In fact, I think I'm going to go steal a giant dill out of the fridge right now. Low in calories AND tasty.

I love pickles. Any kind of pickled vegetable is good to me. I grow my own pickling cukes and make my own pickles. Not to toot my own horn, but people love my pickles :pickle: and some years if I'm short on cash, I'll just make my friends a jar or two for their birthdays.

I hate sweet pickles though and I never use sugar or pickling spice. Just water, vinegar, salt, fresh dill (which I also grow myself) , dill seed, and garlic. My mouth is watering...I'm gonna go have one now.

EDIT: Oh, and Japanese-style pickled vegetables. I could eat those all day. A great way to make yourself a little treat is to slice up some veggies - cucumber, carrot, cauliflower, daikon - and pack them in a mixture of mirin and red miso paste ( or just the miso paste) for a day or two. Make a layer at the bottom of a jar or bowl, stick your veggies in, layer more paste over the top, stick it in the fridge, wait two days, and enjoy. And of course you can still use the miso to make soup, so everybody wins.

While I'm at it, does anyone else like umeboshi?

I think they're the saltiest thing I've ever eaten in my life, but they're oddly addicting and great for hangovers if you're feeling barfy. Something about the super-salty brine will temper nausea. Anyone?

Ever thought of selling said pickles? Does your town have a farmer's market or something? That could be something you could do if you are short on cash.

I went to a Japanese restaurant the other night and they gave us small complimentary dishes of what I can only describe as pickle and seaweed salad. It was BOSS.

You know I never considered that before, I usually don't make enough for that, but that's not a bad idea. Thanks! I'll take your suggestion under great consideration.

thanks! I'm sure you could always grow more cucumbers.

That's cute! They should also make a pickle reading light.

Is it wrong that the first thing that popped into my mind was, "Well, that's a crappy vibrator"? That's before I saw that it was a light.

Don't worry, I thought the exact same thing.

The first thing I thought is "I wanna see a woman stick that USB pickle light in her vag."

But I'm a horrible pervert.

there is a reason why I showed you guys the picture and your reactions are why

Speaking of other pickled stuff besides cucumbers, jalapenos are also boss. Had some on saltine crackers for lunch today. Yum.

BACON AND PICKLES?!!!

Those are like, the two best foods in the world!
