The Polyglot Community / Conlangers / General Language Learning Autism - Attention seekers that barely speak the languages they claim, pretentious language creators, grifters shilling language learning scams and more!

Xiaomannyc was cosplaying as a PLA soldier in his lunar new year post.

Good thread. Conlang is such a fucking joke lmao. I used to think it was interesting because of stuff like Klingon or Elvish, but over time I’ve come to realise that most conlangs are just codes and ciphers with a fancy coat of paint.

Polyglots are even worse. As stated many shill common sense techniques alongside utter nonsense. There’s No secret trick to learning another language. You just do it through repetition and study for literal thousands of hours until you don’t sound retarded in said second language. Their ways of teaching easy ways out is incredibly deceitful and deserves heavy criticism.

Also yeah, learning to similar languages at the same time fucking sucks mega dick.

Conlangs require a lot technical knowledge and effort to do well, so it's not surprising most don't go so well. So how Tolkien could do and almost all fantasy authors after couldn't, but that's because the former was a philologist at Oxford, and the latter weren't.
Especially Chinese and Japanese, not a pleasant experience
Other than the former providing a lot of the words for that latter, the two languages aren't that related.

Of course, learning both at the same time as a native speaker of a European language is nuts, as they have so many differences from the native language at you probably need to put a lot of effort into one language just to even get okay in it.

This is a nice thread. I'll make a post bitching about toki pona later. Since this is a thread about language, I feel justified in correcting what I believe to be grammar issues in the opening post.

but that doesn’t mean the community has its problems
Shouldn't this be negated?

He never uploaded the interview, but the guy who he interviewed had leaked the audio of them talking afterwards
This should be whom.

These people have in some ways made it seem like collecting languages like Pokemon even if you aren’t very good at them makes you more superior.
The use of like twice is poor, and more shouldn't be used with a comparative adjective like this.

Although the issue that this schizo is championing is a le
legitimate concern, he does it the worst way possible by a-logging and rambling and talking in circles and spewing word salad and is a cow in his own right.
This is self-explanatory.

Fortunately, nobody has been crazy (yet) to completely deprive their child of a real language and teach them just that, but still, at that early stage in life, wouldn't it be more useful to teach them a real language?
There was a Jew, I believe in Israel, who locked his son in a basement and only spoke some ancient Jewish language to him and, seeing his success, I've read other Jews have followed his example. I should find the source on this.

If anyone who is a fluent or at least advanced speaker of any languages that these polyglots claim to speak are willing to analyze some stuff or if you have more content or suspected grifters to add, then please comment.
I'll gladly volunteer to analyze any Latin issues that arise. Also, Latin is plain better than Esperanto for learning Romance languages. I can't see a single good reason to learn Esperanto. There are real significant works written in Latin, and I'm to understand Esperanto is stuck with translations, and this makes the point clear. I agree with @Glad I couldn't help on depth over breadth in language learning. It's fun to see the Latin in English, and now the ancient Greek in both, but I shouldn't ramble further.

I wouldn't say that it sucks “mega dick,” rather, it's impossible to escape the tedium, no matter how hard you try. You always have to make the tedium work for you, rather than moulding your brain to fit the tedium itself.

I hate when I get recommended Xiaomanyc. Ah yes, this man who can superficially learn simple phrases in languages other than the ones he has been studying for long times is just a gifted genius. As much as I hate the term, these people need to be called out.
Yeah, I watched like two of his videos and now they constantly get recommended to me. I thought it was impressive at first until he did a video about a language I'm familiar with, and his speech was practically incomprehensible. I kind of respect the grift though, he's good at creating the illusion of competency in any given language. Chinese wife, Chinese life.

Maybe I'm just being a whiny bitch here, but this tweet from Matt vs. Japan just bugs me.

I will fully admit that I don't know much about Martin Heidegger, other than he was a German philosopher, wrote dense philosophical texts like a German philosopher would, supported the Nazis and got for all his troubles a Final Fantasy 7 character named after him. However, I am also certain that Matt also knows nothing about Heidegger, and just wanted a cute quote from a deep thunker about the mysterious nature of language.

Also, for anybody who wants to know more about MattvsJapan: his YouTube channel is dead (no updates in year), he's resigned from Refold and has moved to Japan. Seems like there also literal nothing, good or bad, to come from Project Refold, either. Like it never happened.

Isn't Xiaomannyc on payroll with the CCP, I know China pays western youtubers to shill for them.

Is there any actual evidence of this? I know he simps for China but he kinda just comes across as your average Chineaboo.

His Jamaican Patois video is hilarious because he didn't even attempt the cadence or accent, just the words and he fucked those up a few times too. Like I'm super American, no accent, and I've spent relatively limited time in Jamaica, but I easily could have done better.

He really does just learn the conversational basics and repeat them, it does look like he enjoys connecting with different cultures but I hate that he tries to pass himself off as a genius.

I don't know if he's collecting cash from China but that's my theory. He walks on eggshells around Chinese wrong doings.

The sad fact is that the CCP has made so that a China content creator is an either be a pure shill of the regime or a booster for whole country that never mentions anything negative about the country. Those who want to say anything negative about China will condem themselves to exile and working with anti-CCP outlets, which can be a nutty as any of the CCP-shills.

Some late news about Fluyo, the language learning app from a now cripped YouTube polyglot: it held a Kickstarter campaign last April, in which in raised $1.2 million of a original goal of $150,000. According to them, it is the app with highest amount of funding now.

Hope the backers get their money's worth.

Yeah it's very weird, it's almost been memory holed. There were a few people who paid for uproot I had talked to at some point, but there were never any reviews of it, everyone just disappeared. There was a guy on youtube who did an update video, didn't say much, just that it was kinda meh, hasn't updated since. I wonder if the people who paid for it were just looking for an easy way, got scammed, didn't want to admit it was crap after the fact and gave up on learning Japanese.

It's crazy that people paid for that crud since it was well known that ken was a scamming pile of crap. Funny thing is that the uproot website was very much just built off a template. Some guys were putting generic words like "about" at the end of the url and found actual template pages being hosted. "Bill", the subject of the template became an inside joke for a good while.

On a side note, I do poke around r/learnjapanese from time to time for entertainment. Japanese learning is full of troon freaks, so of course random spergouts happen. Maybe I'll have to keep an eye out for stuff to post here.

Edit again: lol why is learnjapanese private now, that's news to me

There is a pretty wide array of language learning subreddits coving a wide range of languages. Most are pretty boring, being slow boards with only occasional posts about how to complete a Duolingo question or such. The main dens of autistic range is r/languagelearning and r/learnjapanese.
