Some posters are definitely being a bit melodramatic about the whole thing. But there is a certain house of horrors aspect to the spectacle of profound self-loathing reflected through cute, whimsical cartoon characters that's no doubt jarring to the uninitiated.

Maybe I've just become desensitized to it all which is also pretty tragic.
