Nope way simpler than that. It's caused by an ingrown hair getting infected and causing a cyst and a cavity (sinus). It may have an exit and entry wound with the sinus as the channel between.

Surgery needs to cut out the thing entirely including the sinus itself because if they don't it can fill up with a cyst again.

Oh yeah, Jeep Ass (Pilonidal Cyst) is a whole fucking thing, can be incredibly painful, one of the worst things you can experience.

Mostly a male phenomenon though so hugely validating.

What you're seeing there is the result of not taking it seriously and getting it attended to. It doesn't self-resolve, just keeps getting worse. I'm guessing that particular example is another complication (e.g. mrsa, necrotizing fasciitis) getting a foothold on top.

Well in the SRS thread was the 19yo guy who got necrotizing fasciitis from his intestinal amhole, maybe this is a similar complication, but caught early enough (If the guy ended up alive, ofc).
One of the reasons why this problem happens in first place, is when the both halves of the body are fused together improperly, something like cleft lip, but on the other end.

Can confirm. The examples online are mostly "whoa dang, we better take a pic of this one, boss" extreme scenarios. Buddy of mine had one though and it was nothing more than a gross ultra mega sore butt-zit full of pus for a couple of weeks until docs went in and took the little cyst baggie out entirely. After the incision healed, he said everything looked/felt normal again. No massive asscheek loss necessary.

Generally yes, but there are a small amount of people who are just naturally prone to cysts and abcesses. PL: I knew a guy back in my early twenties who was active, ate well, took care of his hygiene etc and who always had at least one inflamed cyst or abcess active at any one time. It drove him insane and it got to the point where he wouldn't go to the doctor for anything less than a tennis ball sized pustule, because it was just an endless merry-go-round of inflammation, antibiotics, a week or two of peace, then inflammation again... he said that his father had exactly the same problem so it was very likely genetically linked. It was insane... we doing tertiary studies together, we'd say goodbye Friday afternoon and on Monday morning he'd walk into class looking like a Cronenberg movie extra, with multiple huge swellings on his face and neck that had appeared almost overnight.

So yes, many abcesses can be linked to bad habits, but as with many other health issues, genetics can really fuck you over. A lot of time, cyst-caused abcesses aren't even infected, your immune system is just being stupid and thinks that the cyst is a foreign body and sends the defence force in to get rid of it.

Tl;dr looking after your body is incredibly important and that can usually help to keep these sorts of issues under control, but there's always some unlucky bugger who gets screwed over for no reason at all.
