On a side note after Hari seems to belong to those group of "comedians" that think "oh, look how racist that is, isn't that so racist you guys" is funny.

And they tend to act at least a bit smug about it as well.

I don't get it since all the Simpsons characters are pretty much based on stereotypes- the Simpsons themselves are deconstructions of the squeaky clean sitcom families of the 50s and 80s, Wiggum is a parody of the cops, Burns after business owner...What makes Apu so special? Nobody is that idiotic to sit down and watch and say "Yeah, that's a true Indian".

I've been having this discussion elsewhere and it seems what it comes down to is that we need to have a show that is created, produced and focuesed on South Asian Americans, a concept that is still rather very limited given the way Hollywood works. as someone who lived in Scotland for 12 years, I can say for a fact that Groundskeeper Willie is a national treasure to the people of Scotland.

That's Daikari King Mykan level stuff there. They could get rid of the character now, but all those years of previous episodes are another. Even the ones that aren't Apu-centered would have to take a splicing (like the Pin Pals one).

And thus, makes a situation where either option will result in outrage- Cut him out, the show's fans (understandably) rage at how many episodes are automatically gone. Keep him in, the Pooloo making the documentary rages because a corporation such as Fox won't listen to him and his petty "rivalry" against a cartoon character.

i swear there's some mental condition when some people watch the simpsons where they are more than happy to laugh at jokes at the expense of others but get pants-shitting-mad when it's turned on them.

In the UK, there was Goodness Gracious Me, which had a similar concept. Basically a sketch show written and starring South Asian comedians, featuring recurring characters based around South Asian stereotypes and culture, and the culture clash between Britain and Asia. Made fun of South Asians, made fun of Brits, but it was pretty funny and well observed, so no one was really offended.

It's not just The Simpsons. I've seen the same phenomenon among South Park fans and Asterix fans, and generally any series that gets a lot of mileage from making fun of different groups.

The most prominent example has to be Isaac Hayes, who was fine with South Park episodes making fun of Jews, Muslims, Mormons, Christians and atheists, but the Scientology episode was intolerable bigotry. Granted, he only said that before the repeat of the episode (i.e. after the Church saw it), but still.
