One of the most brilliantly fucked up, surreal, and nihilistic kids cartoons ever created. Fitting that it was created by a very fucked up individual as well. But hey, who knows what talent(s) lurk behind depraved minds? Charles Manson could write a good song.

This is a show that would never fucking happen again. Not at least a show like this being heavily marketed to children. And we ate it up. We sang the Happy Happy Joy Joy Song. We sang the Canadian Kilted Yaksman song.

Stupid me at the time, I must have been 8 tops, didn't notice the word 'hell' was scratched out. The show went far beyond adult jokes unlike the 4th Nicktoon Rocko's Modern Life but often went full bore in the -as mentioned- nihilistic perspective that dominated the 90's. There's a reason why the show was simultaneously broadcast on MTV.

Also this episode is one of the most accurate pieces of media on Basic Training since Full Metal Jacket. Especially the scene in the gas chamber.

PS: kids today are massive fucking pussies getting triggered over little shit. Back in my day (where I had to walk 15 miles to get anywhere) we had to put up with shit like this nigga'.

THIS SHOW HAD MULTIPLE VIDEO GAMES NIGGA! NAME ME ONE OTHER CARTOON THAT HAD SHIT LIKE THIS THAT HAD A KICKASS GENESIS GAME!?

I saw it as an allegory for life; and Ren and Stimpy were co-workers of mine. It helped me understand them.

You could honest to god compare the show, especially the later Games Animation seasons, to Voltaire's Candide. They were both ironic takes on eternal optimism versus the crushing reality of real life. Not many episodes ended with Ren & Stimpy achieving happyness, often times they died or were happy in death, or the episode had kind of non-ending (which is way ahead of absurdist humor prevalent in Adult Swim cartoons these days).

Exactly. Or Aristophanes, "The Clouds". My fav R & S ep was "Stimpy's Happy Helmet" , tho' Kowlowski eps were great too. Log. log. log...

The clip doesn't have it, but at the very end of the song when they're throwing their hats in the air there's a fucking intestine shooting out poop.

That's like something you'd see out of a fucked up Adult Swim show, not a Nickelodeon kids show.

i wonder how much involvement john k actually had on Ren and Stimpy. is it like Clarence where when the creator was #metwo'd the show stayed mostly the same (although the last season was terrible) or did he basically run the shop when it came to writing and animation?

(fun fact my folks never let me watch Ren and Stimpy when i was small because it was to vulgar

There's more info over in the John K. thread, but the general consensus seems to be that he was involved but people overlook the importance of everyone else working under him at the time.

Same thing with my parents. I wasn't allowed to watch until I was like 13. It's just as well since I don't think R&S is really a kids' show.

Ha, neither did mine. Rocko's Modern Life was a-ok for some reason though. Would watch R&S at a friend's house sometimes however. Space Madness is still a classic.

Despite the fact that he was a dick, the Spumco years are indeed better than the Games years. I love how John K. hates scripts, when the best part about Ren and Stimpy was indeed the writing. Especially when Ren goes on one of his big breakdowns. Specifically the ones in Sven Hoek and Stimpy's Fan Club, the latter being my favorite episode of the show for being a meta humor parable about jealousy. If John would pass off his hubris for "muh Bob Clampett animation", he would realize the true strengths of his show.

Season 1 is great but it's a little rough around the edges. Season 2 is the absolute nadir of the show. Every episode had superb animation and was fucking amazing. It had quite a few bold experimental episode's like Stimpy's Fan Club like you mentioned.

John K. might deserve jail time but he also deserves some kind of award for Ren's monologue in Stimpy's Fan Club.

I was...nice today. Nice. To those insipid little monkeys...

Hey, kids at home, go look up what insipid means so you'll know what Ren thinks about you!

I didn't know what a sack of protoplasm was until I read Naked Lunch.

To this day, any episode that involves Ren completely losing it will make me laugh really hard. Thought it was the funniest shit when I was five years old, and I still find those moments to be just as hilarious.

Stimpy's Fan Club was the first Macbeth reference I ever saw, by the way. lol.

I don't know whether to love or hate Ren and Stimpy.
It has wonderful art and this amazing hateful tone which is so rare to come across but I think most of the grossout jokes blow dick.

Also some thrash metal band with unintelligible lyrics named themselves after Wilbur Cobb, a character from one of the best episodes:
