Lmfao are you fucking me right now? Are you legitimately that autistic? I don't mean to sling mud at you my dude, but compared to SMT1+2? Nocturne is a fucking masterpiece. Yes, I'm willing to go that far. I'm actually one of those autists who unironically loves Final Fantasy 1-3, so clunky JRPGs are not something that I'm afraid of. You know what I do fucking hate though? How poorly Magnetite is implemented in mainline SMT compared to the first two Devil Summoner games, the shit-tier availability of SMT1+2 outside of Japan and how that awful, godforsaken Aeon Genesis patch is the ONLY way you can play SMT2 in English, and I also hate how Magic is a useless stat for your male protagonist in the earlier SMT/Devil Summoner/Persona games.

The story of SMT1+2 is actually a lot better than Nocturne's and its inability to market itself without a guest character, I won't argue that. However, what good is a fantastic story when all the dungeons are so awful and samey? Final Fantasy and Zelda are able to get away with samey-looking dungeons because they're all top-down third person RPGs (at least as far as the NES/SNES is concerned). The lack of variety in the tilesets for SMT1+2 is absolutely horrendous for a first-person dungeon crawler and not helping matters any is how intricate the maps are.
The only things I'll give to Nocturne are its music and the way they handled the reason system (where their ideals were actually grey instead of the gay ass "demon bad, god beid, people gud" bullshit from past games)

But, I will take beating any Megaten game in the SNES in a heartbeat over playing something that was "meant" to be an "evolution" of the franchise. Also, every Megaten game that came in the same console as Nocturne overshadows it in almost every single way.
Sad thing is these kinds of people help forge the kind of awful takes like 'naoto is trans' in gullible spastics
Don't forget the retarded one "Kanji is gay".

It's way too funny how these people are trying so hard to ignore the fact that Kanji believed that liking cute things made you a faggot. Also, said faggots were predators and lame. So they try to push the idea that he is in the closet (despite explicitly showing that he is into Naoto, even after she admitted to the group that she was a woman).

SMT V was in the sizzle reel for the direct but I managed to see a few details that weren't previously shown by Atlus
Zeus from SJR is in the game. Uses some sort of phys skill against Demeter. I think at this point I'm betting that most if not all Doi designed demons that have been previously in an SMT game are in. Hopefully this means a fusable Dagda is in too.

Boss fight with Green Egyptian God dude we don't have a confirmed name for yet. Might be kinda late-mid game or early-late game considering the use of Throne, Horus, and one of the four kings that I don't fuckin' remember the name of.

Dungeon with some sort of gimmick with these red pad things that fling you the direction they're facing. Nahobino gets flung to the left when he walked in front of it.

Without Nocturne, Digital Devil Saga and the Raidou Kuzunoha games wouldn't exist at all. Nocturne is an imperfect game and I'll gladly criticise it whenever necessary. With that in mind, Nocturne was a critical stepping stone in getting the franchise into the modern era. Digital Devil Saga is literally built off of the Nocturne engine, so what does that tell you about the importance of that game?

As far as your argument about SMT 1+2 is concerned, I still staunchly that you're better off playing either Devil Summoner, Soul Hackers, or Strange Journey over anything on the SFC. If you're gonna hyperfixate on "classic" MegaTen games, why not channel that energy into promoting those games? Devil Summoner and Soul Hackers dramatically improved upon the Magnetite issues and samey tilesets of SMT1+2. Hell, Strange Journey is the closest you'll ever get to recapturing that "classic" Megami Tensei experience that so many other games these days don't have.

It's incredible how poorly Doi demons where he is allowed to indulge in his sentai fetish tend to fit in with the rest of the roster.

Shin Megami Tensei 2 is one of the best games in the series and and probably the most imaginative, it would be criminal to not recommend it to someone.

Unless the GBA version of SMT2 gets ported to Virtual Console any time soon (or at least gets a fan translation), I firmly stand against recommending SMT2 to anyone. I love the storytelling and the characters, but the SNES version (especially with that infernal Aeon Genesis patch) is not the way to go.

It's perfectly playable even on SNES, especially with emulator features like save states, and there's long been a patch that fixes up a lot of Aeon Genesis' jankiness and outdated names.

I'm screaming. Casey Moniglo and Daman Mills?! Fucking hard pass.

I will dread if they appear in Persona 6.

Dub trailer just released and
>Nahobinos VA is the same twitter nonbinary that voiced Shinji in the Netflix Eva dub
Rest of the cast are whos or from stuff like 3 houses, but man, if he does the uwu soft boi voice shit with Nahobino i think im just turning subs on and not looking back.
Another reason why subs are superior than dubs :story:
which is funny since in Nahobino Japanese VA sound pretty deep.

I finished reading the persona 4 manga some time ago and it is a great teenagecore work. I kinda wish I did experience it when I was a teenager.

Late reply but just wanted to clarify. I never mentioned that the classic SMT games on the snes were the ONLY games I would play besides Nocturne (I would even play the Nakajima games instead).

To an extent I agree with the claim that without Nocturne the rest of the games on the ps2 would not exist. Maybe DDS but for Raidou I would argue that games like DMC and other spin offs like Majin Tensei and the Devil Summoner were more influential to Raidou's development.

What always irks me about dubs is that they often change the script in cringeworthy ways it's not even funny. The only series of games that sort of did this right were Yakuza 7 and Judgement were they had the option to choose a localized script and the "original" script.

There's a project in progress where people are transplanting the Aeon Genesis translation to the gba port. Personally, I would rather hope for a patch for the PlayStation versions, they have better music in my opinion. Also, is the Genesis patch for SMT II bad? I don't remember having any issues with it.

What's a good game to start from in the megami tensei series? I enjoyed strange journey and devil survivor on the ds (played them on an NDS cart in 3ds).

Got all the games on my win max, got the encrypted 3ds versions of strange journey and the devil survivors on citra. Trying to force my way through the first version translated on SNES but it's so boring and I don't know where to go after I get the coffee or some shit. I know the 2nd follows on from the first so I can't really play that until I complete the first game. I know the stories are seperate from one another so what would be a good entry to start from? (I'm autistic, I try to play game series in the order they were released)

The 3DS version of SJ adds major QoL changes at the cost of worse art and a OC donut steel waifu that changes the OG games plot but you can still mostly ignore the new stuff and play like if it was the DS version.
The 3DS version of DeSu also adds QoL like making phys builds viable as well as extra chapters for 3 of the original endings, they aren't as bad as the waifu from SJR but i personally think they are kind of lackluster compared to the original plot, it also adds VA but you can always mute it if you don't like it.
About the other games, you could wait for V to release in a month, but Nocturne and IV (the original, apocalypse is a parallel universe/sequel) are the best starting points overall, if you could download SJR and DeSu in citra i believe you can also do the same with IV, with Nocturne to, you can choose to either play the original or the remaster, which adds the option to choose what skills demons inherit in fusion, and VA, but i also heard it has small performances issues in consoles and it is locked to 30 FPS even on PC, and it makes some cringy changes to the script like mentioned above in the thread. I honestly think the original is fine but if you don't want to reroll demon skills over and over then you can always get the remaster (or mod the skills yourself with cheats i guess)
Although 2 takes place after 1, the game is self contained, and you would only miss some context over some references to the 1st game.

Thanks! got nocturne and iv. Got the radoiu games and I think digital summoner 1 and 2 on pcxs2. Got all the persona games too, don't really know where to start. I'm stuck in a mindset where I want to play the older games first since the mechanics will naturally improve as games progress.
