I also did a Rags-to-Riches challenge about a year ago in The Sims 1, albeit somewhat differently than you might expect. I did it without any jobs.
Those of you who watched Ambiguous Amphibian's video on the subject might be somewhat confused as to how it was done, since he required numerous deaths and several replacement Sims just to get the ball rolling, but I did it without any deaths at all.
Please note that this was achieved via The Complete Collection edition of the game, so it came with all the expansions, plus some content that was only available via online. Here's my route:
So to give you a deep dive into the mechanics of The Sims 1, an item has a list of properties, some viewable to the player, but many more are hidden from view. Let's use the "Llamark Refridgerator" as an example and show you the values of the item:
And people say this game's hard to make money in. Meanwhile, I became a millionaire in the span of two weeks using just one simple trick.

- Wait until the Mysterious Man comes to deliver the package. Open it. Sell the Electronic Spell book, buy the Haybale End Table, then move the Spellbound Wand Charger to it, and sell the End Table it came on for some extra cash. Then, take the Wand from the Package, but leave everything else there inside it. This will become important in just a moment.
- Use the funds you acquired to buy as many Steeling Beauty Loveseats as you can. This is the most important step! You ought to be able to afford two of them at the moment, as they cost $139 each. They look like this:
- Once you have your wand, use the hole to travel to Magic Town. Find the Mysterious Man, and sell him your wand for $50. Leave immediately. Once home, use the Wand Charger to give yourself another wand. Return to Magic Town and repeat the process. This is how you will earn money in the early game. If you need food, cookies may be purchased from the Buy Menu for $10.
- Once Midnight has been reached, sell the box your magical supplies came in, as it is now worth $100. Then sell your Steeling Beauty Loveseats, and immediately purchase four more...
So to give you a deep dive into the mechanics of The Sims 1, an item has a list of properties, some viewable to the player, but many more are hidden from view. Let's use the "Llamark Refridgerator" as an example and show you the values of the item:
- Purchase Price (PP). This is how much the item is worth to purchase. In the case of our fridge, this is $600.
- Initial Deprecation (ID). This is how much the item's value will decrease by after it has been on your lot for at least one day. The ID of the fridge is 120, so after one day, the fridge will be worth $480 if you were to sell it.
- Daily Deprecation (DD). This is how much the item's value will decrease every day after the first. This is 6, for the fridge, so it will be worth $474 on the third day, $468 on the fourth, and so on.
- Deprecation Limit (DL). This is the lowest possible value an item can be worth. This fridge's DL is $180, so once its price has degraded to that point, it will remain at that selling price for the rest of the game.
- PP: 139. This the price of the item, so that's to be expected.
- ID: 217. Weird, since this would effectively mean the value would be negative, or at least $1 assuming that's the minimum value.
- DD: 14. This appears to be normal.
- DL: 578. Ah, there it is. The game must be running some kind of "Less than" check to set the price of the bench to this value. Since 139 - 217 = -78, which is obviously less than 578, this becomes the price after it's been on your lot for a single day.
And people say this game's hard to make money in. Meanwhile, I became a millionaire in the span of two weeks using just one simple trick.
