I honestly only know about American politics from what I read on the Internet but since we all love shitting on leftists I figured we'd get a kick out of this. Also it's trending on Twitter so you know it's important.

NEW YORK — Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a 28-year-old political novice running on a low budget and an unabashedly liberal platform, upset longtime U.S. Rep. Joseph Crowley on Tuesday in the Democratic congressional primary in New York.

The surprise victory by the community organizer in a district that includes parts of the Bronx and Queens came after an energetic, grassroots campaign that mustered more than enough support in a low-turnout race that many had expected to be an easy win for Crowley, a member of the Democratic House leadership.

“The community is ready for a movement of economic and social justice. That is what we tried to deliver,” said Ocasio-Cortez, who has never held elected office and whose candidacy attracted only modest media attention.

She told The Associated Press after her victory that she didn’t have enough money to do polling in the race, but felt in her gut that her message had a chance to connect.

“I live in this community. I organized in this community. I felt the absence of the incumbent. I knew he didn’t have a strong presence,” she said.

Crowley has been in Congress since 1999 and hadn’t faced an opponent in a primary election since 2004, when Ocasio-Cortez was just a teenager. He was considered a candidate to become the next House speaker if Democrats win the majority.

“It’s not about me,” Crowley, 56, told his supporters at a campaign party following his loss. “It’s about America. I want nothing but the best for Ms. Ocasio-Cortez. I want her to be victorious.”

He later played guitar with a band at the election night gathering, and dedicated the first song, Bruce Springsteen’s “Born to Run,” to Ocasio-Cortez.

Crowley represents New York’s 14th Congressional District, where he is also the leader of the Queens Democratic party.

Ocasio-Cortez was outspent by an 18-1 margin during her race but won the endorsement of some influential groups on the party’s far left, including MoveOn, as well as the actress Cynthia Nixon, who is running for governor. She defeated Crowley by 15 percentage points.

Born in the Bronx to a mother from Puerto Rico and a father who died in 2008, Ocasio-Cortez said she decided to challenge Crowley to push a more progressive stance on economic and other issues.

She attended Boston University, where she earned degrees in economics and international relations, and also spent time working in the office of the late U.S. Sen. Edward Kennedy.

After graduating, she returned to the Bronx where she became a community organizer. In the 2016 presidential campaign she worked for U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders.

Among her issues is expanding the Medicare program to people of all ages and abolishing Immigrations and Customs Enforcement. She recently went to Tornillo, Texas, to protest against policies that have separated parents from their children at the southern U.S. border.

Ocasio-Cortez gained some internet attention for a campaign video called “The Courage to Change,” a two-minute spot for which she wrote the script and featured footage from her own home.

Crowley is chair of the House Democratic Caucus, the fourth-highest ranking position in Democratic leadership in that chamber of Congress.

His loss drew the attention of President Donald Trump.

“Wow! Big Trump Hater Congressman Joe Crowley, who many expected was going to take Nancy Pelosi’s place, just LOST his primary election. In other words, he’s out! That is a big one that nobody saw happening. Perhaps he should have been nicer, and more respectful, to his President!” he tweeted.

The Republican candidate for the office, Anthony Pappas, is running unopposed and had no primary. Pappas teaches economics at St. John’s University.

She was a Bernie campaigner, is supported by BLM, and wants to abolish Immigrations and Customs Enforcement. Also this was in a solid-blue Congressional District so you know she's a shoo-in for next Congress.

But hey, we did get to see Trump laugh at Crowley on Twitter.

Sure, let’s just make hormones accessible to anyone.

As someone on birth control pills, that shit is serious. On top of literally interfering with with the brain, it has serious consequences if your cholesterol or blood sugar is high.

Basically, it increases your risk of having blood clots exponentially. And if your cholesterol, sugar, and/or blood pressure’s already high, it’s gonna fuck you up pretty fast.

So sure, let’s make it available over the counter in the US. If AOC’s secret master plan is to get rid of all the diabetics, fatties, or women with health issues, well played.

And yes, there are new, 3rd generation pills made specifically for people with high cholesterol, but your fucking doctor has to make that call. Not you. Not to mention there aren’t available as widely. Often, pharmacies have to order them in.

I cannot emphasise how much consultations with a doctor are important for that shit, and I cannot understand why AOC promotes this.

But then again, she also supports Mermaids, that trans charity that feeds hormones to kids in the UK, so I guess she really doesn’t care.

Killing illegals, white trash and hoodrats isnt the worst idea. normal people will just go to the doctor.

Its hard to build gulags as long as you are not in power, so pills have to do it for now.

Because it's a social media #woke craze, and that's all she knows or cares about.

Why is it even a craze? Not a rhetorical question, genuinely wondering.

Birth control pills aren’t condoms. They do have repercussions and lasting effects on one’s health.

And you can’t just randomly stop them either.

It's basically a good way to combine the gibsmedats baiting and framing the Republicans as waging a War on Women for not enthusiastically agreeing to the gibsmedats.

It goes like this. Radical feminists started up the idea that the extra stuff they need for being women should be free (pads, razors, even makeup in some cases). Because biology is misogynistic, apparently. The DNC took a look at that and selected the one they could spin the best, birth control pills, to make a high-level issue. They found some high-profile whiner to come before congress and whine about how much birth control was costing her while she was attending college (she was like forty-something, career student essentially), to virtue signal about how hard it is to be a woman and how that was clearly all the Republicans' fault. Essentially it was a side angle to the DNC's pro-abortion push because that way they could claim it really was a full-on misogynist movement by the Republicans rather than just being about abortion. "See?! They don't want to pay for birth control either, that clearly means they all violently hate women! Especially the female Republicans!"

They largely dropped it when it wasn't very effective... the Republican tendency to just ignore the DNC ranting and raving at them actually sort of worked in that case because the whole War on Women thing just wasn't very sustainable, it was a bit too strawmannish even for them (at the time). All the Republicans had to do was keep focusing on the abortion issue and that kept their core base and a lot of the moderates focused on that too, so the "free birth control pills are a human right" dropped out of fashion with the actual politicians. But the gibs-loving social media feminists still like to yank it out and wave it around every so often, and since that's all AOC really is it's not too surprising to see her doing it.

Even in drawn images that are meant to create a strong empowering sensation make her look like a fucking psychopath.

That's a Beware The Superman expression.

Condoms are over the counter and super cheap. A few bucks goes a long way.

There is exactly one valid angle to the "free birth control pill" argument, but they refuse to use it.

That angle is that it is well known that African-American men tend to refuse to wear condoms, because bareback feels better.

However, women of other ethnicities don't have to deal with that problem very much. Thus, what has effectively happened is that a pressing African-American issue has been co-opted in the name of hedonism.

Feminists believe the government should subsidize everything related to their vaginas. It’s easy political pandering to advocate giving stronk whammens more free shit.
I'm not certain if AOC even has one of those.

In any case I'm pretty sure that women taking birth control and then pissing out the hormones are what keeps turning the frogs gay. So basically if you do the math AOC is trying to turn the frogs gay and that is terrible. :jacepout:

In a perfect hypothetical, you and I might agree that stomping a million puppies to death is not a good thing and we would avoid doing it. But in the real world, it's easier to strike a deal with your woke media allies that they'll ignore your million stomped puppies because that republican over there (TROT?) just stomped a puppy and that puppy's name was Ginger and Ginger was going to be the first of his litter to go to college and become a radiological technician and his death-by-stomping is one of 16 signs that Trump's America is a terrible place (Ginger's story may or may not be the number 11 that will shock you).

Because we the good people already know that our outgroup needs to be destroyed, our gods put the revelation in our hearts. We trust the gut feeling he puts in the pits of our stomachs, we don't need to wait for boring evidence to make it explainable to others, if they were on our side they wouldn't need to know why in the first place. Now we just need a favorable media light to close the deal and that trot's puppy-stomping is perfect for both of us: we thought leaders and rich people get a distraction from our own stomped puppies because our friends in the media ignore our skeletons, and our friends in the media get to monopolize their market because we'll help to delegitimize their competition.

I mean, everyone knows that stomping puppies is good for your skin and provides vitamin B12 which we all need. It's just the trots that took it too far and ruined it, right? But it's still okay when we do it because we've got good intentions. Right?

Look, I’m not a fan of AOC, but would more affordable birth control really be such a bad thing?
Sure, but I do not see how that is the government's job.
It's the government's job to quit fucking around with the insurance racket and get medical companies to quit gouging for all it's worth, which would lower the cost on all medication and health services. Of course suggesting that makes me a misogynazi, though.

Yeah, I'm sorry, but you proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that you have no fucking idea what you're talking about. You can plug your ears and make all the "La! La! La!" noises you want, but he explained thoroughly and repeatedly that there's no such thing as a "domestic terrorism" statute, and not only did you blatantly refuse to accept that, but now you're trying to paint yourself as the intellectual.

Christ, I didn't think it was possible for the House to get even stupider, but you're sure trying your damnedest to dumb it down a few notches. By the time the next election rolls around it's going to have to be mandatory that every member of the House is given a bib and fuckin' crayons.

That's not even an argument. You could say that of pretty much any commodity;
"Would more affordable fresh food really be such a bad thing?"
"Would more affordable public transit really be such a bad thing?"
"Would more affordable toiletries..." Etcetera

Would it be "such a bad thing"; perhaps not, but does it need to be? That wasn't an argument, it was a deflection.

I think @ProgKing of the North gets too much shit for what he says and I think that's honestly because he's a straight leftist and that's not too popular in A&H, but it is a good point that "wouldn't it be nice" is a bad argument by itself. Like, if I had infinite money I'd feed every starving child in Africa because of course that "would be nice". But then a more holistic analysis is that I'd be a one-man white man's burden creating a dependent class of black people who couldn't help themselves without my saintly largesse. Today's "they just need to eat some of your food" becomes tomorrow's "you're holding them hostage to your food supplies".
