I honestly only know about American politics from what I read on the Internet but since we all love shitting on leftists I figured we'd get a kick out of this. Also it's trending on Twitter so you know it's important.

NEW YORK — Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a 28-year-old political novice running on a low budget and an unabashedly liberal platform, upset longtime U.S. Rep. Joseph Crowley on Tuesday in the Democratic congressional primary in New York.

The surprise victory by the community organizer in a district that includes parts of the Bronx and Queens came after an energetic, grassroots campaign that mustered more than enough support in a low-turnout race that many had expected to be an easy win for Crowley, a member of the Democratic House leadership.

“The community is ready for a movement of economic and social justice. That is what we tried to deliver,” said Ocasio-Cortez, who has never held elected office and whose candidacy attracted only modest media attention.

She told The Associated Press after her victory that she didn’t have enough money to do polling in the race, but felt in her gut that her message had a chance to connect.

“I live in this community. I organized in this community. I felt the absence of the incumbent. I knew he didn’t have a strong presence,” she said.

Crowley has been in Congress since 1999 and hadn’t faced an opponent in a primary election since 2004, when Ocasio-Cortez was just a teenager. He was considered a candidate to become the next House speaker if Democrats win the majority.

“It’s not about me,” Crowley, 56, told his supporters at a campaign party following his loss. “It’s about America. I want nothing but the best for Ms. Ocasio-Cortez. I want her to be victorious.”

He later played guitar with a band at the election night gathering, and dedicated the first song, Bruce Springsteen’s “Born to Run,” to Ocasio-Cortez.

Crowley represents New York’s 14th Congressional District, where he is also the leader of the Queens Democratic party.

Ocasio-Cortez was outspent by an 18-1 margin during her race but won the endorsement of some influential groups on the party’s far left, including MoveOn, as well as the actress Cynthia Nixon, who is running for governor. She defeated Crowley by 15 percentage points.

Born in the Bronx to a mother from Puerto Rico and a father who died in 2008, Ocasio-Cortez said she decided to challenge Crowley to push a more progressive stance on economic and other issues.

She attended Boston University, where she earned degrees in economics and international relations, and also spent time working in the office of the late U.S. Sen. Edward Kennedy.

After graduating, she returned to the Bronx where she became a community organizer. In the 2016 presidential campaign she worked for U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders.

Among her issues is expanding the Medicare program to people of all ages and abolishing Immigrations and Customs Enforcement. She recently went to Tornillo, Texas, to protest against policies that have separated parents from their children at the southern U.S. border.

Ocasio-Cortez gained some internet attention for a campaign video called “The Courage to Change,” a two-minute spot for which she wrote the script and featured footage from her own home.

Crowley is chair of the House Democratic Caucus, the fourth-highest ranking position in Democratic leadership in that chamber of Congress.

His loss drew the attention of President Donald Trump.

“Wow! Big Trump Hater Congressman Joe Crowley, who many expected was going to take Nancy Pelosi’s place, just LOST his primary election. In other words, he’s out! That is a big one that nobody saw happening. Perhaps he should have been nicer, and more respectful, to his President!” he tweeted.

The Republican candidate for the office, Anthony Pappas, is running unopposed and had no primary. Pappas teaches economics at St. John’s University.

She was a Bernie campaigner, is supported by BLM, and wants to abolish Immigrations and Customs Enforcement. Also this was in a solid-blue Congressional District so you know she's a shoo-in for next Congress.

But hey, we did get to see Trump laugh at Crowley on Twitter.

Blacks treat condoms like they’re made of kryptonite. Nigga gotta get his nut and condoms get in the way of that.

To be completely clear, it is primarily African-American men who are disproportionately like this.

African-American women generally want them to use condoms, they are often brow-beaten into letting the men not use them out of fear of being left for a woman who will.

Yes? That's what abstinence is. If you do not want to have children, at the minimum use a condom. If you want a guarantee to never have children, never have sex.

Never have sex? Well, that's simply not going to happen, for reasons too numerous to list. You might as well tell people to stop eating food.

I've just been under the impression that pro-lifers are all self-righteous religious nuts who think everyone should believe in Jesus or some dumbass bullshit like that. Not shitting on religion, just the indignant attitude that comes with some of the crazier members of the God Fan Club. The ones who believe sex is only for procreation and birth control spits in the face of GodJesus himself.

The majority of pro life people are absolutely fine with birth control and condoms, it's just that personal responsibility is a phrase never used by Democrats. Oh, and sex is pushed as an innocent thing that has zero consequences, so have as much of it as you want no matter how old you are, even if you're 10!

And yes of course, personal responsibility hasn't been a thing with the Left as a whole as far as I can remember. I kinda understood this fact since I was like, 14.

It's all good though, most of us will all be dead from a horrible mixture of incurable STDs within a few years.

And the incels shall inherit the earth.

On the up side, lack of condoms increases your chances of getting child support and EBT down the road.

Thats what the lamestream media feeds you. In reality there are plenty of pro-lifers and pro life arguments not centered around religion. The only time I bring up religion when advocating pro-life is when people try and say that the bible supports abortion first. Other than that I mainly stick to the many inconsistencies of advocating abortion up to birth and how under any rationale you are essentially saying its okay to kill infants depending on location, as well as pointing out that arguments like my body my choice dont work when talking about what is absolutely a separate body, as well as responsibility for actions that the two parties involved chose to take part in that, outside of rape, involve consequences they knew would happen.

I don't believe in Jebus, but I'm still not comfortable with killing babies because they're "just a clump of cells" because I can't see how I'm not just a clump of cells.

If I believed in souls I guess I could just tell myself you get those in the third trimester so it's OK

It's honestly hard to take pro-life arguments seriously when it seems that they're all obnoxious Jesus nuts. There's a place that does abortions not far from me that has them constantly protesting and being annoying but eh I pay no attention to them. I don't think abortion should be illegal, per se, that's just nuts, but at the least it shouldn't be actively encouraged. I'm well aware of the scientific arguments but they never get the same light as the religious ones.

Remember, you kill babies every time you have breakfast.

What I find absolutely hilarious is that the same "pro-life" people who are opposed to abortion, are also vehemently opposed to birth control medications and even condoms.

I mean seriously, what do you want people to do? Stop having sex?

How am I opposed to condoms or birth control pills?
What on Earth gave you that idea?

All I said was that birth control pills shouldn’t be available over the counter due to how they wreck your hormones and blood tests.

Birth control pills are shown to double the rate of strokes in women of child bearing age. Not to mention, they can cause migraines and chest pain pretty frequently if your cholesterol is high or if you smoke.

Or do you expect pharmacists to regulate that too and open themselves up to lawsuits after a chain smoking landwhale that didn’t fully understand the consequences of what she was taking ends up in the hospital?

If anything, make condoms available for free. Not the pill.

LOL, people don't use condoms because it doesn't feel good, or something. Good luck getting them to do otherwise.

I feel that people should be free to make their own shit choices in life and suffer the consequences. It's not like the information they need to know about the risks isn't out there, not to mention every birth control commercial I've seen always mentions these side effects. Doesn't stop anyone from buying them, any more than the effects of smoking and excessive fast food and alcohol consumption prevent booze, tobacco, and McDonald's from being sold on a regular basis.

If you're a legal adult you should be able to put whatever you want in your body, good or not. I am not advocating free taxpayer funded birth control or anything but it's a sight better than abortion IMO.

Free condoms are available at many places anyway, but again, it's not like they're popular to begin with. Otherwise abortion wouldn't be the big issue it is in the first place.

Damn 80s fundie strawmen.

Seriously though, who opposes birth control?
I would bet that only boomer Catholics in the sticks would be vehemently opposed to birth control of any kind, and in my experience religious people could be convinced of the benefits of birth control.

It's dumb shit like this that's pushing me inexorably towards being anti-abortion instead of just "I'm not comfortable with it."

Ignoring the fact that most eggs you can buy in the store are highly unlikely to be fertilized, the takeaway is that you equate killing a chicken with killing a human.

Anyone who thinks that way is not the company I care to associate myself with.

We legit kill chickens to eat anyway, so the comparison only works for non vegan vegetarians.

It is ok to kill an animal for human benefit. It is not ok to kill a human.

Duh, tax the rich! Everyone knows the rich have infinite money, and we can totally start taking as much of that money from them as we want if we just finally start taxing them like has never ever been done before! You can pay for absolutely anything if you just tax the rich! This will definitely not raise taxes for anyone who does not own 100 solid gold supercars!
And taxing the wealthy at what are essentially punitive levels of excess surely won't incentivize them to hide and launder their money in other states/countries that don't fuck them over so much, or just take their businesses out of your region entirely because it's just not worth it to them to put up with your highway robbery in exchange for stepping over drug needles every morning on the way to work.

To be fair, I don't take the abortion debate seriously at all. Both sides are exceptional in different ways, and it's fun to watch them sperg out.

That is some hilariously shitty ad placement though, I tell ya.

Damn 80s fundie strawmen.

Seriously though, who opposes birth control?

People who think that anyone who has sex for any reason other than for procreation is going to Hell for it. That being said, abstinence IS the best form of birth control, but really, it just isn't practical to expect people to abide by it.

I have family that literally believe that "the rich have more money so we should tax them more" and all that nonsense. NYC might very well be unable to sustain itself if the rich who live there decide to jump ship to elsewhere.

And then what...

I don't like those people either, but I am willing to believe the idea that the media really plays them up as the single dominant pro-life argument when really a lot of pro-lifers are not so for religious reasons. They want a strawman to beat up and having exposed myself to more conservative people in the past few years I've been learning that there are a lot of conservative positions they just don't want to talk about because it's difficult ip dismiss them all as stupid or unreasoned. The people who paint all pro-lifers as ignorant creationist hicks are doing a left-wing version of saying "all muslins are terrorists".

For example, most conservatives know that dying your hair an unnatural color makes you look like a circus freak
