I honestly only know about American politics from what I read on the Internet but since we all love shitting on leftists I figured we'd get a kick out of this. Also it's trending on Twitter so you know it's important.

NEW YORK — Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a 28-year-old political novice running on a low budget and an unabashedly liberal platform, upset longtime U.S. Rep. Joseph Crowley on Tuesday in the Democratic congressional primary in New York.

The surprise victory by the community organizer in a district that includes parts of the Bronx and Queens came after an energetic, grassroots campaign that mustered more than enough support in a low-turnout race that many had expected to be an easy win for Crowley, a member of the Democratic House leadership.

“The community is ready for a movement of economic and social justice. That is what we tried to deliver,” said Ocasio-Cortez, who has never held elected office and whose candidacy attracted only modest media attention.

She told The Associated Press after her victory that she didn’t have enough money to do polling in the race, but felt in her gut that her message had a chance to connect.

“I live in this community. I organized in this community. I felt the absence of the incumbent. I knew he didn’t have a strong presence,” she said.

Crowley has been in Congress since 1999 and hadn’t faced an opponent in a primary election since 2004, when Ocasio-Cortez was just a teenager. He was considered a candidate to become the next House speaker if Democrats win the majority.

“It’s not about me,” Crowley, 56, told his supporters at a campaign party following his loss. “It’s about America. I want nothing but the best for Ms. Ocasio-Cortez. I want her to be victorious.”

He later played guitar with a band at the election night gathering, and dedicated the first song, Bruce Springsteen’s “Born to Run,” to Ocasio-Cortez.

Crowley represents New York’s 14th Congressional District, where he is also the leader of the Queens Democratic party.

Ocasio-Cortez was outspent by an 18-1 margin during her race but won the endorsement of some influential groups on the party’s far left, including MoveOn, as well as the actress Cynthia Nixon, who is running for governor. She defeated Crowley by 15 percentage points.

Born in the Bronx to a mother from Puerto Rico and a father who died in 2008, Ocasio-Cortez said she decided to challenge Crowley to push a more progressive stance on economic and other issues.

She attended Boston University, where she earned degrees in economics and international relations, and also spent time working in the office of the late U.S. Sen. Edward Kennedy.

After graduating, she returned to the Bronx where she became a community organizer. In the 2016 presidential campaign she worked for U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders.

Among her issues is expanding the Medicare program to people of all ages and abolishing Immigrations and Customs Enforcement. She recently went to Tornillo, Texas, to protest against policies that have separated parents from their children at the southern U.S. border.

Ocasio-Cortez gained some internet attention for a campaign video called “The Courage to Change,” a two-minute spot for which she wrote the script and featured footage from her own home.

Crowley is chair of the House Democratic Caucus, the fourth-highest ranking position in Democratic leadership in that chamber of Congress.

His loss drew the attention of President Donald Trump.

“Wow! Big Trump Hater Congressman Joe Crowley, who many expected was going to take Nancy Pelosi’s place, just LOST his primary election. In other words, he’s out! That is a big one that nobody saw happening. Perhaps he should have been nicer, and more respectful, to his President!” he tweeted.

The Republican candidate for the office, Anthony Pappas, is running unopposed and had no primary. Pappas teaches economics at St. John’s University.

She was a Bernie campaigner, is supported by BLM, and wants to abolish Immigrations and Customs Enforcement. Also this was in a solid-blue Congressional District so you know she's a shoo-in for next Congress.

But hey, we did get to see Trump laugh at Crowley on Twitter.

>Since the invasion of Iraq in 2003, the United States has entangled itself in war and occupation throughout the Middle East and North Africa. As of 2018, we are currently involved in military action in Libya, Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan, Yemen, Pakistan, and Somalia. According to the Constitution, the right to declare war belongs to the Legislative body, not the President. Yet, most of these acts of aggression have never once been voted on by Congress. Alex believes that we must end the forever war by bringing our troops home and ending the air strikes and bombings that perpetuate the cycle of terrorism and occupation throughout the world.

Ocasio-Cortez embraced the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee’s tactic of running conservative candidates in so-called “swing” districts, including dozens of candidates drawn from the military and intelligence agencies. But she advocates selecting more liberal candidates, like herself, in “safe” districts like the Fourteenth

The widely circulated campaign video narrated by the candidate falsely presents her as a typical young woman of the working class for whom “going into politics wasn’t in the plan.” Actually, Ocasio-Cortez was groomed for a career in Democratic Party politics. As soon as she graduated from Boston University, she was recruited to work in the office of Massachusetts Senator Edward Kennedy. Then, after a few years running a business start-up in the Bronx, she became a full-time organizer for the Sanders presidential campaign, laying the groundwork for her successful run for a congressional seat.

Ocasio-Cortez is a bourgeois politician, not a socialist. She does not question the economic foundations of capitalist society—the ownership of the banks and giant corporations by a financial aristocracy. She does not suggest that the property system in America or the accumulation of unheard-of wealth by a tiny fraction of the population should be questioned, let alone ended.

There’s not a hint in her politics of industrial democracy or workers’ rights in the workplace. There is not even Sanders’ verbal condemnation—as phony as it is—of the billionaires, many of whom, in New York City, are Democrats. At best, hers is a mildly reformist program that would have been entirely unexceptional in the Democratic Party of 1965.

And even these piddling reforms are predicated on an absurdity: the reform of the Democratic Party, one of the two political instruments through which the financial oligarchy rules America—a party that has moved drastically to the right over the past half-century.

This is the essential perspective of the Democratic Socialists of America. The Democrat Cops of America seeks to build a somewhat broader base for the Democratic Party, the historical graveyard of all movements from below that have sought to challenge American imperialism. It seeks to put a progressive face on this right-wing party in order to block any independent challenge by the working class to the entire framework of corporate power.

The "Social Justice-Democrats" crowd alienated the likes of Secular-Talk and TYT. They may very well kill the party.

There was barely any voter turnout in her district this year, and she's actively, openly anti-ICE. I sincerely, genuinely hope that they keep pushing more and more of these young, know-nothing Communists and Socialists right to the top of the stack. It's perfect.

It'd be nice if they were planning to fight for working people. They're just gonna ferment a race war.

Bernie, despite his shitty views, at least had some ability to connect with white working voters. His intersexual ICE abolishing disciples are going to really ruin the Dems' ability to make any headway into appealing to white working voters. On one hand its pretty amusing, on the other I'm always nervous about one party rule.

I'm mostly astounded by the turnout because allegedly the Democratic bases are supposed to be the most energized that they've ever been, judging by how routinely we keep hearing about the Blue Wave, but then even in deeply Democrat-oriented districts we're routinely seeing abnormally-low numbers in quite a few of the primaries, now. Granted, the turnout for primaries is very different from the turnout you see in the actual elections, but I'm still fascinated by just how low some of these are.
I highly doubt we'll see a huge turnout in general for the Dems. They just assume everyone else is going to be there. Honestly of all the voters, Dems have been pretty lazy about voting. My brother is a die hard dem who never votes. Every election I mention who I voted for when we have political discussions. Consistently he has stated "I didn't vote" which seems to be a common response to most dems I have talked with.

It's hilarious to watch them bitch about elections yet do not go out and vote.

The problem is they think it will be a wave, it's more likely the blue falls will happen at this rate

As i said in another thread, they will be replaced like the the Federalists and the Whigs were

I give it a week until her ex’s “revenge porn” hits the internet. She has the aura of “freak” about her.
Better than the nudes of la Goblina that people mentioned on other sites I frequent. I luckily have not seen that yet but I imagine it's gross.

I have to wonder how many dumb fucking kids read this, and think "YEAH! longtime Republican lost to our glorious latina overlord! It's HER turn!" instead of knowing Rep. is Representative & not Republican. :story:

It seems a lot of people are saying they are dissatisfied with Democrats, but if this choice is any indication. It seems they are leaving the Democrats because they aren't extreme enough lol

Some of her stuff is just regular socialist talking point, but she is also for 100% unmitigated latin gibsmuh immigration of course, so I would not consider her a totally rational material for US leadership.

Also, she is a spic and thus not attractive. Look at how wide that nose is you mudsharks!

Yeah, that seems news-worthy. Let's run with that story. Seriously, what's with the "astro-turfing" around this woman? She isn't even elected, all she did was win a primary in some district in New York. Why the Hell is the media paying so much attention to this one specific person?

If I had to guess, this is who they're going to try to push as their "New Obama". I doubt it'll work though. Obama, was never really too specific on many issues, and the press never "pressed" him on anything, so appeared more palatable to the average voter. This woman has already come out on some things that I believe would not sit too well in a general election.

To try to avoid tinfoiling, I'd suggest that you're lost in the middle of the ocean with land nowhere in sight a sturdy floating log looks just about as great as a cruise liner.

The blue wave is coming, you'd have to be deliberately burying your head in the sand to not see it at this point. We'll just have to see how much of a wave it ends up being. And this lady too will be elected, no matter how out of step with mainstream politics she is, due to the political makeup of her district. Its more Democratic than Alabama is Republican, and they very nearly voted in a known child molester.

Thats all just part and parcel of the way America's districts are made up. Since cities are almost always overwhelmingly Democratic, their congressional districts are too, while Republican districts will almost always be 30 to 40 percent Democratic. Most of the country being under Republican gerrymanders only exacerbates that fact. And beyond that, since so many of those districts are gerrymandered, when things get bad enough for Republicans in that particular state their districts will all start becoming vulnerable at once, while Democrats would always have a core base of surviving urban seats that would vote for Satan if he had a D next to his name.
LOL and Democraps aren't gerrymandering whores? Apart from Crowley of course taking this goblina with a grain of salt, one of the main reasons she won was because redistricting in 2012 isolated the less gentrified or first wave (i.e. hipster) areas. To wit:
Bro she's talking about affordable rent and draining the swamp, not screeching tumblr shit. This is what democrats should have been campaigning on instead of alienating everyone but blue-haired coastal elites by sucking wall street cocks and letting Hillary Clinton choke the life out of them.
Of course she wants "affordable rent" (i.e. soup hotels for beaners) to retain a voter base, because rising rents from gentrification will inevitably stop her from becoming a career politician in the district. Maybe Crazy Bernie can pick her as his running mate when if he decides to run under the Socialist ticket, and cause the Democrat Party to split.

I do wonder what the establishment types like Pelosi and Schumer think about her in private. She toppled an establishment democrat, the guy was practically being groomed to take Pelosi's spot once Pelosi ran out of unicorn blood to drink. The spic falls under the radical alt-left wing that Waters is fanning, and they DESPISE Waters for it. She's also being praised by Sanders and make no mistake about it the establishment dislikes Bernie to a large degree as well, but they tolerate him to a degree because he's a veteran and has "tenure".

They use the immigrants for votes and that's it. They're likely not happy to see one of the garden help going beyond the lawn.
