I honestly only know about American politics from what I read on the Internet but since we all love shitting on leftists I figured we'd get a kick out of this. Also it's trending on Twitter so you know it's important.

NEW YORK — Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a 28-year-old political novice running on a low budget and an unabashedly liberal platform, upset longtime U.S. Rep. Joseph Crowley on Tuesday in the Democratic congressional primary in New York.

The surprise victory by the community organizer in a district that includes parts of the Bronx and Queens came after an energetic, grassroots campaign that mustered more than enough support in a low-turnout race that many had expected to be an easy win for Crowley, a member of the Democratic House leadership.

“The community is ready for a movement of economic and social justice. That is what we tried to deliver,” said Ocasio-Cortez, who has never held elected office and whose candidacy attracted only modest media attention.

She told The Associated Press after her victory that she didn’t have enough money to do polling in the race, but felt in her gut that her message had a chance to connect.

“I live in this community. I organized in this community. I felt the absence of the incumbent. I knew he didn’t have a strong presence,” she said.

Crowley has been in Congress since 1999 and hadn’t faced an opponent in a primary election since 2004, when Ocasio-Cortez was just a teenager. He was considered a candidate to become the next House speaker if Democrats win the majority.

“It’s not about me,” Crowley, 56, told his supporters at a campaign party following his loss. “It’s about America. I want nothing but the best for Ms. Ocasio-Cortez. I want her to be victorious.”

He later played guitar with a band at the election night gathering, and dedicated the first song, Bruce Springsteen’s “Born to Run,” to Ocasio-Cortez.

Crowley represents New York’s 14th Congressional District, where he is also the leader of the Queens Democratic party.

Ocasio-Cortez was outspent by an 18-1 margin during her race but won the endorsement of some influential groups on the party’s far left, including MoveOn, as well as the actress Cynthia Nixon, who is running for governor. She defeated Crowley by 15 percentage points.

Born in the Bronx to a mother from Puerto Rico and a father who died in 2008, Ocasio-Cortez said she decided to challenge Crowley to push a more progressive stance on economic and other issues.

She attended Boston University, where she earned degrees in economics and international relations, and also spent time working in the office of the late U.S. Sen. Edward Kennedy.

After graduating, she returned to the Bronx where she became a community organizer. In the 2016 presidential campaign she worked for U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders.

Among her issues is expanding the Medicare program to people of all ages and abolishing Immigrations and Customs Enforcement. She recently went to Tornillo, Texas, to protest against policies that have separated parents from their children at the southern U.S. border.

Ocasio-Cortez gained some internet attention for a campaign video called “The Courage to Change,” a two-minute spot for which she wrote the script and featured footage from her own home.

Crowley is chair of the House Democratic Caucus, the fourth-highest ranking position in Democratic leadership in that chamber of Congress.

His loss drew the attention of President Donald Trump.

“Wow! Big Trump Hater Congressman Joe Crowley, who many expected was going to take Nancy Pelosi’s place, just LOST his primary election. In other words, he’s out! That is a big one that nobody saw happening. Perhaps he should have been nicer, and more respectful, to his President!” he tweeted.

The Republican candidate for the office, Anthony Pappas, is running unopposed and had no primary. Pappas teaches economics at St. John’s University.

She was a Bernie campaigner, is supported by BLM, and wants to abolish Immigrations and Customs Enforcement. Also this was in a solid-blue Congressional District so you know she's a shoo-in for next Congress.

But hey, we did get to see Trump laugh at Crowley on Twitter.

The whole thing is really annoying as fuck, on one hand you have Cortez spouting stupid shit and acting extremely entitled, and on the other hand you have a collection of her critics, instead of criticizing what she's saying, they criticize what she wears, what she did in high school, and petty shit like that. The smart thing she is doing is only commenting on and calling out the people who are going for the petty attacks which covers up all the real issues about her. It makes her opponents look like they have no argument against her ideas and makes her look more successful than she is.

Everything is stupid. /thread.

Completely agree. Her ideas are stupid, they're very easy to pick apart. 70% wealthy tax? Okay, what do you do when they nope out and we get 0 tax?

We need more politicians to be cute young females who like to gyrate their tatas on video IMHO......

Let's not forget that as such people squirrel away their wealth or leave the country entirely, the definition of 'wealthy' will get defined downward. Own two cars? Wealthy. Paid your house off? Wealthy. More than $1000 in savings? Wealthy.
No $7000 will conveniently be the cut off for being wealthy because thats how much she has in her savings account, that makes her poor

All of the news stories about her are pretty dumb. She's just some young woman in Congress. A single vote. It's not like the nation is going to fall into communism because of her. The fact that she's hot and relatable aren't going to help her detractors either. The more they complain about her the more petty they look.

All of this focus on her being a woman is a bit creepy. What ever happened at just laughing at Commies and their exceptional ideas?

I agree with all of you on this since these people before they caught wind of her said that the people who were upset about trump had TDS and were snowflake liberals. Now Cortez has riled them to the point that they obsess over her as Chris Hayes from MSNBC put it she "lives rent-free in the minds of conservatives" according to realclearpolitics and before that, some conservatives tried in vain to warn their bretheren not to do this petty criticizing.

What she says can be outlandish and while her age and apparent inexperience can be worrisome to people but when someone used up all of the "ammo" they had against someone and have to resort to using a video of them dancing, how they dress and look and anything else that is completely unrelated to their policies makes it does nothing but show they are desperate and as bad as if not worse than the person they are targeting.

It's classic nontroversy. I don't think anyone on either side is fixated on a "dancing" video and associated discussion as the thing that will destroy/boost her nascent political career, rather the MSM had a slow news day and decided to stir up some interest in an easy topic by portraying a handful of meanspirited twitter posts as a mass outrage harassment campaign.

BU isn’t cheap, how’d she pay for it?

Based upon a high school science fair project, she got scholarships from BU and Intel under a program with the specific goal of getting women(especially pee oh sees) into STEM.

But math is like *tee hee* hard, and that didn't last long. She switched to "soft science" humanities and identity grievance studies pretty quick, but she still got the scholarships, because yanking them away would've been bad optics.

And people thought she’d be good at handling macroeconomics? I understand changing a major (lots of people do it), but what I don’t understand is how she got a degree in economics and thinks socialism/communism is a good idea.

Short answer... she's a dummy.

Long answer... she's a big dummy.

She does what most women end up doing who aren't getting regularly satisfied sexually by a strong man in a committed and loving relationship, and that is act like a batty loon.

According to Wikipedia, she did international relations and a minor in econ. I don't know if econ counts as "soft science" humanities, but I doubt IR is grievance studies. If it were like gender studies or some shit like that I'd agree tho

It is a little amusing that an International Relations major and self-professed Crypto-Jew could not articulate a coherent opinion on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
