I honestly only know about American politics from what I read on the Internet but since we all love shitting on leftists I figured we'd get a kick out of this. Also it's trending on Twitter so you know it's important.

NEW YORK — Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a 28-year-old political novice running on a low budget and an unabashedly liberal platform, upset longtime U.S. Rep. Joseph Crowley on Tuesday in the Democratic congressional primary in New York.

The surprise victory by the community organizer in a district that includes parts of the Bronx and Queens came after an energetic, grassroots campaign that mustered more than enough support in a low-turnout race that many had expected to be an easy win for Crowley, a member of the Democratic House leadership.

“The community is ready for a movement of economic and social justice. That is what we tried to deliver,” said Ocasio-Cortez, who has never held elected office and whose candidacy attracted only modest media attention.

She told The Associated Press after her victory that she didn’t have enough money to do polling in the race, but felt in her gut that her message had a chance to connect.

“I live in this community. I organized in this community. I felt the absence of the incumbent. I knew he didn’t have a strong presence,” she said.

Crowley has been in Congress since 1999 and hadn’t faced an opponent in a primary election since 2004, when Ocasio-Cortez was just a teenager. He was considered a candidate to become the next House speaker if Democrats win the majority.

“It’s not about me,” Crowley, 56, told his supporters at a campaign party following his loss. “It’s about America. I want nothing but the best for Ms. Ocasio-Cortez. I want her to be victorious.”

He later played guitar with a band at the election night gathering, and dedicated the first song, Bruce Springsteen’s “Born to Run,” to Ocasio-Cortez.

Crowley represents New York’s 14th Congressional District, where he is also the leader of the Queens Democratic party.

Ocasio-Cortez was outspent by an 18-1 margin during her race but won the endorsement of some influential groups on the party’s far left, including MoveOn, as well as the actress Cynthia Nixon, who is running for governor. She defeated Crowley by 15 percentage points.

Born in the Bronx to a mother from Puerto Rico and a father who died in 2008, Ocasio-Cortez said she decided to challenge Crowley to push a more progressive stance on economic and other issues.

She attended Boston University, where she earned degrees in economics and international relations, and also spent time working in the office of the late U.S. Sen. Edward Kennedy.

After graduating, she returned to the Bronx where she became a community organizer. In the 2016 presidential campaign she worked for U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders.

Among her issues is expanding the Medicare program to people of all ages and abolishing Immigrations and Customs Enforcement. She recently went to Tornillo, Texas, to protest against policies that have separated parents from their children at the southern U.S. border.

Ocasio-Cortez gained some internet attention for a campaign video called “The Courage to Change,” a two-minute spot for which she wrote the script and featured footage from her own home.

Crowley is chair of the House Democratic Caucus, the fourth-highest ranking position in Democratic leadership in that chamber of Congress.

His loss drew the attention of President Donald Trump.

“Wow! Big Trump Hater Congressman Joe Crowley, who many expected was going to take Nancy Pelosi’s place, just LOST his primary election. In other words, he’s out! That is a big one that nobody saw happening. Perhaps he should have been nicer, and more respectful, to his President!” he tweeted.

The Republican candidate for the office, Anthony Pappas, is running unopposed and had no primary. Pappas teaches economics at St. John’s University.

She was a Bernie campaigner, is supported by BLM, and wants to abolish Immigrations and Customs Enforcement. Also this was in a solid-blue Congressional District so you know she's a shoo-in for next Congress.

But hey, we did get to see Trump laugh at Crowley on Twitter.

This one was pretty funny and I'm not surprised. Rules for thee and all that.

Well obviously the woman who questioned the integrity of politicians taking a paycheck during a government shut down shouldn’t have to apply those same standards to herself! How else is she supposed to pay for 13 rose gold MacBooks? Do you expect her assistants and caseworkers to write shit by hand?

Responding to a news story about fellow Democrats who were hoping to rein her in, Ocasio-Cortez said, "To quote Alan Moore: 'None of you understand. I'm not locked up in here with YOU. You're locked up in here with ME.'"
As someone who read Watchmen, I'm actually a bit offended to be quite honest. This dingbat clearly has only ever watched the movie or seen some quotes at most, because the quote wasn't (directly) from Alan Moore.

That quote was from a character in Watchmen, Rorschach.

Alan Moore wrote Watchmen and all of Rorschach's dialogue though so doesn't that make it his quote?

Seems like an incredibly petty thing to criticize her for.

It is, on the surface.

But read the article again. Occasional Cortex is disparaging the advice of far more experienced politicians on the sole basis of "I'm a Latina and female!"

It's going to be a bloodbath for the Democrats on 2020.

Rorschach was the unhinged lunatic that intentionally went after people before due justice, they respected his ideals and breaking of the law, spreading fear among the underworld.

He was a sort of judge spreading dread among criminals...

Like some sort of Dreadful Judge...

He also believed in a strict Black and White worldview that was incompatible with accepting compromise and applied this to everything - to the point that he’d label female victims as whores who deserved it if he didn’t agree with their life choices prior to that - so much so that he killed himself when faced with a moral dilemma that he couldn’t justify. And despite Moore giving him sympathetic moments, he was very clear that Rorschach’s philosophy and way of living was unhealthy and destructive.

So basically the last character you want to be quoting.

Has it been announced what committees/subcommittees she'll be on? That'll be a good indicator if Dem leadership is trying to make her a figurehead for the benefit of the progressives, or grooming her for more.

Which subcommittees generally indicate the latter?
This is not an exhaustive list but generally: Anything where there's large budget allocations for them (defense, healthcare, etc.) where there's plenty of lobbying (energy and commerce, some agriculture subcommittees, weighs and means etc.), obviously any appropriations committee that handles large amounts of money, or committees where they'd develop further knowledge about procedure (rules, ethics or the overall appropriations committee). But if they put her on committees like the nutrition subcommittee or Native American Affairs well...

It honestly is pretty ridiculous that she's given the attention that she has.

She won an election somewhat unexpectedly, that is genuinely noteworthy. Other than that though, she hasn't even done anything. I chalk up her notoriety to that she's young and attractive. And when I say that I specifically mean her own side wants to pimp it as a point of victimhood. Poor little AOC, the right hates her because attractive women should stay in the kitchen, etc. Only it's them who want to make her a figure based on this. She's a token and it's sad.

Jesus. Imagine her on Weighs and Means? That would be catastrophic. Sidenote: Now I hope she gets on Weighs and Means.

Oh I completely agree but I think how she, and the the rest of her more progressive cohort, are treated House Democratic leadership will be an interesting bellwether to the establishment's true feelings on them.

Please don't speak that evil into the world.

HuffPO:
Conservative Men Are Obsessed With Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Science Tells Us Why.

A crack team of Gender Studies neuroscientists have identified, via cutting-edge brain scan technology, that, in response to AO-C, conservative men's brains show fear and thus AO-C DS (Derangement Syndrome).

It's weird that we need crack teams of neuroscientists to explain the complex reasons why we like goofing on OAC.

When it was Sarah Palin, a simple "because it's fun to goof on bubble-headed bimbos" was perfectly sufficient.

There's been rumors that she's heading for the House Financial Services Committee, according to Politico at least.

So it will be Auntie "most corrupt" Maxine, and Alex "I'm a 29-year-old with an economics degree, and I'm stoked because I just bought my first couch!" from the Bronx in charge of overseeing America's banks and industries?

Because the Dems are obviously hoping for a robust economy in 2020.

I love how the main concern is “she’ll say/do something politically incorrect!!” and not that her proposals are unrealistic/unworkable and that all signs so far point to her being terrible with money at best or a hypocrite at worst.

The future of politics looks even more grim as more millennials eventually get voted in.

Cross-post from @CatParty 's thread on facebook data on gamers today, but she's apparently a League of Legends shitter. Somebody should tell her that they made a ranked league lower than Bronze now, Iron 1 thru 4! :story:
