I honestly only know about American politics from what I read on the Internet but since we all love shitting on leftists I figured we'd get a kick out of this. Also it's trending on Twitter so you know it's important.

NEW YORK — Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a 28-year-old political novice running on a low budget and an unabashedly liberal platform, upset longtime U.S. Rep. Joseph Crowley on Tuesday in the Democratic congressional primary in New York.

The surprise victory by the community organizer in a district that includes parts of the Bronx and Queens came after an energetic, grassroots campaign that mustered more than enough support in a low-turnout race that many had expected to be an easy win for Crowley, a member of the Democratic House leadership.

“The community is ready for a movement of economic and social justice. That is what we tried to deliver,” said Ocasio-Cortez, who has never held elected office and whose candidacy attracted only modest media attention.

She told The Associated Press after her victory that she didn’t have enough money to do polling in the race, but felt in her gut that her message had a chance to connect.

“I live in this community. I organized in this community. I felt the absence of the incumbent. I knew he didn’t have a strong presence,” she said.

Crowley has been in Congress since 1999 and hadn’t faced an opponent in a primary election since 2004, when Ocasio-Cortez was just a teenager. He was considered a candidate to become the next House speaker if Democrats win the majority.

“It’s not about me,” Crowley, 56, told his supporters at a campaign party following his loss. “It’s about America. I want nothing but the best for Ms. Ocasio-Cortez. I want her to be victorious.”

He later played guitar with a band at the election night gathering, and dedicated the first song, Bruce Springsteen’s “Born to Run,” to Ocasio-Cortez.

Crowley represents New York’s 14th Congressional District, where he is also the leader of the Queens Democratic party.

Ocasio-Cortez was outspent by an 18-1 margin during her race but won the endorsement of some influential groups on the party’s far left, including MoveOn, as well as the actress Cynthia Nixon, who is running for governor. She defeated Crowley by 15 percentage points.

Born in the Bronx to a mother from Puerto Rico and a father who died in 2008, Ocasio-Cortez said she decided to challenge Crowley to push a more progressive stance on economic and other issues.

She attended Boston University, where she earned degrees in economics and international relations, and also spent time working in the office of the late U.S. Sen. Edward Kennedy.

After graduating, she returned to the Bronx where she became a community organizer. In the 2016 presidential campaign she worked for U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders.

Among her issues is expanding the Medicare program to people of all ages and abolishing Immigrations and Customs Enforcement. She recently went to Tornillo, Texas, to protest against policies that have separated parents from their children at the southern U.S. border.

Ocasio-Cortez gained some internet attention for a campaign video called “The Courage to Change,” a two-minute spot for which she wrote the script and featured footage from her own home.

Crowley is chair of the House Democratic Caucus, the fourth-highest ranking position in Democratic leadership in that chamber of Congress.

His loss drew the attention of President Donald Trump.

“Wow! Big Trump Hater Congressman Joe Crowley, who many expected was going to take Nancy Pelosi’s place, just LOST his primary election. In other words, he’s out! That is a big one that nobody saw happening. Perhaps he should have been nicer, and more respectful, to his President!” he tweeted.

The Republican candidate for the office, Anthony Pappas, is running unopposed and had no primary. Pappas teaches economics at St. John’s University.

She was a Bernie campaigner, is supported by BLM, and wants to abolish Immigrations and Customs Enforcement. Also this was in a solid-blue Congressional District so you know she's a shoo-in for next Congress.

But hey, we did get to see Trump laugh at Crowley on Twitter.

She's pretty openly corrupt, actual politicians at least try to pretend they aren't. She's also extremely unpopular within her own party and you can bet her rivals would love to throw her under the bus, hypocrisy be damned.

Something will most likely come up, like she cheated on her taxes or a sex tape gets posted on the internet.

She's cut from the same cloth as Wu, would Brianna Wu not most likely face expulsion for Brianna Wu being Brianna Wu?

I secretly wanted Brianna Wu to get into congress just to see how crazy it would be. I kinda got my wish. This woman is batshit insane, and I can't wait for the dirt that's going to get leaked by her own party to put the crazy bitch out to pasture.

The only politician that tweeting comsistently works for is trump because he is savage and doesn't give a fuck. These tweets are gonna bite her in the ass.

Interesting, I'd like to see this "scientific consensus" that says in 12 years the world will be so bad it's unethical to have children. You'd think someone might have mentioned the coming doomsday. Or maybe i just missed it between the ones that said the world would end in 10 years, or the one that says 15 years.

Can't wait till she pisses ol' Hildawg off and she's found dead in her apartment. An apparent suicide via blunt force trauma to the back of the head then rolled herself in carpet and jumped off a bridge.

He's also much, much higher on the food-chain than her.

True, especially since Trump has "Fuck you" money and people threatening to boycott him only makes him chuckle. It's like telling Jeff Bezos that you're not gonna watch The Man in the High Castle. He'll laugh, snort coke off a high end hooker's ass with a 100 dollar bill that he then burns.

Its always unethical for somebody like AOC to have kids...
Also Yeah the world will be pretty shit in 12 years, if we dont build alot of walls and end the population explosion in africa.

for The rest, well Europe gets a bit hotter and dryer in the south(with alot better climate in the north and east), for the US, say BB to alot of coastal shitholes.

I'm calling it now, this bitch is getting expelled from congress. She lacks the political allies to protect her from being voted off the island.

I don't know if there's such a thing as a "elephants graveyard" in American congress/politics, wouldn't surprise me if there was. It's a place where politicians/government officials are sent to die, purely conceptually, it actually means that they get some non-work and are hopefully out of sight and out of mind until their term/assignment is up.

like the rubber rooms for california teachers, AOC will serve only to waste taxpayer money whilst emboldening neoreactionary conservatives

Hypothetically, let's say America did cut down emissions to zero. Wouldn't we still hit the tipping point from countries like China and shit anyways?

China and India are the biggest fucking polluters on the planet. Honestly it would probably be both patriotic and environmental to buy American. But liberals hate America so they would rather die than support America.

Not even. The "doomsday" people are scaremongering about will come and pass, and things will be exactly the same as they were before... except it will gradually get a little hotter each year and rain a little more in some areas. It's not like January 1, 2031 will hit and suddenly we will all have to live underground, wear gasmasks when leaving the house, and run out of water globally. This is all just Y2K all over again.

Not that climate change isn't real, but consensus among people who don't just want clicks and/or ad revenue is that what's most likely to happen is that warming is curbed around 4 degrees and the weather will get worse, but we might not hit the 6 degrees "everyone dies" point lots of people are screaming about.

I don't get what the point of such dire messages as "we're all gonna die in 12 years and unless this bill gets passed we can't stop it". Like, what does that do except make people throw their hands up and say "well, I might as well not even try to reduce my carbon footprint, then"?

That's the problem with using the nuclear option when trying to persuade people. Eventually, like the boy who cries wolf, you are gonna be ignored even if you're right. Reputation is the heart and soul of persuasion. Rarely a person can be truly persuasive for a long time if they are known as a drama queen. Doom and gloom doesn't go very well unless you have hard evidence for said doom and gloom. Even then, you have to know how to shape your message to get across.

Yep. Even by their own numbers, America is already so far ahead of many sections of the world that, if we all committed mass suicide tomorrow, we wouldn't amount to much more than a rounding error in the math.

Graphs sometimes deceptively try to show otherwise, but look into how the data is being displayed - by trying to tie it to a per-capita display, or by relative strength of the economy are two common and easy ways to massage the data to get it to look how they want it to.

It turns out being poor as shit and massively overpopulated are not good ways to reduce pollution.
