I honestly only know about American politics from what I read on the Internet but since we all love shitting on leftists I figured we'd get a kick out of this. Also it's trending on Twitter so you know it's important.

NEW YORK — Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a 28-year-old political novice running on a low budget and an unabashedly liberal platform, upset longtime U.S. Rep. Joseph Crowley on Tuesday in the Democratic congressional primary in New York.

The surprise victory by the community organizer in a district that includes parts of the Bronx and Queens came after an energetic, grassroots campaign that mustered more than enough support in a low-turnout race that many had expected to be an easy win for Crowley, a member of the Democratic House leadership.

“The community is ready for a movement of economic and social justice. That is what we tried to deliver,” said Ocasio-Cortez, who has never held elected office and whose candidacy attracted only modest media attention.

She told The Associated Press after her victory that she didn’t have enough money to do polling in the race, but felt in her gut that her message had a chance to connect.

“I live in this community. I organized in this community. I felt the absence of the incumbent. I knew he didn’t have a strong presence,” she said.

Crowley has been in Congress since 1999 and hadn’t faced an opponent in a primary election since 2004, when Ocasio-Cortez was just a teenager. He was considered a candidate to become the next House speaker if Democrats win the majority.

“It’s not about me,” Crowley, 56, told his supporters at a campaign party following his loss. “It’s about America. I want nothing but the best for Ms. Ocasio-Cortez. I want her to be victorious.”

He later played guitar with a band at the election night gathering, and dedicated the first song, Bruce Springsteen’s “Born to Run,” to Ocasio-Cortez.

Crowley represents New York’s 14th Congressional District, where he is also the leader of the Queens Democratic party.

Ocasio-Cortez was outspent by an 18-1 margin during her race but won the endorsement of some influential groups on the party’s far left, including MoveOn, as well as the actress Cynthia Nixon, who is running for governor. She defeated Crowley by 15 percentage points.

Born in the Bronx to a mother from Puerto Rico and a father who died in 2008, Ocasio-Cortez said she decided to challenge Crowley to push a more progressive stance on economic and other issues.

She attended Boston University, where she earned degrees in economics and international relations, and also spent time working in the office of the late U.S. Sen. Edward Kennedy.

After graduating, she returned to the Bronx where she became a community organizer. In the 2016 presidential campaign she worked for U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders.

Among her issues is expanding the Medicare program to people of all ages and abolishing Immigrations and Customs Enforcement. She recently went to Tornillo, Texas, to protest against policies that have separated parents from their children at the southern U.S. border.

Ocasio-Cortez gained some internet attention for a campaign video called “The Courage to Change,” a two-minute spot for which she wrote the script and featured footage from her own home.

Crowley is chair of the House Democratic Caucus, the fourth-highest ranking position in Democratic leadership in that chamber of Congress.

His loss drew the attention of President Donald Trump.

“Wow! Big Trump Hater Congressman Joe Crowley, who many expected was going to take Nancy Pelosi’s place, just LOST his primary election. In other words, he’s out! That is a big one that nobody saw happening. Perhaps he should have been nicer, and more respectful, to his President!” he tweeted.

The Republican candidate for the office, Anthony Pappas, is running unopposed and had no primary. Pappas teaches economics at St. John’s University.

She was a Bernie campaigner, is supported by BLM, and wants to abolish Immigrations and Customs Enforcement. Also this was in a solid-blue Congressional District so you know she's a shoo-in for next Congress.

But hey, we did get to see Trump laugh at Crowley on Twitter.

I'm sure this could carry it's own thread, but it fits right in here, too.

And some select shots:

"It's time to treat the Green New Deal with the seriousness it deserves."

Rated disagree; she's there now.
I disagree with your disagreement. Once she starts openly talking about disenfranchising midwestern voters and “obsolete white people”, then I’ll say she’s Moviebob with smaller tits.

I agree with your disagreement of my disagreement if for no other reason than the on target "smaller tits" comment.

edit: jfc that video is one of the funniest things i've seen in a long time. mike is struggling to get through it all and the girl is trying real hard not to laugh but i almost fell out of my chair when he starts blandly describing the print of reagan firing a machine gun from the back of a dinosaur with a rocket launcher.

also she looks like donna from the west wing, tv truly is becoming reality

JESUS CHRIST, I THOUGHT THOSE WERE PHOTOSHOPS.
I never thought I'd say this over-used meme but...god damn...we live in the Best Timeline.

Well that's a bit disingenuous considering that 0 Democrats even voted on the bill in the first place. Nearly every single one of them only voted "present" so if they cared that much about the bill they sure didn't show it when the time came to throw their votes on the table. I feel like this headline may be just the tiniest bit misleading.

Oh, the Green New Deal failed, by the way. It got literally 0 votes. 43 Democrats voted "present" and Jones, Sinema, Manchin, and King voted with Republicans to shoot the bill in the foot.

If you showed me that video without telling me it was real, I would swear it was something that the Onion put together. I'm still not even sure this is real. If they did this more often, C-SPAN would sweep the ratings.

Hmmmm

Sounds to me like the crazy lady has shelled out some big bucks for a Pro PR firms to start running defense for her. I'm seeing a lot of articles popping up that are "trying to correct" the wrong idea's floating around Ms Ocasio-Cortez

Either that or the DNC gave the ok for Share Blue to add her to their list of correct candidates to push and massage.

Either way its just drawing more attention to her crazy eyes and crazy plans.

She was so close to grasping reality today but some senatorial shitposting must means she's right and these reeepublicans are mean and dumb!

That's pretty definitive, but I have to admit that I'm still a little bit confused about the Democrat's critique over the vote being held. What would the Democrat's preferred course of action be, having it exist in some undefined state for some undefined period of time? All this really seems to indicate is that the Senate is unconvinced that the legislative trajectory proposed within the Green New Deal wouldn't be beneficial for the United States.

Wasn't she posting pictures from Spongebob on her Twitter a little while ago to critique critics of the Green New Deal? Stones, glass houses. If the discourse doesn't seem beneficial to the state of politics, perhaps not contributing to it would be the smarter play.

"If this guy can be Senator, you can do anything."

Zero. Self. Awareness.

I would assume that since it was never actually proposed as a bill to be voted on they view the Senate having a ceremonial vote on it to be rubbing it in the Democrat's faces. They wouldn't have this problem if they tard wrangled AOC and got her to shut the fuck up.

I feel like that needs to be clipped out and put in a few dozen headlines:

Zero Senators Vote "Yes" On Green New Deal

Good lord. I shared the video of Lee with an old friend. Definitely anti-Trump, but I rarely talk politics with him post-Trump. Not worth it, really.

Naive me, I thought maybe it would be a bit of brevity from the ORANGEMANBAD brain. Nope. He texted back:

"Disgusting. He shouldn't be allowed to do that. HE should be impeached. Probably a bunch of Nazi mad scientists worked that out in some laboratory."

He's 68 years old. It's pretty fucked how much TDS fucks with the people in our lives.

The point of the vote was to force Senate Democrats to stand by their nonsense...Which literally none of them did.
The NRSC guys are taking the opportunity to shit on all the 2020 Dems up they'll be going after. Mark Warner, Tina Smith, Gary Peters, and Jeanne Shaheen being the main targets.
Edit You can also throw Doug Jones and New Mexico's Class 2 Senate seat onto that list but since Tom Udall is retiring and short of Roy Moore going for round 2 Jones is almost certainly a freebie I just kept it to the main four.
