I honestly only know about American politics from what I read on the Internet but since we all love shitting on leftists I figured we'd get a kick out of this. Also it's trending on Twitter so you know it's important.

NEW YORK — Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a 28-year-old political novice running on a low budget and an unabashedly liberal platform, upset longtime U.S. Rep. Joseph Crowley on Tuesday in the Democratic congressional primary in New York.

The surprise victory by the community organizer in a district that includes parts of the Bronx and Queens came after an energetic, grassroots campaign that mustered more than enough support in a low-turnout race that many had expected to be an easy win for Crowley, a member of the Democratic House leadership.

“The community is ready for a movement of economic and social justice. That is what we tried to deliver,” said Ocasio-Cortez, who has never held elected office and whose candidacy attracted only modest media attention.

She told The Associated Press after her victory that she didn’t have enough money to do polling in the race, but felt in her gut that her message had a chance to connect.

“I live in this community. I organized in this community. I felt the absence of the incumbent. I knew he didn’t have a strong presence,” she said.

Crowley has been in Congress since 1999 and hadn’t faced an opponent in a primary election since 2004, when Ocasio-Cortez was just a teenager. He was considered a candidate to become the next House speaker if Democrats win the majority.

“It’s not about me,” Crowley, 56, told his supporters at a campaign party following his loss. “It’s about America. I want nothing but the best for Ms. Ocasio-Cortez. I want her to be victorious.”

He later played guitar with a band at the election night gathering, and dedicated the first song, Bruce Springsteen’s “Born to Run,” to Ocasio-Cortez.

Crowley represents New York’s 14th Congressional District, where he is also the leader of the Queens Democratic party.

Ocasio-Cortez was outspent by an 18-1 margin during her race but won the endorsement of some influential groups on the party’s far left, including MoveOn, as well as the actress Cynthia Nixon, who is running for governor. She defeated Crowley by 15 percentage points.

Born in the Bronx to a mother from Puerto Rico and a father who died in 2008, Ocasio-Cortez said she decided to challenge Crowley to push a more progressive stance on economic and other issues.

She attended Boston University, where she earned degrees in economics and international relations, and also spent time working in the office of the late U.S. Sen. Edward Kennedy.

After graduating, she returned to the Bronx where she became a community organizer. In the 2016 presidential campaign she worked for U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders.

Among her issues is expanding the Medicare program to people of all ages and abolishing Immigrations and Customs Enforcement. She recently went to Tornillo, Texas, to protest against policies that have separated parents from their children at the southern U.S. border.

Ocasio-Cortez gained some internet attention for a campaign video called “The Courage to Change,” a two-minute spot for which she wrote the script and featured footage from her own home.

Crowley is chair of the House Democratic Caucus, the fourth-highest ranking position in Democratic leadership in that chamber of Congress.

His loss drew the attention of President Donald Trump.

“Wow! Big Trump Hater Congressman Joe Crowley, who many expected was going to take Nancy Pelosi’s place, just LOST his primary election. In other words, he’s out! That is a big one that nobody saw happening. Perhaps he should have been nicer, and more respectful, to his President!” he tweeted.

The Republican candidate for the office, Anthony Pappas, is running unopposed and had no primary. Pappas teaches economics at St. John’s University.

She was a Bernie campaigner, is supported by BLM, and wants to abolish Immigrations and Customs Enforcement. Also this was in a solid-blue Congressional District so you know she's a shoo-in for next Congress.

But hey, we did get to see Trump laugh at Crowley on Twitter.

It's almost like the DNC and by extension their MSM cohorts are desperately trying to distract from the fact that what little platform they have left is anathema to any regular american.

"Vote for us! We have 'young' people! We're the cool party!"

Whenever I see a "young" politician, I think "Oh, great. Some idiot who's gonna stay there for the next 60 years..."

Agreed. The way you wrote it makes it sound like some sort of early 2000s film with Anne Hathaway, but it's almost as if that's the narrative they're aiming for. I honestly don't know what the media's obsession with "vibrant YOUNG politicians" is. I'm not saying let the Boomers reign forever, but youth isn't exactly a plus when you're voting on things like fiscal policy for the entire country.
anne hathaway or disney princess, starry-eyed at the ball (halls of congress).

cinderella can't appear too ambitious, so that's where her bio really stands out. time mag story says the party called her up & asked her to run, she fit the profile they wanted.

she was drafted; the perfect princess--she did not elbow her way in like some crass bitch (read: hillary), she was invited & graciously accepted. young women will love that narrative since they've been ingesting some version of it their whole lives. she believes in DUTY, in righting wrongs! very disney/superhero.

also in time mag story: her lipstick brand sold out within hours after she posted the name of it. that's hella popularity with young women.

Whenever I see something like this, I'm reminded of this bit by Craig Ferguson

Does this resonate with common people? I can't imagine many people voting for someone young, to be honest. I'm in my thirties and I dunno if I would vote for someone in their 20s. It can work with ditzy millenials, but not the working class.

I could easily vote for a younger person who's consistently able to articulate rational ideas and whose policies support or at least don't actively try to harm or degrade legal residents. I couldn't vote for someone like AOC, but I would never vote for a hack like Bernie, either, and he's old as fuck.

unfortunately, to me she sounds like a teenager who somehow one day magically found herself in the congress.

I previously made the joke that when she uses her serious, grown-up voice she sounds like a tall twelve year old, one of those girls that had a sudden growth spurt and is almost a head taller than the boys in grade 6, it's a bit similar to how Elizabeth Holmes tries to speak to give her some gravitas. Maybe they should make an AOC movie, "13 going on 30" mixed with "King Ralph" set in Congress or her as POTUS.

I'm not sure if you're aware, but the DNC has recently lost all reason.

To actually answer your question though, I think what's going on here is that the DNC doesn't really understand why AOC got elected, much in the same way that they didn't understand (and still don't) why Trump got elected.

I can guarantee she got most of her vote from her unbelievable promises of gibs combined with the "woke PoC" bullshit. She could've been 20 or 60 years old, I don't think it'd have made a difference as long as her platform was the same. The DNC apparently thinks it's because she's "a new face for the party" or some such hokum.

ORANGE MAN BAD, but his supporters are worse!

I wonder what exactly she expects these "conversation seeking" people to do when the people they pester do the sane thing and tell such assholes to shut the fuck up?

The conversation isn't meant to be two parties talking to each other. It's a set up for a one way dialogue.

Yes, vilifying everyone to the right of Stalin worked so well the last election, just keep it up, bound to be effective one of these times, kiddo.

tl;dr: The U.S. needs it's own 'Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution' which will destroy the entire right, and purge the Democrats of anyone who doesn't parrot DSA thought.
Nono, that not how communism works, rightwingers are workers and farmers, they are the good guys!
Shot everyone with glasses, eat that reading scum!
Pol Pot 2020!

Trump "REANIMATED" racism? Is she saying that we weren't listening to constant accusations of it towards everyone even before he ran for office? It's not the first time I've seen someone try to frame things like that but it never makes sense.
