I honestly only know about American politics from what I read on the Internet but since we all love shitting on leftists I figured we'd get a kick out of this. Also it's trending on Twitter so you know it's important.

NEW YORK — Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a 28-year-old political novice running on a low budget and an unabashedly liberal platform, upset longtime U.S. Rep. Joseph Crowley on Tuesday in the Democratic congressional primary in New York.

The surprise victory by the community organizer in a district that includes parts of the Bronx and Queens came after an energetic, grassroots campaign that mustered more than enough support in a low-turnout race that many had expected to be an easy win for Crowley, a member of the Democratic House leadership.

“The community is ready for a movement of economic and social justice. That is what we tried to deliver,” said Ocasio-Cortez, who has never held elected office and whose candidacy attracted only modest media attention.

She told The Associated Press after her victory that she didn’t have enough money to do polling in the race, but felt in her gut that her message had a chance to connect.

“I live in this community. I organized in this community. I felt the absence of the incumbent. I knew he didn’t have a strong presence,” she said.

Crowley has been in Congress since 1999 and hadn’t faced an opponent in a primary election since 2004, when Ocasio-Cortez was just a teenager. He was considered a candidate to become the next House speaker if Democrats win the majority.

“It’s not about me,” Crowley, 56, told his supporters at a campaign party following his loss. “It’s about America. I want nothing but the best for Ms. Ocasio-Cortez. I want her to be victorious.”

He later played guitar with a band at the election night gathering, and dedicated the first song, Bruce Springsteen’s “Born to Run,” to Ocasio-Cortez.

Crowley represents New York’s 14th Congressional District, where he is also the leader of the Queens Democratic party.

Ocasio-Cortez was outspent by an 18-1 margin during her race but won the endorsement of some influential groups on the party’s far left, including MoveOn, as well as the actress Cynthia Nixon, who is running for governor. She defeated Crowley by 15 percentage points.

Born in the Bronx to a mother from Puerto Rico and a father who died in 2008, Ocasio-Cortez said she decided to challenge Crowley to push a more progressive stance on economic and other issues.

She attended Boston University, where she earned degrees in economics and international relations, and also spent time working in the office of the late U.S. Sen. Edward Kennedy.

After graduating, she returned to the Bronx where she became a community organizer. In the 2016 presidential campaign she worked for U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders.

Among her issues is expanding the Medicare program to people of all ages and abolishing Immigrations and Customs Enforcement. She recently went to Tornillo, Texas, to protest against policies that have separated parents from their children at the southern U.S. border.

Ocasio-Cortez gained some internet attention for a campaign video called “The Courage to Change,” a two-minute spot for which she wrote the script and featured footage from her own home.

Crowley is chair of the House Democratic Caucus, the fourth-highest ranking position in Democratic leadership in that chamber of Congress.

His loss drew the attention of President Donald Trump.

“Wow! Big Trump Hater Congressman Joe Crowley, who many expected was going to take Nancy Pelosi’s place, just LOST his primary election. In other words, he’s out! That is a big one that nobody saw happening. Perhaps he should have been nicer, and more respectful, to his President!” he tweeted.

The Republican candidate for the office, Anthony Pappas, is running unopposed and had no primary. Pappas teaches economics at St. John’s University.

She was a Bernie campaigner, is supported by BLM, and wants to abolish Immigrations and Customs Enforcement. Also this was in a solid-blue Congressional District so you know she's a shoo-in for next Congress.

But hey, we did get to see Trump laugh at Crowley on Twitter.

Yeah, I commute 50 miles for work. Each way. That's like traveling from Brussels to Antwerp every day.

In our area, many people commute much further than that if they want a "good" job. For close to two years commuted almost 90 miles each way to work in Silicon Valley. Drove 40 miles to train station, then train to station, then shuttle from station to work. About 2 and a half hours, each way. To go home, reverse the process. You have no life during the week. You'll also see this in the greater Washington, DC area - people commuting great distances to work because housing is less expensive the further you get from the national capital area.

TFW a member of Congress unironically responds "u mad bro? epic win emoji" to criticism

The absolute state of US liberals.

Omar and Tlaib are not Representatives who happen to be Muslim, they are Muslim Representatives. BIG difference.

As an aside, by their pronouncements and actions these three critters have wrecked their ability to work with the Administration on any serious, non-routine issue affecting a constituent/constituents.

They really thought they'd be able to ramrod through whatever they wanted by crying "Muh Islamophobia!" (Or "Muh strong woman-led socialism! for AOC) and were so blinded by the allure of perceived power to right social wrongs, as they saw them as a rep, they never bothered to actually study what it takes to use that power effectively as a rep. (they thought the lightsaber was all you needed to be a Jedi knight, sorry for the groan-worthy comparison)

So even trying to consensus build with other reps was never on the table, and the economic feasibility or Constitutional legality of their legislation plans was never thought out. They literally thought they, personally, could introduce a bill that said "Pollution now illegal, hate speech now illegal, everyone will live happily" Demand it be passed, and then live as a hero forevermore. How could it not work? The prog stack told them only bigots would say "no" and its' "Current Year" and the Constitution is an outdated sexist, racist, doubleplusungood document that means nothing.

And now they are flabbergast that not only did these bills get a big fat ZERO when it comes to "yes" votes, but, now all these people, these TROLLS are bombarding their office with complaints about how what they're doing is "Unconstituional?", only the Alt-Right cares about that outdated thing! (To continue the metaphor, they got their lightsaber, and since they never trained, the instant they turned it on they lopped off an arm, their own arm)

And now, when faced with a lack of any success on their grand schemes, and a constituency who, when all they see from their official is a never ending tweet-stream about fighting grand fights and solving world hunger and sticking it to bigots and sexists and inspiring the little girls, asks "what about our potholes?" They are told "Shut up, trolls! You can't treat a LEADER this way!!!!!!"

This is how people who lived in online hugboxes all their lives and never touched the real world act.

Yeah, I commute 50 miles for work. Each way. That's like traveling from Brussels to Antwerp every day.
I commute about the same distance, I work in a somewhat niche field that for some reason only has jobs that are far away from me. At least I commute in the opposite direction of most traffic, so I'm not sitting in gridlock every day. I don't know how people can do that...

On topic... really, you mad bro? Firstly, you stupid tooth golem, it's "U mad bro?", spelling out "You" is too much effort for what is meant to be a low effort troll (See "git gud").
Secondly, you responded to a third party talking about a different party saying you suck. Saying "You mad bro" to that means you think the Daily Beast is mad that someone talked mean about you. I realize how terrifying going outside your hugbox is, but directly addressing criticism generally works better.

Oops I think I A-logged (whatever that means) since I addressed this directly to cortez herself. Oh well, maybe someone will tell her about this and she'll ask them if they're mad.

I dunno, the Green New Deal was clearly just propaganda that was never intended to be implemented, or she wouldn't have been mad it was brought to a vote.

I dunno, she honestly seems stupid enough that she could hold both views at the same time, that it was simultaneously great legislation that should be implemented and also that actually voting whether to implement it or not was some kind of horrible stunt against her.

Again, remember, she thinks the three branches of government are "the Presidency, the House, and the Senate". It's entirely possible she thought that it was the voting part that was the stunt as opposed to somehow it just being implemented without a vote because she's the boss.

Haven't read the entire thread, but every time I think AOC cannot say something more stupid than the last time, I am proven wrong. Did this child ever study American history? Has she ever picked up any book other than a coloring book? To say the GOP made an Amendment to keep FDR from being re-elected was almost beyond comprehension, it was so stupid.

She is a representative of a large segment of our population. She didn't read that in a history book, someone told her that's what happened and she very simply and immediately accepted it as fact (see also "World Ending in 12 years", "Socialism can work", "Trump is a racist", etc).

She isn't the only one who does this, there are huge parts of our population that hear information from one "source" (a facebook post, John Oliver, Rush Limbaugh, CNN/Fox News, whatever) and that's taken as an undisputed fact that cannot be reasoned with. This is simply the first (and sadly, likely not last) time one of "those" people got elected to a congressional office.

People like this have always existed and always held political office, twitter just didn't exist to broadcast their every random gaff to the general public.

Yeah, and I wouldn't be so quick to say she's the dumbest one. I mean, M'lady Maxine Waters is up there.

But never forget Hank Johnson, the brilliant genius who was brave enough to ask - Can we put 8000 marines on guam without it tipping over? https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/tipping-point/

I mean, I am pretty sure even Occasional Cortex understands that islands aren't like... floating on top of the ocean. At least, she's avoided revealing that she thinks they do float on top of the ocean, which is still smarter than Hank Johnson.

Both.

She's not bright but for a media finger puppet politician she's not exceptionally stupid. Her handlers just suck.

If you don't think she's a moron you haven't been paying attention. It's not an image problem, she's sincerely an idiot. Her only image problem is that people keep getting an accurate image of what a drooling imbecile she is.
