I honestly only know about American politics from what I read on the Internet but since we all love shitting on leftists I figured we'd get a kick out of this. Also it's trending on Twitter so you know it's important.

NEW YORK — Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a 28-year-old political novice running on a low budget and an unabashedly liberal platform, upset longtime U.S. Rep. Joseph Crowley on Tuesday in the Democratic congressional primary in New York.

The surprise victory by the community organizer in a district that includes parts of the Bronx and Queens came after an energetic, grassroots campaign that mustered more than enough support in a low-turnout race that many had expected to be an easy win for Crowley, a member of the Democratic House leadership.

“The community is ready for a movement of economic and social justice. That is what we tried to deliver,” said Ocasio-Cortez, who has never held elected office and whose candidacy attracted only modest media attention.

She told The Associated Press after her victory that she didn’t have enough money to do polling in the race, but felt in her gut that her message had a chance to connect.

“I live in this community. I organized in this community. I felt the absence of the incumbent. I knew he didn’t have a strong presence,” she said.

Crowley has been in Congress since 1999 and hadn’t faced an opponent in a primary election since 2004, when Ocasio-Cortez was just a teenager. He was considered a candidate to become the next House speaker if Democrats win the majority.

“It’s not about me,” Crowley, 56, told his supporters at a campaign party following his loss. “It’s about America. I want nothing but the best for Ms. Ocasio-Cortez. I want her to be victorious.”

He later played guitar with a band at the election night gathering, and dedicated the first song, Bruce Springsteen’s “Born to Run,” to Ocasio-Cortez.

Crowley represents New York’s 14th Congressional District, where he is also the leader of the Queens Democratic party.

Ocasio-Cortez was outspent by an 18-1 margin during her race but won the endorsement of some influential groups on the party’s far left, including MoveOn, as well as the actress Cynthia Nixon, who is running for governor. She defeated Crowley by 15 percentage points.

Born in the Bronx to a mother from Puerto Rico and a father who died in 2008, Ocasio-Cortez said she decided to challenge Crowley to push a more progressive stance on economic and other issues.

She attended Boston University, where she earned degrees in economics and international relations, and also spent time working in the office of the late U.S. Sen. Edward Kennedy.

After graduating, she returned to the Bronx where she became a community organizer. In the 2016 presidential campaign she worked for U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders.

Among her issues is expanding the Medicare program to people of all ages and abolishing Immigrations and Customs Enforcement. She recently went to Tornillo, Texas, to protest against policies that have separated parents from their children at the southern U.S. border.

Ocasio-Cortez gained some internet attention for a campaign video called “The Courage to Change,” a two-minute spot for which she wrote the script and featured footage from her own home.

Crowley is chair of the House Democratic Caucus, the fourth-highest ranking position in Democratic leadership in that chamber of Congress.

His loss drew the attention of President Donald Trump.

“Wow! Big Trump Hater Congressman Joe Crowley, who many expected was going to take Nancy Pelosi’s place, just LOST his primary election. In other words, he’s out! That is a big one that nobody saw happening. Perhaps he should have been nicer, and more respectful, to his President!” he tweeted.

The Republican candidate for the office, Anthony Pappas, is running unopposed and had no primary. Pappas teaches economics at St. John’s University.

She was a Bernie campaigner, is supported by BLM, and wants to abolish Immigrations and Customs Enforcement. Also this was in a solid-blue Congressional District so you know she's a shoo-in for next Congress.

But hey, we did get to see Trump laugh at Crowley on Twitter.

I'm more interested in that faux Humble Roots crap she's trying to pull.
Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't she spend most of her childhood out in Westchester County or some other yuppie New York suburb?
Oh and yeah AOC the Working Class are great!...Until they vote GOP and then all those Archie Bunkers instantly become scum to people like you.

Yes, her family moved to Yorktown Heights in Westchester County when she was five; she graduated from Yorktown High School.

The O-Cs lived in a modest/normal house, not a Scarsdale mansion, but AOC definitely benefited from this upbringing and is not "from the Bronx."

Here you go, this is what I have been saying all this time: when she tries to sound like she's from the hood she puts on a black accent. She doesn't know how to do an authentic working class Latina accent:

"A.O.C was speaking in front of a large group of black people, so of course , she had to break out her best black speak. When will this stop? When we make it stop."

I mean, I am pretty sure even Occasional Cortex understands that islands aren't like... floating on top of the ocean. At least, she's avoided revealing that she thinks they do float on top of the ocean, which is still smarter than Hank Johnson.
In his defense, Anderson AFB has been called a permanent aircraft carrier and a floating air force base. He clearly didn't understand those were jokes.
In Kansas and the Dakotas where corn doesn't grow well and wheat is too valuable to be made into those type of low value goods they grow barley instead and it pretty much serves the same purposes. Barley malt is a wonderful "real" sugar substitute that makes our favorite type of alcohol. Likewise sorghum molasses in the south in the off year with cotton. In Europe and the US the places that grow potatoes do sugar beets. This type of thing is near universal in agriculture. Cash crop year, sugar year, legume, repeat.
Kansas and the Dakotas grow a shit ton of corn. All 3 are in the top 10 producers and grow an eighth of the total corn production in the US. Admittedly the western parts of each of those states is wheat country unless there is irrigation. There is very little barely grown outside of areas that produce malt barely for breweries. 90% of what is grown outside those areas is for animal feed. At least in the US, sugar beets and potatoes are grown in different areas. Potatoes are WA, OR, ID, and sugar beets are WY, NE, MT

That sounds about right. My sister is a big wig commodity trader and that meshes pretty close to what she's described. Apparently legumes, particularly dry edible beans and soybeans, make up a huge amount of acreage throughout Wisconsin, Michigan, Minnesota, and the Dakotas, which was a surprise to me. I always had it in my head that they would be more of an Oklahoma or Arkansas sort of thing.

I think in the next couple decades, when AOC is an older middle-aged public figure whose name has been known for a good long while, it won't be for being a politician. It'll be for being a rich limlib who makes 7 figures a year doing speaking tours and ad campaigns for whatever the cause of the month is. And oh yeah, hey kids I know in your conscious thought she's always "just been there" without origin but did you know she was actually a congresswoman for one term during the dark orange times that period when the economy was at its best for a decade before or since? Yeah go ahead and make the implicit connection in your heads that that period of prosperity is one more thing to thank her for just because the years line up you stupid college kids, I won't correct your assumptions or anything because context is for nazis, now go start a discussion about it in your holodeck classes about what gender the planet Mars is.

I honestly think she'll get BTFO in 2020 for reasons numerous people here have elaborated on, the dems will let her drop and she'll have no significant support because all the loud voices will be occupied advocating mass suicide after Trump wins his second term. She's not planning on that now, but after it happens she'll rewrite history in her head that it was always her plan to become a private "thought leader" who gets paid to soapbox about problems she'll never have to actually be held responsible for fixing. And not long after the unemployed talking heads on twitter who used to work for buzzfeed will write 27 reasons why her hilarious defeat is actually a big blow to republicans (you won't believe number 16)

Obviously they're not floating on the water, but I've got something in the back of my mind that says Manhattan island is capable of carrying more weight than other similarly sized land masses - is that based on anything, or is it my brain making things up?

There's some very nice strong and shallow bedrock, particularly under lower Manhattan, that makes it a really good place to build skyscrapers. You don't have to drive the piles the structures sit on quite so deep to reach it.

AOC herself is little more than a useful idiot to the Justice Democrats, she looked good for the media and served her purpose in the 2018 midterms and was one of the first ones to get their foot in the door.

But now that I think about it, the more I realize that AOC has already served her purpose for both the DNC establishment and the Justice Democrats insurgency. She got all this buzz from the media and actually got elected. She was simply a token to prove that Millennial SJW types could actually get elected to a national office, and due to the lack of real competition she had in her district, it worked.

Now AOC has proven to be a loud-mouthed moron and the DNC view her as a liability while the Justice Democrats view her as a useful idiot at best and at worst view her as means to draw negative attention that would otherwise be directed at more serious Justice Democrat candidates that could actually pose a threat to the opposition.

@LordKaT brings up a great point about the real issue of the Justice Democrats and that is the fact that a lot of them are backed not only by academia and Millennial SJW's hipsters in the coastal cities, but also by the Silicon Valley tech commissars (Google, Facebook, Twitter, etc.) who generally epitomize the elitist leftist ideal and utterly despise the average working class American (especially if they are white or male), and these Silicon Valley tech giants are among the most powerful and influential companies in the country, and have a near monopoly on digital communication, and are known to collaborate with the Chinese government.

All the hysteria over the Republicans being backed by Russian interests is eerily applicable to the modern Left and their ties to Chinese interests.

This gives me ideas for a sci-fi bizarro world story where the gigantic metropolitan western mecca was built on an artificial island in Florida instead of New England. Architects worldwide consider sideways skyscrapers to be in vogue, comedy news abounds with stories of "New York Man" who beats up his girlfriend while sober instead of on krokodil, the Injustice League conquers the UN and makes it illegal to not commit crimes, etc.

Fake homegirl AOC and fake Mexican Beto O'Rourke what is it with the Democratic Party and their fugazi candidates? Couldn't they at least find a real Mexican-American in the largest state in the continental US or an actual Puerto Rican living in the Bronx, a borough with almost 2 million people? I sort of feel insulted they can't put real effort into it, as if they believe voters are too stupid to tell the difference. OK they probably are but still.

No. To their mind that would mean talking to actual icky poor people.

Islands don't tip over and sink but the land can sag and compress if there's a ton of weight on it. Manhattan island has shallow and thick bedrock that can take a lot of compression so is ideal for skyscrapers. Other islands with the same structures would see them going all leaning tower of Pisa on you as the foundation settled.

I'm not a Republican and I enjoy watching them sperg over every little thing she does, but I sincerely doubt that they're scared of her. I enjoy her as "leftie Trump", but for better or worse Trump actually accomplishes shit

I think the dems plan is to run Cortez as a VP in the 2024 elections

Considering they want to either primary her or just disappear her by redistricting the state and removing hers, I really doubt that. She pushes crap like the GND which just end up embarrassing the party and make it easier for Republicans to attack them and draw the center over to their side during elections.

The only way it would be fair for the Democrats is if the Republicans agree to run with Palin as VP again.
