I honestly only know about American politics from what I read on the Internet but since we all love shitting on leftists I figured we'd get a kick out of this. Also it's trending on Twitter so you know it's important.

NEW YORK — Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a 28-year-old political novice running on a low budget and an unabashedly liberal platform, upset longtime U.S. Rep. Joseph Crowley on Tuesday in the Democratic congressional primary in New York.

The surprise victory by the community organizer in a district that includes parts of the Bronx and Queens came after an energetic, grassroots campaign that mustered more than enough support in a low-turnout race that many had expected to be an easy win for Crowley, a member of the Democratic House leadership.

“The community is ready for a movement of economic and social justice. That is what we tried to deliver,” said Ocasio-Cortez, who has never held elected office and whose candidacy attracted only modest media attention.

She told The Associated Press after her victory that she didn’t have enough money to do polling in the race, but felt in her gut that her message had a chance to connect.

“I live in this community. I organized in this community. I felt the absence of the incumbent. I knew he didn’t have a strong presence,” she said.

Crowley has been in Congress since 1999 and hadn’t faced an opponent in a primary election since 2004, when Ocasio-Cortez was just a teenager. He was considered a candidate to become the next House speaker if Democrats win the majority.

“It’s not about me,” Crowley, 56, told his supporters at a campaign party following his loss. “It’s about America. I want nothing but the best for Ms. Ocasio-Cortez. I want her to be victorious.”

He later played guitar with a band at the election night gathering, and dedicated the first song, Bruce Springsteen’s “Born to Run,” to Ocasio-Cortez.

Crowley represents New York’s 14th Congressional District, where he is also the leader of the Queens Democratic party.

Ocasio-Cortez was outspent by an 18-1 margin during her race but won the endorsement of some influential groups on the party’s far left, including MoveOn, as well as the actress Cynthia Nixon, who is running for governor. She defeated Crowley by 15 percentage points.

Born in the Bronx to a mother from Puerto Rico and a father who died in 2008, Ocasio-Cortez said she decided to challenge Crowley to push a more progressive stance on economic and other issues.

She attended Boston University, where she earned degrees in economics and international relations, and also spent time working in the office of the late U.S. Sen. Edward Kennedy.

After graduating, she returned to the Bronx where she became a community organizer. In the 2016 presidential campaign she worked for U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders.

Among her issues is expanding the Medicare program to people of all ages and abolishing Immigrations and Customs Enforcement. She recently went to Tornillo, Texas, to protest against policies that have separated parents from their children at the southern U.S. border.

Ocasio-Cortez gained some internet attention for a campaign video called “The Courage to Change,” a two-minute spot for which she wrote the script and featured footage from her own home.

Crowley is chair of the House Democratic Caucus, the fourth-highest ranking position in Democratic leadership in that chamber of Congress.

His loss drew the attention of President Donald Trump.

“Wow! Big Trump Hater Congressman Joe Crowley, who many expected was going to take Nancy Pelosi’s place, just LOST his primary election. In other words, he’s out! That is a big one that nobody saw happening. Perhaps he should have been nicer, and more respectful, to his President!” he tweeted.

The Republican candidate for the office, Anthony Pappas, is running unopposed and had no primary. Pappas teaches economics at St. John’s University.

She was a Bernie campaigner, is supported by BLM, and wants to abolish Immigrations and Customs Enforcement. Also this was in a solid-blue Congressional District so you know she's a shoo-in for next Congress.

But hey, we did get to see Trump laugh at Crowley on Twitter.

she made perfect sense though? her ancestors gave up shit so Israel could even be there.

the world is gone to shit, anyway.

To be fair though, they were offered an actual state of their own that was bigger and better. Now, I know it seems unfair that they still had to give up some land, but when pretty much the entire world supports that idea, nothing really you can do about it. Life's unfair, and all that.

Beyond that, it's their own fault for screeching about drowning the Middle East in "rivers of blood", rejecting that partition, and engaging in subsequent wars where they got fucked.

Point is, yes it is unfair, just like the establishment of any other modern State, but they could've gotten a better deal if they didn't behave like bloodthirsty monkeys.

People be reading the retardedly inflammatory headline without reading the actual shit she said. She's calmed by the idea of Palestine giving the Joos a home post-'caust, you morons. She's obviously fucking exceptional but it's stupid and disingenuous to twist her words out of context to jack off to your outrage.

Yo, don't point this out. Half the fun of these threads is seeing the hot takes of idiots that only bothered to read the headline.

I don't get why people would twist her words like that. It's like when I say I get a warm and fuzzy feeling when I think about the KKK lynching black people.

Because civil rights happened after! Don't go misinterpreting my words now

This honestly looks like she's saying it's "calming" in that it's sobering to think of the history of the impact and outcome of world war 2 and its consequences on the Israeli/Palestinian region of the globe, and republicans are using it as an excuse to pearlclutch for points.

But both sides love the whole 'it's not a scandal when someone on my side does it" so fuck them all.

The dems are the ones pushing nonsense about "dogwhistling" and "Anti-semitism" so they can go fuck themselves with the sudden "Wait wait you have to fully read all the context and make sure you comprehend everything around it before you go getting offended".

Meanwhile, people who make an OK symbol are nazi white supremicists. I'm not giving these pieces of shit the benefit of the doubt, by their own words when they say shit like this they mean it. That's how they know Trump is an evil woman hating racist.

I could see it going both ways. It almost strikes me as a troll.

I think I get why the media keeps harping on neo-nazis. So the dems can not lose all of there Jewish voters

They may want to court ethnic groups that may currently have anti-Semitic opinions, but going to point that out isn't Kosher as the DNC may loose their Jewish Paypigs and that cannot stand.

I truly don't understand what the fuck she's saying here. Is the "calming feeling" in regard to the Holocaust or in regard to the negative (and I suppose in her mind, similar) effects that the Holocaust and Zionism had on the Palestinians? And how do either of those atrocious things elicit a "calming feeling"? I can't even twist her words since she's spewing so much nonsense.

I dunno, it reads a bit like she realized partway through what she was saying, and then quickly tried to shift it so she didn't sound like she was happy the Holocaust happened.

It's troubling that people who are supposed to be writing laws have so little understanding of the importance of word choice.

Which, for all people mock the idea that so many politicians are just lawyers, is one reason that's actually a rather good profession to spend some time in before becoming a politician. It actually teaches you about the legal meaning of wording and how to craft a legal document.

The problem is that politics has become an end-goal, so now you basically have people that are just sitting through their law classes and retaining it just long enough to put on a test to get barely passing grades. They don't spend any time as actual lawyers, or if they do their Daddy slots them right in as a partner or something at the law firm rather than making them work their way up by doing any amount of actual work. So they actually don't know any of the useful things that a law degree would teach them for actually legislating, it's all politics.

And then you've got these dumb bitches who have literally not lived a single day in the real adult world who think legislating consists of posting on twitter to "roast" the other side and drafting up feel-good legislation that's not actually supposed to be voted on.

Watch it there, Jiggly! She and Bernie are teaming up to fuck over your credit card interest rates. Because, you know, idiots that have bad credit shouldn't have to pay more than those of us that use credit wisely. Like, you know, I mean, it's not FAIR, right?

You must not fight too often with one enemy, or you will teach him all your art of war. Napoleon Bonaparte
Did Democrats not like it when republicans used the same tactics against them.
