I honestly only know about American politics from what I read on the Internet but since we all love shitting on leftists I figured we'd get a kick out of this. Also it's trending on Twitter so you know it's important.

NEW YORK — Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a 28-year-old political novice running on a low budget and an unabashedly liberal platform, upset longtime U.S. Rep. Joseph Crowley on Tuesday in the Democratic congressional primary in New York.

The surprise victory by the community organizer in a district that includes parts of the Bronx and Queens came after an energetic, grassroots campaign that mustered more than enough support in a low-turnout race that many had expected to be an easy win for Crowley, a member of the Democratic House leadership.

“The community is ready for a movement of economic and social justice. That is what we tried to deliver,” said Ocasio-Cortez, who has never held elected office and whose candidacy attracted only modest media attention.

She told The Associated Press after her victory that she didn’t have enough money to do polling in the race, but felt in her gut that her message had a chance to connect.

“I live in this community. I organized in this community. I felt the absence of the incumbent. I knew he didn’t have a strong presence,” she said.

Crowley has been in Congress since 1999 and hadn’t faced an opponent in a primary election since 2004, when Ocasio-Cortez was just a teenager. He was considered a candidate to become the next House speaker if Democrats win the majority.

“It’s not about me,” Crowley, 56, told his supporters at a campaign party following his loss. “It’s about America. I want nothing but the best for Ms. Ocasio-Cortez. I want her to be victorious.”

He later played guitar with a band at the election night gathering, and dedicated the first song, Bruce Springsteen’s “Born to Run,” to Ocasio-Cortez.

Crowley represents New York’s 14th Congressional District, where he is also the leader of the Queens Democratic party.

Ocasio-Cortez was outspent by an 18-1 margin during her race but won the endorsement of some influential groups on the party’s far left, including MoveOn, as well as the actress Cynthia Nixon, who is running for governor. She defeated Crowley by 15 percentage points.

Born in the Bronx to a mother from Puerto Rico and a father who died in 2008, Ocasio-Cortez said she decided to challenge Crowley to push a more progressive stance on economic and other issues.

She attended Boston University, where she earned degrees in economics and international relations, and also spent time working in the office of the late U.S. Sen. Edward Kennedy.

After graduating, she returned to the Bronx where she became a community organizer. In the 2016 presidential campaign she worked for U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders.

Among her issues is expanding the Medicare program to people of all ages and abolishing Immigrations and Customs Enforcement. She recently went to Tornillo, Texas, to protest against policies that have separated parents from their children at the southern U.S. border.

Ocasio-Cortez gained some internet attention for a campaign video called “The Courage to Change,” a two-minute spot for which she wrote the script and featured footage from her own home.

Crowley is chair of the House Democratic Caucus, the fourth-highest ranking position in Democratic leadership in that chamber of Congress.

His loss drew the attention of President Donald Trump.

“Wow! Big Trump Hater Congressman Joe Crowley, who many expected was going to take Nancy Pelosi’s place, just LOST his primary election. In other words, he’s out! That is a big one that nobody saw happening. Perhaps he should have been nicer, and more respectful, to his President!” he tweeted.

The Republican candidate for the office, Anthony Pappas, is running unopposed and had no primary. Pappas teaches economics at St. John’s University.

She was a Bernie campaigner, is supported by BLM, and wants to abolish Immigrations and Customs Enforcement. Also this was in a solid-blue Congressional District so you know she's a shoo-in for next Congress.

But hey, we did get to see Trump laugh at Crowley on Twitter.

Nah. See, here's the thing: She doesn't criticize Israel, she just hates it. She hates Jews. She even lied to their faces about the "Boycott Divestment & Sanctions" deal that she just tried to shove through. Criticizing Israel is perfectly fine and there's no reason that any government from any country shouldn't be criticized, but the problem is that critique is not just bitching about it. I'll sit here and wait, and in the meantime you can hop your happy ass on Google and point me to a single op-ed that Ilhan Omar has ever written that outlines specific criticisms about the Israeli government.

Her hatred for Israel isn't about policies and it never will be, she's a raging Somali Muslim who spends an unusual amount of time targeting Jewish government and institutions and individuals without ever outlining specifically what it is that she holds in contention, and 99% of the time that's exactly what everyone else does, too. If you come across someone who goes, "I don't like Israel!" and you ask them why you'll get some sort of canned, "They take money from our government!" response and consistently fail to go much deeper than that.

You can't side with pro-Palestine crap like the BDS deal and be pro-Israel at the same time. They're mutually exclusive and she wears a hijab and refuses to condemn the Muslim Brotherhood / Al Qaeda. It's pretty fuckin' obvious which side of the fence she's rooting for.

You guys have seen the politics and demographics of the district she is in right? I hate to break this to you, but not everyone is like you.
a centrists black woman can win there again a far left horseface. the lefties in nyc are mostly pro capitalism and realy wanted those amazon jobs.

Personally, I think the Israel-Palestine conflict is just an excuse for whites to be racist towards browns and browns to feel self righteous towards whites. At least, given Current Year's use of the Internet.

Any legitimacy is lost in the violence and tribalism with racism sprinkled in. Not to mention innocents are suffering.

No she can’t.
She only got 16% of eligible votes and her district had very low turn out.
Her numbers were pretty bad for a NYC democrat to begin with, and now she has the demonrats establishment and some fresh local contenders from the gop against her.
she won less than 1/4 of registered democrats...

Honestly, it's a situation where if there were some way to manage it, I'd say both were doomed to lose, but someone has to win, right?

See, this why people like Paul Joseph Watson are cunts, though. That absolutely did happen but that's not why the journalist went to Somalia at all--it had nothing to do with Omar and trying to rope her into it is just blatantly trying to misrepresent a story in the reader's mind. She wasn't trying to say that the country was completely safe, only that it wasn't as bad as people think that it is. The fact that not even two months later she wound up exploding is just the universe deciding to be a jovial dick.

A lot of people don't like Israel because it's kinda fucked up how many de facto dual Israeli/American citizens we have in our government due to Israel's law of return, among other things.

Pretty sure Omar just hates jews though.

Even then, the utterly worthless De Blasio beat out some generic yet half hispanic Republican woman two to one. Same thing will happen to whoever from the GOP runs against AOC. Running a nameless but intersectionally approved GOP candidate in these blue districts has a bad track record and will never get better due to demographics. What’s more humiliating than AOC is someone who can’t beat AOC. This stronk womyn of colyr is wasting her time and money of whatever dumbass gives any to her.

Right. Democrats are associated with more government services. You cannot overcome that association's primacy no matter how hard a Republican might try.

Idpol considerations are just a bonus on top.

Do American men have such low standards they consider this horse face hot? I see comments all over the place about her being good looking. The only socialized program this country needs is government issued eye glasses for millennial men.

She's not hot, but she is cute and and thin and looks like she has a nice set of breasts. Not every woman has to look like a super model to be attractive, and if you think so well then maybe you might want to go ahead and get out of that closet

Only if you kept your dumb brain to yourself.

It wasn't as bad as people think it is and the shithole that it is go hand to hand in any situation. In the end , Somalia is a shithole.

I originally bought in to the whole meme about the Journalist going there to prove something about Ilhan Omar but when I looked past sensationalist stuff, it turns out, as you say, the universe was just being a dick.

To be attractive enough to be worth mentioning she must rate at least a 2005 Lindsay Lohan.

Some of them will complain about the plight of Palestinians, but tend to get cagey when you ask them what the solution is. Many people who are anti-Israel flat-out want Israel and Israelis to fuck off, which is why all but the most blatant anti-Semites won't admit what their plan is to make things better for Palestinians. Their plan involves all Israelis being forced to move elsewhere at best or being slaughtered by Palestinians and neighboring Arabs at worst.

What's especially absurd about this whole debate is that most Arabs fucking loathe Palestinians. Palestinians are traditionally more "progressive" than their neighbors since they don't force their women under bedsheets 24/7. They also tend to be better educated than their neighbors, and Palestinians living in other Arab countries often work in high-paid professional jobs, especially in the oil industry, which leads to standard "they took our jerbs" whining from the rabble. The only reason other Arabs pretend to give a shit about Palestinians is to stick it to the Jews.

I'm gonna be sincere with you, dude: No one cares about your AOC masturbation fantasies.

Why can’t Israel just force all the palestians to leave and then take all the land and make it part of Israel once and for all. Palestinians hate living there so badly and hate Jews so bad so why can’t they be forced out? Send them to Saudi Arabia or Iraq or something

I'll do you one better:

I don’t think Pelosi could stand two more years of her screeching. I wouldn’t be surprised if Nancy was trying to find ways to not get her re-elected.
I don't think Nancy's gonna run for reelection. She's gotta be like 'I don't need this shit in my life. I'm almost 80 years old. It's time for me to retire. I'm old enough to be these brats' grandmother. Fuck this I'm done. I am so done.'

No one wants the Palestinians.
