I honestly only know about American politics from what I read on the Internet but since we all love shitting on leftists I figured we'd get a kick out of this. Also it's trending on Twitter so you know it's important.

NEW YORK — Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a 28-year-old political novice running on a low budget and an unabashedly liberal platform, upset longtime U.S. Rep. Joseph Crowley on Tuesday in the Democratic congressional primary in New York.

The surprise victory by the community organizer in a district that includes parts of the Bronx and Queens came after an energetic, grassroots campaign that mustered more than enough support in a low-turnout race that many had expected to be an easy win for Crowley, a member of the Democratic House leadership.

“The community is ready for a movement of economic and social justice. That is what we tried to deliver,” said Ocasio-Cortez, who has never held elected office and whose candidacy attracted only modest media attention.

She told The Associated Press after her victory that she didn’t have enough money to do polling in the race, but felt in her gut that her message had a chance to connect.

“I live in this community. I organized in this community. I felt the absence of the incumbent. I knew he didn’t have a strong presence,” she said.

Crowley has been in Congress since 1999 and hadn’t faced an opponent in a primary election since 2004, when Ocasio-Cortez was just a teenager. He was considered a candidate to become the next House speaker if Democrats win the majority.

“It’s not about me,” Crowley, 56, told his supporters at a campaign party following his loss. “It’s about America. I want nothing but the best for Ms. Ocasio-Cortez. I want her to be victorious.”

He later played guitar with a band at the election night gathering, and dedicated the first song, Bruce Springsteen’s “Born to Run,” to Ocasio-Cortez.

Crowley represents New York’s 14th Congressional District, where he is also the leader of the Queens Democratic party.

Ocasio-Cortez was outspent by an 18-1 margin during her race but won the endorsement of some influential groups on the party’s far left, including MoveOn, as well as the actress Cynthia Nixon, who is running for governor. She defeated Crowley by 15 percentage points.

Born in the Bronx to a mother from Puerto Rico and a father who died in 2008, Ocasio-Cortez said she decided to challenge Crowley to push a more progressive stance on economic and other issues.

She attended Boston University, where she earned degrees in economics and international relations, and also spent time working in the office of the late U.S. Sen. Edward Kennedy.

After graduating, she returned to the Bronx where she became a community organizer. In the 2016 presidential campaign she worked for U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders.

Among her issues is expanding the Medicare program to people of all ages and abolishing Immigrations and Customs Enforcement. She recently went to Tornillo, Texas, to protest against policies that have separated parents from their children at the southern U.S. border.

Ocasio-Cortez gained some internet attention for a campaign video called “The Courage to Change,” a two-minute spot for which she wrote the script and featured footage from her own home.

Crowley is chair of the House Democratic Caucus, the fourth-highest ranking position in Democratic leadership in that chamber of Congress.

His loss drew the attention of President Donald Trump.

“Wow! Big Trump Hater Congressman Joe Crowley, who many expected was going to take Nancy Pelosi’s place, just LOST his primary election. In other words, he’s out! That is a big one that nobody saw happening. Perhaps he should have been nicer, and more respectful, to his President!” he tweeted.

The Republican candidate for the office, Anthony Pappas, is running unopposed and had no primary. Pappas teaches economics at St. John’s University.

She was a Bernie campaigner, is supported by BLM, and wants to abolish Immigrations and Customs Enforcement. Also this was in a solid-blue Congressional District so you know she's a shoo-in for next Congress.

But hey, we did get to see Trump laugh at Crowley on Twitter.

Wouldn't the Punic Wars find a better comparison in our post-WW2 activities in Africa and the Middle East?

Not at all. The 1st and 2nd Punic wars were a nation-defining struggle for survival against a determined and capable enemy.

The third Punic War would be like if we went in and slaughtered Krauts in 1990 just for being Krauts.

Our post-ww2 Bullshit is more like Germania and Britain-- fighting benighted savages half a world away just to keep the military busy.

The Persians are the USSR or China, in this analogy.

Carthage is more comparable to the Third Reich and earlier Imperial Germany, or an Imperial Japan for it's time, rather than Saddam's Iraq or Gaddafi's Libya. There's generally major differences between the Punic Wars and the World Wars, but with the US it's more comparable to the Punic Wars. Hannibal isn't like Saddam Hussein or some unknown General in [insert middle eastern regime]. Hannibal is more comparable to a Rommel, Manstein, or Yamamoto.

If people wonder why I'm going back to Republican Rome for comparisons. AOC reminds me of the Populares ideologically, who we're essentially proto-socialists. The populares we're also insufferable pricks from what I could tell, also like Cortez.

Her face didn't even change!

It's like they were grown in the same lab or something.

Its obvious, they're growing progressives in labs like jem'hadar now. How else would they be getting new twitter users?

Sounds about right. and I can see aoc being stupid enough to hear something like that and reply 'populares?? so we're, like, popular then right? right on!' and think its a compliment

The Senate took care of the populist Saturninus by throwing roof tiles off the senate house to bludgeon him to death.

Cortez and Greta are good examples of people the media artificially propped as "triggering conservatives" only for the hype to die after a few months when the public promotely forgot about their existence.
The question is who's the next in line. If you see a thread in A&H about an article describing a literal who woman/"woman" that's "triggeting the Drump" (and it's not a Democrat nominee) then I'd point to her.

I don't think the US is in THE decline so much as it's in A decline (in the overall). Rome went through many, many periods of up-and-down times, over the course of thousands of years. I think we've got a good stretch left in front of us before we're a rump state consisting of Maine, New York and Massachusetts while our ruins are being picked over by archaeology students.

Once upon a time, we gave damn dirty commies the chair for collaborating with the Soviet Union, now we give them "chairs" in the Congress so they pass legislation that will subjugate and control us while they get to live like Kings but pretend to be no different than anyone else.

Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D., N.Y.) on Monday contrasted the annual gun rights rally in Richmond, Va. with the riots after the death of Baltimore resident Freddie Gray and protests following the killing of Eric Garner by New York police.

“When we go out and march for the dignity…of the lives of people like Freddie Gray and Eric Garner, the whole place is surrounded by police in riot gear without a gun in sight [among protesters],” Ocasio-Cortez said at a Monday event. “And here are all of these people [in Richmond], flying Confederate flags with semiautomatic weapons, and there are almost no police officers at that protest.”

Following the death of Freddie Gray in the back of a police van in Baltimore in 2015, the city saw riots so extensive that Governor Larry Hogan declared a state of emergency, while national-guard units deployed to quell the violence. While the officers who arrested Gray were initially charged with murder, all charges were eventually dropped by the prosecution.

During the Second Amendment rally in Richmond, Va. officers arrested one person for covering her face in public, which is banned under Virginia law. The individual was later released, and the rally continued without violence.

On Thursday the New York Times reported that three suspected white nationalists had been arrested, with investigators alleging the three would try to ignite violence at the rally. Governor Graham Northam, who has voiced support for more restrictive gun laws, declared a state of emergency in response to the threat.

i didnt see any confederate flags flying anywhere, let alone semi automatic weapons, and i think there were more than "almost no" police officers spectating the event

This is sort of why I have some doubts about her future book deals and speaking gigs. AOC has set herself up to be a highly visible scapegoat for a crowd that never forgives and never forgets.

AOC: Democratic Party is ‘Not a Left Party,’ It’s a ‘Center-Conservative’ Party

“I wanted to go back to what you said about our ‘left party’. We don’t have a left party in the United States,” declared Ocasio-Cortez. “The Democratic Party is not a left party. The Democratic Party is a center or center-conservative party.”
“They let anybody who the cat dragged in call themselves a progressive. There’s no standard,” she proclaimed

"She is all show and no go."

Instead of giving them the bullet we put them on the "bullet"-like train direct to our Nation's capitol, to make laws and such.

"Niggos can't avoid killing each other, while huwhite men walk around heavily armed and hurt no one."

I see a difference, but what I don't see is how that reflects negatively on the Virginian autist gathering.

I think the problem is that they've been letting anyone who the cat dragged in call themselves a Democrat. That's why Trump won.

The right to peacefully petition the government for redress is enshrined in both the US and Virginian states constitutions. The word "peacefully" is important, here. Violent riots don't count.

Gun rights are also enshrined the the US constitution, no matter how icky all of this makes Ocasio-Cortez feel. I'm curious as to whether she's even read it. I wouldn't be surprised if she hasn't. Even if she has, the likelihood that she understands the Bill of Rights and what each of them means is nonexistent. She's a petulant and self-important brat who has been elevated way above her actual capabilities. But saying these things gets her attention, which is what she really loves.

AOC Hit List Targets Two Dozen Democrats
Last February, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez threatened House Democrats who dared to work with Republicans, saying they were “putting themselves on a list” and that she would help challengers unseat them in 2020. At the time, her more seasoned colleagues assumed such rhetoric would abate once she learned how Congress operates. Rep. Kurt Schrader (D-Ore.), for example, gave her the benefit of the doubt: “She’s new here, feeling her way around. She doesn’t understand how the place works yet.” Presumably, Shrader was disabused of this fantasy when he found his name among the 24 House Democrats who will soon be “primaried” by candidates backed by two political action committees linked to AOC.

A great opportunity is coming up for the Republican party! Conservative Democrats who would otherwise be difficult to defeat will be forced to track left in order to defend themselves against high profile ultra liberal primary challengers.

If all 24 of these seats aren't in Republican control this time next year then it's because the national GOP didn't try hard enough.

Nah, trying hard enough won't be the only factor. The left is ENTRENCHED in some of these area, possibly most, and will vote straight down ballot democrat even if they outright started squawking communist propaganda.

That being said, the Republicans should still try even in those areas. It benefits every other republican for them to spout that, and being able to run on "See, this is what the house Democrats want!" could swing a lot of the more swing districts.
