Eh we'll see, Witcher 3 had stellar worldbuilding and plot/quest design and those are two things that have been severely lacking to say the least in the last few big titles from SE, Forspoken obviously being the most notorious example.
I liked playing Witcher when I didn't draw my sword, unfortunately I needed to do that all the time and because of that it soured my enjoyment until I gave up after 20 hours.
I'd also say I would like to see SE take queues from Trails/Kieski in terms of world building, while I wouldn't call Trails a series for everyone I think it does world building better than the majority of JRPG games. Having NPCs who actually react to shit going on and feel like they're really in the world is nice and makes me care about these locations beyond the general story beats within them. Most cities don't really feel like cities in a lot of JRPGs, they're just stages for plot and drama to occur that I only remotely give a shit about.
They've been doing that with the last 3 or 4 games.. and look how that has turned out.. Going even more all-in on western hack and slash/FPC is the last thing they should be doing.
Devil May Cry is a Japanese game that arguably invented what we consider "hack and slash" as we know it, and that is a clear inspiration of some sort for many of SE's attempts at an action combat system. DMC is also good, unlike many crappy hack and slash games.
So I'll take it if they can actually make it good because if you're in the mood for it and it is made well DMC-like gameplay is a good time. KH2FM and the Remind bosses for KH3 (because the rest of that game blows ass) has shown you can do both within an RPG framework, and its fun. Just don't make it like FF15 where you can potion spam through everything and have all your moves have what feels like a million frames of end lag on unstaggerable enemies to show off your particle effects.
Action RPGs aren't bad inherently, but SE is super inconsistent about making a good combat system with good bosses. Even within KH games that are actually good they're inconsistent. I'd like a solid stream of effective challenging bosses within an action RPG that doesn't involve Souls levels of limited mobility as KH bosses are a lot of fun when they're designed by a human and not some kind of spiteful lazy asshole who thinks having bosses get random pot shots at you when you try to hit them while they're standing still is good challenging boss design.
So will FF16 be good KH gameplay or bad KH gameplay? That is the question and I can't tell from the footage that has been shown which we got here.
