The Square Enix Griefing Thread

Seems more like a strike against it than anything.
Once you realize that Yahweh and the Law faction are literally just stand ins for the horrible, conformist shitshow that is modern Japanese society, it all makes sense. For why they use Judeo-Christianity as the stand in for that, rather than their own gods? Beats the hell out of me.

>kill a stand in for God
>not actually God Himself

SMT wins again.
Bad news, the devs have historically claimed that isn't the Christian God or the ultimate evil.

Which is actually a strike against it because they are blatant liars.

This has been the cope defense of terrible Nip storytelling for like 30 years now.
This man is correct, but doesn't know exactly how correct they are.

A lot of weeaboos, for lack of a better word, basically treat Japanese auteurs like infallible gods. Truth is, they simply don't care about the same things the fans do and will happily make it up as they go along, even during interviews.

The censors disagree.

Even if you don't think cleavage is a big deal you shouldn't let a bunch of transexual freaks decide what you're allowed to see and hear.
Meanwhile, they'll tell you to jerk off to trannies and ugly, manly She-Hulks whether or not they're fucking. They'll destroy your life if you speak out against Abby or any lbgt/trans revisions in shit like Guilty Gear.

Poor dubbing is the only thing that stopped a story about Mickey Mouse and the kid from the Sixth Sense from being an epic for the ages that makes Chaucer, Shakespeare, and Tolkien look like amateurs.
Oh no kh is dubbed just right. Honestly 13s dub/localization is ok in the basic sense, it just screws up or straight up omits some of the background lore.

You want to talk unsalvageable type O is horrifically bad. I cannot and will not defend that abomination in anything other then subs
I didn’t even like the plot of type 0, and it certainly wasn’t fun to play.
The decision to convey the plot through teenagers and a documentary style narrative really hurt it. When you look past it, there's actually a pretty good dark story about a world where life is cheap when nobody can remember their loss.

The manga prequel ice reaper is excellent and honestly should have been the main plot.

Lot more gore and likeable main characters. I don't hate class zero ( in subs) but they are basically God children that aren't even technically the main characters that drive the plot.

Because Japs look at Christian mythos the same way we look at Shinto mythos. Cool shit for a video game.

Most variations of prominent final bosses in FF are actually a mixture of Lucifer/Satan. I guarantee you that Normura used Alexandre Cabrranel's painting "The Fallen Angel" as inspiration for his revamped design of the character in the 2000's with Kingdom Hearts and Advent Children, especially with the loose black feathers and thought to himself "Hey, I can barely see the wing on the right...what if Sephiroth only had one wing for an unexplained reason? That would be cool."

It's just about the safest target fiction can choose.
Shin Megami Tensei isn't even a very good series, anyway. It's Pokemon for Hot Topic's core demographic, but with a lot more grinding that it tries to pass off as difficulty. I gave SMT4 a fair shot and eventually made it to Tokyo, which was supposed to be a big part of the game, but by then I was so fucking bored and fed up with it that I shelved it for good.

I really should get around to reselling my copy someday. I know it's worth a good amount of money.

In the 90's?
Less so but it's always been a pretty safe target in modern times.

I haven't played any except the DS one briefly. The most interesting thing about the series is that it spawned the Featuring Dante from Devil May Cry meme lol

I get what you're saying, but this was 1992 and I definitely remember it being a no-no back then. Hell, in 1987 the National Endowment for the Arts got a budget cut over Piss Christ, which was amusing since the art piece itself was supposedly a condemnation of society's commercialization and cheapening of God. I digress, though, the point was it was still very volatile at the time. Maybe not in Japan, but certainly in the West.

Either way, we can both agree that Final Fantasy were the bigger pussies, right? Although, having learned what @The Demon Pimp of Razgriz and @X Prime said, they're pretty close at this point.

I think you guys are taking "edgy Japanese series with biblical references" a bit too seriously.
I mean, this is also the series with the giant screaming penis monster and Beetlejuice.

It's a bit like Earthbound in that it's a very traditional RPG framework (this time Wizardry instead of Dragon Quest) with strong theming bolted on.

Atlus were far more technically competent than Ape (barring Satoru Iwata) but the game has far more bullshit to compensate and the Aeon Genesis translation is really scuffed.

I'm mostly talking about the SNES ones though so YMMV with the modern ones.

Also the sneed from MatPat informing Pokemon fans about a game series for adults they might enjoy was legendary.
