The Suicide Squad - unnecessary white male director gets second chance

Why are you bringing up it being woke? I don't think anyone was expecting it to be based on the GOTG movies also not being woke.
Because of Harley Quinn and because so many movies are sullied with it these days. HQ in the comics is about as obnoxiously woke as it gets in recent years. the Harley Quinn cartoon skirted the edge of it for about two seasons before finally succumbing at the end and the previous White male show runner has been removed in favour of these two

and other writers hired to make the writing more "diverse". And though I never saw it, I gathered from many that Birds of Prey was (a) pretty much entirely taken over by Harley Quinn and (b) a tiresome wokefest. So I wanted to highlight that I found this movie neither of those things.

They clearly hired James Gunn to do his thing and have little to no studio interference.

It's a Hollywood movie made after 2015 which makes it a fair question, even if it's not the case here.
Besides Marvel starting to go kinda woke just now, capeshit hasn't been woke.

I saw this tonight. It was decent. Pretty much Guardians of the Galaxy with DC characters and lots of blood, guts, and swearing. I was surprised that Harley Quinn is pretty superfluous to the plot, I wonder if changing Deadshot into Bloodsport has anything to do with it. Also surprised that Boomerang died in the very beginning and that Rick Flagg died in the end, though he does so in the comics, too, but then is revealed to be alive later on. I wonder if they'll do the same.

What they did with Amanda Waller towards the end hurts the character and really devalues her as a threat. My only other complaint of note is that, along with Harley, some of the characters feel pointless. Plot could've played out exactly the same if the squad were just Flagg, Bloodsport, Peacemaker, and Rat-Catcher.

It was a really weak attempt at "look at who is going to die, nobody is safe!!!" stake raising. If it hadn't been all the superfluous characters being thrown out they'd have a point.

Kill off Harley Quinn, that'd make the audience sit up and take it seriously.

Just watched it

It's pretty enjoyable with a good amount of character work. I thought it was pretty funny that
the A-Team get's obliterated in the first 5 minutes as part of Waller's plan
, so I didn't have any issues with that. In general i have very little against it besides a lot of "guy with a gun running in the direction of opponent to shoot point blank" and what they did to Waller in the final act.

Bloodsport is very clearly a "We couldn't get Will Smith" stand in, but they give him enough quirks that he feels like hiw own character. Cena was much better in this than he was in F9. Harley was actually used well and King Shark is a shark

That Ratcatcher 2 girl's pretty good, hope they keep her around, I'd watch a sequel.

It's actually pretty good. It seemed like they saved the best for the movie and dumped the crap into the trailer (either that or heavily re-worked it with all the free time Covid provided them).

The first team getting wiped out was fun. I clapped when Captain Boomerang was killed because I hated that character and I hate that actor. I was originally miffed he was back like "Really? Why? Who are the retards who like this character? He sucks." I legitimately clapped when he died in the first 10 minutes. Fuck Captain Boomerang and fuck Jai Courtney.

Just finished watching it, I'd say it is better than the first one.

Doesn't take itself seriously and the moments where it tries to be serious is done without going over the top as in the first one.

Casting seems more solid and the characters do seem to have some depth to their personalities rather than the performances being phoned in, probably because there is more engagement by the director.

Wouldn't watch it again, but gave me something to watch while I ate.

Does the "Girl saves the day" scene has become mandatory in movies lately? Even the new Venom 2 trailer shows a black woman "super" screaming, with sound being the symbiotes weakness it doesn't take a scientist to figure out where this is going.

Also, having a mandatory black woman in the cast seems like a neat way to fill out two token requirements for the price of one.

You could make the argument that it is a remake. It follows the beats of the first movie almost verbatim. We even get a scene of them hanging out and drinking and bonding. Then there's the climax fighting the big bad at the end.

I have to admit I hardly knew anything about Amanda Waller outside of Justice League Unlimited. But I was actually really happy that she got smacked in the head for being a heartless bitch.

Overall I'm happy with how this movie turned out, it might not have the same charm Guardians of the Galaxy did but this was going for an R-Rated Action film. I really hope DC just decides to be the edgelord alternative to the MCU.

Just finished it

For the record, I loved it, but I do have one problem with the film.
It feels like its kind of cramming as much as it could into 2+ hours. And While for the most part it worked, I feel like some moments like when Ratcatcher 2 and Bloodsport are on the bus, it gave us just that moment for Bloodsport to have a connection with Ratcatcher, I felt like it could have been fleshed out better with a bit longer of a running time.

It also feels like its going on a tiny bit too fast
but for that last part I didn't mind as much because I was having a great time, smiling the whole way through (something that almost never happens when I watch Blockbuster movies)

I give it somewhere between a B+ and A-.

I don't think Gunn has yet to direct a bad film. His best is still Super. I liked his take on Suicide Squad but the big problem for me is that it follows pretty much the same exact plot points as the David Ayer film. That and it felt very bloated especially the confrontation with the big bad at the end.

8/10 For me.

8/10 as well; agreed with Super as well.

Harley Quinn is pretty superfluous to the plot
She always was, I guess they need to include her for marketing or fan-service reasons (she clearly can't carry her own movie after all), but they really struggle to find things for her to do so she gets a little B-plot and jumps into the eye of the Starro

Plot could've played out exactly the same if the squad were just Flagg, Bloodsport, Peacemaker, and Rat-Catcher.
But then we wouldn't have had the in medias opening on the beach. So all for the spectacle... a pathetic and sad spectacle but that's ok because it was suppose to be that way... I mean they had TDK there.

Her plot armour is pretty thick this time, or maybe not... it's only really the part where she survives a helicopter falling on her and that's more of a bait and switch the rest of the time it's no more than anything the other character are also surviving.

You could make the argument that it is a remake. It follows the beats of the first movie almost verbatim. We even get a scene of them hanging out and drinking and bonding. Then there's the climax fighting the big bad at the end.
Pretty sure that's just the formula for team based capeshit.
They don't get along at first, they have a bonding moment, then they fight the big bad.

I was fine with that, I just meant like King Shark and Polkadot Man plays no significant role and are of no real use during the mission. Just one or two scenes where something comes up that only they can overcome or they provide help at a critical point would've been fine. Polkadot at least causes the bombs to explode and dies during the final battle, making it a bit more tense, but King Shark really has no role to play at all.

i just watched and enjoyed it.
id watch a movie about rat girl, amanda waller or whatever getting killed and harley quinn interacting with michael keaton batman

I thought it was alright, pretty good disposable entertainment. It probably galled some of the people behind the movie, but the white guy steals the show again. John Cena was great. Harley's annoyance factor was ratcheted down a little, which was merciful. Amanda Waller plays such a one-note character. They miss opportunities to give her glimpses of humanity and instead it's unrelenting "badass black chick". Idris Elba was decent as the straight man, but a bit boring at times. Everything and everyone else was fine.

Loved to see Peter Capaldi getting a nice role. The right Doctor Who at the wrong time, always felt bad for that guy.

Loved the "Who's Milton" scene, too.
