Oh wow I didn’t know there was an actual thread for this. I got into Sumo like 6 months ago and it seems it was the perfect time to catch Aonishiki’s ascent. Really hope he can pull off Yokozuna this basho.
You came in at the perfect time, dude. I feel like we're in one of the best sumo eras ever, and it's about to get better. We really had some depressing sumo there for a while after Hakuho retired.

I am absolutely worried about Onosato. He looked panicked as soon as he locked up with Atamifuji last night. I really hope he isn't injured too badly.

He fights Fujinokawa, who is significantly smaller than him, but Fujinokawa is also insanely powerful and fights like a pitbull. I think how he fights in this matchup; if he doesn’t win quickly and decisively, we will know definitively that he is fighting badly hurt.

Aonishiki bros I don't feel so good
Its fine, as I have said before I have been waiting for the wheels to fall off this run I guess they finally have. He will be the better for it, spending a year with highest ranks will be better for his sumo as he continues to develop his skills. Now if you could please put a Takayasu or Hoshoryu yusho in the bag no one needs to get hurt!

Kirishima is looking insanely good right now.

I want:
-Kirishima win
or
-Hoshoryu win
-A playoff between them

Hoshoryu winning would be his first as a Yokozuna (finally) and Kirishima still gets Ozeki. both my favs get a good ending. I'd be happy with Kirishima winning, but even the performance he's shown lately shows he returned to form. Maybe he won't be the first Mongolian to reach Ozeki without reaching Yokozuna.

Takayasu always crumples in week 2 so I wasn't expecting anything but it would be nice to see him do well.

Aonishiki was always fast and stable, but this tournament he's seemed more frantic than fast. I wonder if nerves finally caught up to him when this was such a huge chance for him.

Last two days were disappointing in multiple ways, but Kirishima is back. Third guy ever to lose Ozeki, fail the Sekiwake 10 win recovery and then get back to Ozeki later. I couldn't tell if he was holding back tears, just being awkward or both during the interview but I'm happy for him!

Hakkaku verbally beat the shit out of Hoshoryu and I almost feel it's a bit *too* harsh when he ended on 11-4.

The Aonishiki collapse reeks of secret injury but I guess we won't really know unless they decide to divulge the info.

Could be, but I didn't think he moved any different. He just seemed frantic to me, like he was panicking trying to think of what to do as "don't lose don't lose don't lose don't lose don't lose" is going through his head.
In one of his bouts this basho what looked like a stone rolled off the tawara where his foot had been. On pause it seemed to be a bandage that had been around his foot or toe. I think the odds of him having a broken big toe are pretty high, and it lines up with the way he was losing his bouts.

I don't think I've seen any news or announcements about it though so purely my speculation.

I was hoping for a Hoshoryu vs Aonishiki playoff, Hosh wins but Ao gets promoted anyway, but alas. At least lightning-manlet Fujinokawa is holding on to dear life at Maegashira top.
