I didn't pay much attention to the Tobi allegations, the scandals rarely interest me much. Besides, Oshoma got away scot-free from *much* worse allegations, I don't expect the flying monkey himself to feel any repercussions.

Onosato getting the rope by the July basho, then? Would need to go 12-3 in May.

what are the chances ramadan is the reason kinbozan did so poorly this basho compared to the last 2? would be funny if it was the reason

Surely got to get it by this point. He's got everything to be a Yokozuna and he's had his rough patch of tournaments now, so hopefully it'll come sooner rather than later.

Some notes from the tournament:
  • After five losses, Hoshoryu (the newly crowned Yokozuna) was absent from the last five days of the tournament. Apparently this was due to a neck sprain and right elbow injury, but either way it's the first time since 1986 that a Yokozuna has dropped out of the tournament on their first basho at the highest rank.
  • The juryo division tournament was won by Kusano who was a rookie of the division going into this tournament. The 23 year old broke records by being the first sumo wrestler to win his first ten bouts consecutively in the Juryo divison as a rookie and was the first rikishi in 48 years (and only the third in history) to clinch the Juryo title with twelve consecutive wins. He'd finish the tournament with a record of 14-1, losing his only bout on the thirteenth day.
  • Despite leading for most of the basho, Takayasu fell short after a loss on Day 14 (which would have had him clinch the title) and went into a Play-off on Day 15 with Onosato where the latter won. This is his ninth time as runner-up in a tournament, having yet to win a yusho.
  • Ozeki Onosato won the Makuuchi division yusho with a 12-3 record, and doing so puts him in contention for a possible Yokozuna promotion if the May tournament goes well for him.
  • Ozeki Kotozakura finished the tournament with an 8-7 record, having struggled at times throughout the basho.
  • Tokihayate, who came into the tournament at rank M18 after struggling in the last two tournaments and was on the brink of being demoted, finished the tournament with a 10-5 record and getting his first kachi-koshi record.
  • Tamawashi, the oldest competitor in the Makuuchi divison at age 40, finished the tournament with a record of 10-5, continuing his run of three kachi-koshi tournament records.
  • Aonishiki, the 21 year old Ukranian who was competing in his first top division tournament, finished the basho on his 21st birthday with a record of 11-4 along with a Fighting Spirit prize.
  • Former top division champion and former Ozeki Mitakeumi, who is currently ranked M17, suffered a 6-9 losing record and may be looking at a possible demotion to the Juryo division.
Bit of a weird thing to note, but Shishi (the other Ukrainian rikishi who finished the tournament with a 9-6 record), according to Murray Johnson he was apparently told off midway through the tournament for the way he prepares for his tachi-ai (his initial charge). He's been doing this strange preparation where he does motions with his hands while his arms are extended and I'm guessing the JSA didn't like it so he stopped doing it so much for the rest of the tournament:

@Officer Barbrady Worth noting too that Roga, of Futagoyama-beya fame bounced back this basho with an 11-4 in Juryo, and will find himself in Makuuchi again. Nabatame, probably the most popular Futagoyama-beya rikishi (despite the likes of Chris Sumo trying to spread retarded drama around him) performed considerably worse in Juryo with a score of 3-8-4, mainly hampered by injuries.

There were reports in Japan that Nabatame had been contacting an under-18 year-old and having sexually charged conversations. Chris of course, who loves to spread drama regardless of its veracity alluded to this in a recent video. The issue is that it happened years ago, and Nabatame was the same age as the girl at the time. So who fucking cares.

Started out as a clown basho but I think it ended pretty decent. I wanted Takayasu to win but at least he didn't choke, he was just outplayed. Onosato resisting that throw at the tawara was a showing of immense strength.

Here are a few of my favorite funny bouts of this tournament:

Bonus:

(I remember someone complaining about something to do with videos in posts on KF but I can't remember what it was about. Please remind me if I committed a sin here.)

Ura nonchalantly conking Onosato on the head as he rolled off is peak sumo. :really:

I've heard some users ask for them to be hidden behind spoiler tags so it doesn't clutter a thread with loading media, but I don't mind it.

It's probably hard to find a job after an unsucessful Sumo career. They are morbidly obese, have health problems and no degree. Well, they could open a restaurant tho.
You'd be surprised how many rikishi lose their body fat immediately after retirement. It's a different kind of fat that they build through their regimen, not sure if that makes it easier. Takanohana is the best example, nearly halved his weight within 2 years of retirement.

You see a lot of cope that rikishi aren't fat that it's all muscle under there! When clearly some are disgustingly fat see Orora. However most are actually built like Olympic powerlifters who have the same types of bodies with big heavy guts. I assume because they are using their bodies in similar ways, i.e. pushing thrusting.

The mawashi does end up pushing their gut out beyond what their stomach normally looks like, but it's pretty obvious a lot of rikishi are also just fat by default with their diet.
