The Sumo Thread - HAKKEYOI!!!

  • 🐕 I am attempting to get the site runnning as fast as possible. If you are experiencing slow page load times, please report it.
I expected something like that. The Ryuden hate is so fucking reddit it hurts. Yeah, I get it, he cheated on his wife. That sucks. I don't care, you don't care either, get over it. Every single sumospiffy video is tainted with it too.

Fucking reddit.
I've noticed they have a massive hate boner for Abi too. He had a few issues with the JSA and offered to resign but they refused. But also the people on reddit just hate his tsuki-oshi slap/push fighting technique too.

The run-ins with the JSA were so mild too. A dumb prank with Wakamotoharu being posted to social media and the JSA make them both apologise for it and enact social media policies. Then the trips to bars during COVID where Abi offered to give up his career for forgiveness but they said no. He's since apologised profusely for it, cried during his next tournament win about it, but five years on and reddit still love casting him as a villain for it.

Even his fighting style isn't as bad as reddit makes it out to be. Nobody batted an eyelid when the likes of Takakeisho and Tamayasu used the same fighting style but because it's Abi it's suddenly so unprofessional and unsportsmanlike. Same with anytime he tries a henka and reddit users are disgusted by him for it. I remember Takakeisho doing it to Atamifuji in a play-off (where Atamifuji was a rookie and was so close to clinching the yusho) and reddit was absolutely fine with that henka since it wasn't Abi doing it.

To listen to them, Ryuden got the coat hanger out himself and aborted the baby he conceived with his mistress. All of those guys are pro-choice until it gives them the opportunity to form a narrative against someone they already don't like.

Gotta admit, my group enjoys hating on him too. He had a while of doing a LOT of henka, almost as much as Chiyoshoma, so we're still chanting "fuckyouabifuckyouabifuckyouabi" any time he loses. It's fun to have a villain, but we don't HATE him.

Some tabloids in Japan are reporting that Hakuho has allegedly tendered his resignation to the JSA. Nothing from any reputable sources, yet.
Hakuho has indeed resigned from the JSA and intends to open up a rival international sumo league called "Sumo"

June 3, 2025
On the 2nd, the Japan Sumo Association announced that former Yokozuna Hakuho, who has the most championships in the history of sumo wrestling with 45 victories, will retire from the association on the 9th. The resignation was approved at an extraordinary board meeting held on the same day at the Ryogoku Kokugikan in Tokyo. After his retirement, the stablemaster will aim to launch an international sumo competition organization based in Japan and the United States in order to fulfill his dream of promoting sumo worldwide, according to a source close to the association.

The great Yokozuna, who won 45 championships, the most in history, is saying goodbye to the sumo world. Miyagino Oyakata, who retired from active competition in September 2021, moved to the Isegahama stable with his disciples in April last year after his stable was closed due to a violence scandal involving former Makuuchi wrestler Hokuseiho. However, more than a year had passed and the stable had not reopened, so he decided to resign from the association. His notice of retirement was submitted to the extraordinary board of directors on the same day, and was to be accepted on the 9th.

According to sources, he plans to use his retirement as an opportunity to launch an international organization based in Japan and the United States. Miyagino Oyakata, who came to Japan from Mongolia at the age of 15 and entered the sumo world, has expressed his gratitude for Japan's national sport, saying, "I've been able to survive because of sumo wrestling," and has previously said, "I want many people overseas to know the charm of sumo." He also has a track record of working to expand the base of sumo, such as by hosting the world junior sumo tournament "Hakuho Cup" during his active career.

The plan is to run a professional league for "SUMO," which is different from the traditional culture of sumo wrestling, and according to sources, several international companies with which he has had connections from his active days are likely to become sponsors.

Miyagino's father, Munkhbat, was a silver medalist in wrestling at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics, and he has previously said that he would like sumo to be an Olympic sport, and it appears he will be actively working to have sumo included as an Olympic sport.

The master is currently in Mongolia to participate in the unveiling ceremony of his father's bronze statue on the 3rd, and will return to Japan within this week. He will hold a press conference in Tokyo on the 9th to report on his future plans.

I can't seem to find the article talking about him wanting to set up a new Sumo league, but I'd recommend trying to translate the article in DeepL instead. It seems to translate Japanese a lot better than Google does.

i think the only way this could succeed for hakuho is if he keeps a good portion of the sports traditions alive. there should absolutely be added safety measures and more impact on wrestler health, but if there isnt the little ceremonies, the prematch warmups, or the wrestler initiated tachiai, i just dont think it will have as much intrigue as regular sumo does now. i also think the only way this could work is if they remove the stable aspect. unless hakuho has some big sponsorships willing to build international stables, and then fly the wrestlers to wherever the tournaments are taking place, i think the stables wont be there, and that takes away a lot of i feel makes sumo as enduring as it is. im intrigued, but call me cynical this seems like a bit of a cashgrab. "you wont let me change sumo? well im going to go make my OWN sumo, but with blackjack and hookers!"

Yeah, I'm pretty sure the only things that would work in the United States would be either a UFC-style structure with big fight purses, or a WWE-style roster where there is a structured pay scale. I do think sumo would perform well in the US if it was marketed right.

I love Hakuho, and wish him success, but no doubt it'll ultimately end up being bankrolled by the Saudis/held in Riyadh like every other fucking minor sport/breakaway division.

Ideally, it would be a truly global sport and hold at least one tournament in North America and one in Europe per year, with basho being held in even months.

There's certainly a chance for it but he'd have to thread the needle just right like you said. It's something that a lot of people know about but just dismiss it as "lmao fat guys in diapers" But I think there's probably some way to changing people's opinions on it.

The new rankings have been announced for July with some interesting changes.
  • As we know, it'll be the first Yokozuna pairing in four years as Hoshoryu and Onosato both take the top rank.
  • Wakatakakage has been promoted to Sekiwake rank following a good showing in the last tournament. It's actually the third time in Sumo history that a rikishi has fallen from that rank to below Juryo and then returned to that rank (the other two being Terunofuji and Kotokaze).
  • Oshoma has been promoted to Komusubi rank following a good showing in May at rank M6. The big jump in rankings is likely down to the poor results of those above him in the last basho.
  • Ukrainian Aonishiki, who has had four straight double-digital wins in tournaments, has jumped from M9 to M1.
  • There's been five promotions from Juryo to the top division, including Kusano (who only joined professional sumo last year), Mitakeumi (who was demoted to Juryo for the last tournament) and Tobizaru's elder brother Hidenoumi (who was suspended in January 2022 by the JSA for illegal gambling).

💕Ura💕 has dropped to M9 with back to back to back losing records he is doing well to hold on. Hopefully he gets a winning record this basho. M1 for Aonishiki is well deserved he is fabulous to watch hopefully for another great showing from him.

I'm excited for a double Yokozuna tournament. Praying they both perform at Yokozuna level. Aonishiki is likely to meet both of them which is another point of excitement for me. 2025 continues to look like a banger year for sumo.

Hidenoumi (who was suspended in January 2022 by the JSA for illegal gambling).
Oh shit, I missed that part entirely when it happened. I just forgot about him and assumed he had performed badly.

Man Hoshoryu is having a rough go of it so far this basho. Hard to be upset about Aonishiki chalking up a win but it's not good to see Hosh fall off, here's hoping he pulls it back.

Hosh is out with a broken big toe. That sucks, first basho with two Yokozuna in years and it's not gonna culminate with them meeting in the ring.
