Juryo all bouts - Day 11

Makuuchi

I'm worried about Hakuho. Since his injury he's lost steam. I like him a lot, damn it. He did win very well today though and I was genuinely pleased to see the fire of the fight back in him. I don't think the injury was that bad, but I think it's thrown his balance off mentally.

Pleased Endo won as well, he's actually doing much better than he had at previous basho. His strength seems to have improved.
Oh and Asanoyama did damn well today, which was really awesome to see.

Hakuho announcing his plans to retire this year kind of challenged everyone to step their game up. Endo, Asanoyama, and Yutakayama are a few I think are going to respond the best to it. Takakeisho is pretty much there, all he needs to do is secure the trophy two times or post very good scores. I'd really like to see Enho and Terutsuyoshi make it to Komusubi by the end of the year.

Takakeisho was lucky he won yesterday against Ryuden. He was close to being kadoban'd out of there.
He's against Kakuryu today so...

Enho is incredible. I'm really hoping he can use his size for good. Being mentored by Hakuho is an incredible thing, so I think he has a good future.

lol who even watches sumo these days except for oldfags

Absorb culture like a sponge or else it will be taken away and fucked like a comfort wife, child.

After seeing what became of Takayasu and Tochinoshin, I was naturally worried about Takakeisho. He needs to post up better at the tachi ai and can't let Kakuryu get an outside right grip.

Enho's speed is his greatest advantage along with how low he can get. His match against Abi in the last tournament was the first time I'd ever seen anything like that, haha.

Makuuchi - Day 15

Well, Hakuho did it again. Takakeisho is kadoban which means he will be demoted unless he gets 10 wins in May. Two months until then.

I'm gonna necro this because I got into sumo about a year ago and just thought to check for a thread here.
Same favourites as OP with an addition of Wakatakakage (even before his amazing win this march, I promise).

Since this is such a powerful necro, it's funny to see the worries about Hakuho knowing he completely dominates the July 2021 tournament.

I don't know much about how rankings really work, but I feel like Mitakeumi could make it to Yokozuna, and with Kotonowaka being so young and already performing really well I could see him climb all the way there one day as well.

Here's one of my favourite moments from March 2022, what a Chad tochitsuyoshi.png

continuing with tradition of this thread having a reply every 2 years to highlight the recent win of Takerufuji
why does this need to be highlighted? a few reasons
Takerufiju debuted in grand sumo in september of 2022 at the rank of Jonokuchi #15 west.
in the 9 basho (tournaments) hes fought in hes never lost more than 2 of his matches.
in january of 2024 he rose up to juyro for the first time at the rank of Juryo #10 east, and won his debut juyro basho with a score of 13-2.
in march of 2024 he rose up to makuuchi for the first time at the rank of Maegashira #17 east, and won his debut makuuchi basho with a score of 13-2 AGAIN.
This marks the first time in 110 YEARS that a wrestler has won both juryo and makuuchi debut tournaments, and the second time ever being done overall.
not only that but on day 14 of this basho he seriously twisted his ankle, came back injured on day 15 and won agaisnt a serious opponent in Gonoyama who went 10-5.
if your new to the sport, or know someone whos looking to get into sumo, i reccomend telling them to watch takerufuji, i can very easily see him becoming ozeki, if not yokozuna

Does this mean they might finally see another Japanese Yokozuna?
Was hoping Takakeisho would make it but it just seems like his body type is too extreme and style not able to be sustained at the highest level.

Is the sport still being dominated by Mongols? Haven't watched in years.

there are some dominant mongols (hoshoryu, terunofuji when hes up to it, kirishima sometimes) but the meteoric rise of japanese rikishi like takerufuji, onosato, atamifuji, gonoyama, and the promotion to ozeki of kotonowaka (now kotozakura), we may see a period of japanese dominance over the sport again

Would like to breathe a little life into this thread and to report that it looks like all sumo restreams are being taken down from twitch and youtube, with the exception of intrusive commentary streamers who either blare annoying music over the top of the stream, or talk about bullshit I don't care about.

I have now joined the private torrent tracker site JPTV in order to directly get the content I enjoy, was hoping to learn of any other methods of watching outside of Japan now (other than live through abema on a VPN). In case anyone is interested in joining JPTV, registrations are currently open and there's currently 2 sumo torrents being uploaded every day of NHK's coverage of the May tournament, one is the final 90% of the Juryo Division (It seems the recording starts after a commercial break of some sort so likely due to some error in automation) and is about 5gb and the second is of the whole of the Makuuchi Division and is about 14gb; JPTV requires you to have a seedtime of 7days per torrent so make sure you have a lot of storage space if you want to go that route.

Don't want this to just be a post of me complaining, so here's a clip I saved from yesterday's (May17th) match of Mitakeumi v Ura.
edit: looks like my video uploads aren't working

The video I was trying to upload earlier...
@ the moderator who ends up checking my report for the video upload not working, my apologies, just realised I need to attach the video as a file before I can insert it into the post

I saw sumo in Japan and it was great. You gotta get your tickets well in advanced but I think buysumotickets is the foreigner friendly ticket seller. They don't gouge you on drinks even (at least in Tokyo) unlike they do at baseball. I got some matches recorded from September but they probably aren't great quality for an upload

Sumo bros, the sumo starts again on Sunday

Kiho came back for one match last tournament and is now using the shikona ‘Kawazoe’

Looking forward to see how he fares this tournament

Wakatakakage is back in the top division again so I'm happy.

His bouts are always fun to watch.
I was a bit miffed with his final match last tournament; where he performed a henka, seemed very unsportsmanlike for the match to decide the juryo rank winner
That said, both Juryo and Top division look like they're going to be pretty stacked, looking forward to Takerufuji try to make his way back to top division if he's not still out due to his injury.
