I've updated FanControl and Windows Defender decided to do it's thing again and kill it's driver. However there's one interesting thing to note:
View attachment 7898017View attachment 7898022
Microsoft has changed the definition of the detection to "VulnerableDriver:WinNT/Winring0.G". Previously it would be detected under a much more threatening name which caused many people to be alarmed about their computers being compromised, but this is much more straightforward and by looking it up people will quickly learn what's the big issue. So, good on ya Microsoft, at least for this one thing.
FanControl has a legitimate vulnerability. I can’t fault Microsoft for this.

I am fully aware of WinRing0, but the first time this was happening en masse it was a generic rootkit detection which looked very threatening, and now they've corrected it to be more descriptive.

It's sure a damn shame that Microsoft didn't came up with an open API to safely and directly communicate with hardware to control RGB lights, fan speeds and monitor parameters without having to resort to a driver that is a ring 0 rootkit by design.

The only reason I still use Windows is for gaming. Once gaming on Linux improves, I'm out.
Linux is within 5-10% performance difference than Windows with gaming. I don't play online games that require anti-cheat, so Linux gaming works for a lot of people, especially since the Steamdeck came around.

I keep forgetting that some games have rootkits built in that prevent them from running on Linux. But i pretty much exclusively buy older games through steam and the new stuff i do get on occasion seem to be genres that never bother with the extreme drm.

God I despise windows 11 [ utility ], I don't understand how they fucked up something that just worked in windows 10 and prior (hell, it was fine in some earlier versions of windows 11 too, now the [ related utility ] unnecessarily hogs resources for some reason).

You really could just play Mad Libs with Windows 11.

Windows 10 EOL is coming up. Linux is unusable shit with power management issues and Windows 11 is jeet cancer. Should I just save myself the trouble and commit suicide?

ouch, right in the linuxfag wound they love to ignore.
The one they love to ignore is the fact their OS isn't comparable with the vast majority of programs people use to do their work.
Need to sign Documents or forms with fields for people to fill out? There really isn't a decent PDF editor for Linux and Acrobat Standard/Pro doesn't function very well (if at all) under the OS.
GIMP is a joke and Krita isn't much better. There are tons of graphical editing programs for Mac and PC right now. Other people have gotten the Creative Suite versions of photoshop to work supposedly
Inkscape is just a poor man's adobe illustrator.
FreeCAD can't compete with AutoCAD or Microstation.
Using mods for video games can be difficult under linux as well. Unfortunately Mods are a major plus that PCs have over consoles.

The list goes on but, unfortunately. I want to see Linux as a -real- competitor to windows. Bad things happen when monopolies are left to fester.

Depending on what you're using it for, Linux isnt so bad. I switched all of my old laptops over to linux mint so wont have to worry abut windows updates on those and hopefully they will last a bit longer since it's a less bloated OS.

Ironically most normies and old people would probably be fine using linux since to them computers are just for using the web browser anyway, as long as they can access and use youtube/facebook/instagram/email they are set yet these people make up the majority of Windows users.

People who actually need use of certain specific programs often times require windows.

‘B-but you can use these command line tools and set up a LAMP stack to process these things for you!’

best it can be done is having mac as a competitor and mac isn't exactly game friendly because why would you play games on your apple product? what are you? a minimum-wage worker or something?

log off the farms, jeff bezos.

My newest annoyance with Windows is a strange bit of interaction between the taskbar and the photo viewer. Since I have an OLED, I configure the taskbar to hide itself in order to minimize risk of burn-in. This works fine... except when I have something open in the photo viewer. Specifically when I move between photos inside the viewer itself with the arrow keys. Once I do that, the taskbar becomes completely unresponsive and I have to hit the Windows key to get it to show back up (and even then, it only shows up on my primary monitor). The problem also usually completely disappears once I close the photo viewer.

I know there's alternative photo viewers that work better and are still integrated well with explorer so I might switch to one of those.

Is the photo viewer maximized? Some programs block the taskbar from popping up when maximized and the default windows 11 photo viewer is currently one of them for some reason.

Anyway you probably should switch regardless (or try getting the original photo viewer back) because of how insanely laggy and bloated it is, it opened files so slowly that I got rid of it and just got nomacs instead, works fine

You've been living with computers too long. You don't understand normies.

My parents are the only people I trust to deal with Linux, and they're an odd intersection of analytic, tech-aware, requiring browser-only, and cheapskates, so they get some of their old laptops refurbed and are willing and capable to deal with it.

For everyone else I've encountered over 60 for whom tech isn't their job or hobby, trying to accustom them to W11's minor interface changes is like waterboarding, but introducing them to Linux distro eccentricities is like forced drowning. The average tech-illiterate normie views dealing with an OS like some combination of doing paperwork, performing a bomb defusing, and rooting around in a basketful of vipers. Their interactions with an OS are more akin to rituals than any nuanced attempt at understanding that OS's functions, and they want to learn as few rituals as possible to get their shit done. Anything out-of-scope risks offending the Ruinous Powers, anything different is a new demon whose placation must be left to a skilled warlock (tech support), and any hint of a command line means "hacker," though the way they say it they might as well mean "necromancer."

Just think of how little most inept dilettante nerds like me really know about computers, take even that away, and replace it with superstition, learned helplessness, and gormlessness. They were taught in the Before Times (a brief period of neuroplasticity) how to command some of the weakest demons that inhabit Windows, and by God that's all they're ever going to be able to handle, if even that.

I know. I work with, assist, and despair over these people daily.
