Big brained idea. Kill Wordpad, then turn Notepad into Wordpad.
WordPad uses rich text format files for its rich text features. Nupad is using Markdown for tables and apparently bold, italic, lists, URLs, etc. If they are sane at all, they will have a toggle to display the plain text version.

Worst case scenario, you get a special text file with a cracked game release or whatever, and it looks messy if you open it with the old Notepad or another editor that doesn't detect and render the Markdown. Everything they are doing with Notepad is fine, as long as the application opens fast, and you can turn off or ignore the fancy features.

If the only need is that the application opens fast then why even make changes to the program that can detract from this at all. Who exactly is asking for Markdown syntax and Copilot in Notepad, functionality would have had to be missing from the program to justify Microsoft going out of their way to change it.at all. Unless this was a heavily requested feature I see no point to it.

Honestly, I don't like Windows' Notepad. As in the pre-11 one, though the 11 one is no better. It's way too barebones for me, I got spoiled by the likes of Notepad++ where it autoindents, syntax highlights and so on. Notepad3 would be my next best bet if I wanted a Notepad. It launches instantly, if you throw away all the translation files it sits just below 8MB in size, and it comes with all the QoL features you'd expect from a modern text editor. I know that Microsoft has a hard-on on touching up all the legacy bits of Windows whether people asked for it or not, but what they're doing with Notepad is not the way to go. They should be copying Notepad3's homework on what a modern Notepad should look like.

And again, I like Neovim more nowadays. Launches quickly, has all the modern features I want, and since it's Vim I can edit things faster.

What custom start menus do you all reccomend for windows 10? I would prefer something as similar to Windows 8's start screen as possible, but with the ability to hide UWP apps. That being said, I would prefer anything over Windows 10's current start menu.
Reason I'm asking is because I have wasted way too much time trying to do this and nothing that I have attempted has worked so far. I believe that altering something under either system32/config or system32/spp would remove it, however I'm too retarded to do all of that.

I just use Openshell for the classic menu look. Easy to read, not nested where you can't find anything.

they are doing it because of copilot tracking and logging shite, don't forget that jeets are retarded and only follow orders from saar, truly fucking annoying they do this retarded shit of trying to fix shit that isn't broken for gay reasons.
here's a picture of why i use notepad:
1764443655550.png
anything else i would use notepad++ because Wordpad is shit and notepad3 looks like it doesn't get the point of notepad, if i wanted line numbers and formatting icons rather than something simplistic i'd be using notepad++ and i won't have to worry about typing some random shit for fun on my notepad and seeing a shitty ad about it, it's about time burgers started parading the crucified corpses of whichever greedy fucks keep insisting for this gay shit to be the standard.

i kind of miss windows XP/7 start menu now that i have a big monitor because the more programs you had the menu would grow bigger but on windows 10 it's the same size and windows 11 is just basically a phone showing all the "apps" shit.
fuck, i miss windows xp now.

FWIW, I just turned it off.

Now the formatting bar at the top is gone and any formatting that had been in any open files is also gone (you get a warning).

I think WordPad is gone now, isn't it? It's not installed on my W11 and its passing is probably time. There's not much sense in Windows have two basic text editors so you get the new child of both to continue on. WordPad was a hold-over for when you wanted an actual word processor (old form) but didn't have Word. The vast, vast majority of people are going to want italics, bullet points, etc. For those that don't, they can install something else or turn it off like I did. Of the ways they could have formatting in Notepad, markdown makes the most sense to me. They're not going to invent their own format and shouldn't. I also very much appreciate the introduction of tabs to Notepad that came in a while back.

Just my take. I also use VSCode for a bunch of stuff but that's now exceeded Emacs for delusions of being an Operating System.

Notepad is a simple utility that has to be in the operating system but it's so simple I don't get either why MS needs to add formatting or why anyone would notice. Anyone with even a semi-frequent need to fuck around with plain text should be on something like Notepad++ or have joined a side in the forever-war between Vim/Emacs.

Midwit pajeet middle managers don't get promoted by keeping Notepad working and stable, they get promoted by adding Copilot support because it's what users crave, and all sorts of other useless crap that is half-assed by pajeets from the same shithole village in India.

Like any large company there are fake work projects to keep departments employed, like the new Office icons:

VSCode is pretty much the goat for the moment, until they enshittify, notepad is/should be simplistic and if you want extra support you get other stuff, wordpad existence seems like a cop out to me nowadays especially since google can open word files no problemo and libreoffice exists but since @Peaches the Wonder Cat said, "everyone" wants copilot integration on their system according to pooftah and rakesh therefore notepad is going to be enshittified and slapped AI datamining tracker shit because if you already have the change to markdown, might as well integrate stuff that gives some extra pocket money to please the investors once pajeet presents that shit to them and they get a nice bonus or a promotion since their gig at office icon rework doesn't pay as much as they should be paid like the bhramin tier indians that they are.

fucking jeets, man.

Pretty weird specs. An XT with a VGA and Adlib card doesn't feel like a hugely common configuration for the era. In particular, I don't think there would be many VGA games that would run on an XT.

Back in the day, my Win 3.1 was fucked up and for some retarded reason I decided to do a fresh install with 3.0. Major difference I can recall was the lack of true type fonts in 3.0.
Basically nothing runs on it. That’s a business machine. PC wasn’t relevant for gaming until AT era. There are some games but it’s all crappy ports.

I haven't been keeping up on this thread, but I need to replace the generic Bluetooth drivers that Windows 11 keeps installing (they did forced updates like 3 times last month). The AMD wizard doesn't do it, I hope AMD isn't planning on hiring jeets.

FWIW, TextEdit on MacOS has rich text and plain text modes and allows for tables. It's a complete piece of garbage nobody would want to use because of it but there it is. I'd guess the Jeet product manager got all his ideas from TextEdit.
Just my take. I also use VSCode for a bunch of stuff but that's now exceeded Emacs for delusions of being an Operating System.
VSCode is a fucking pig of a text editor, it's unacceptably slow and uses a ton of RAM to do basic text manipulations.

Of course that's because it's a gassed up Chromium window running a TypeScript web app to do plain text with line numbers, syntax highlighting, and other gay garbage on top.

Maybe. But I still maintain that in this day and age, most people will want basic text formatting and the cost of that specifically, is minimal. Markup support is easy and resource-cheap. Sure. my notepad.exe process is by itself now taking up 60MB but... okay. I shouldn't have checked Task Manager for this. I've shot down my own argument... :(

Well, it also has the foundations in it to do a Hell of a lot more than that as well. It's FAR more than a text editor. Sure, you can use it as one and for that it uses more resource that would be necessary. Same as if I drove a Ferrari to the corner shop. But it's a very capable tool. Suite of tools, really.

TypeScript is the straight-jacket that keeps Javascript from drawing on the walls and getting into the medicine cabinet. Do you want to live in an asylum? No. But the straightjacket is worthy of praise.

Also, the nature of VSCode does make it very easy for people to write plugins for it and build a large and useful ecosystem around it.

Microsoft finally admits almost all major Windows 11 core features are broken

Not holding my breath on this one but maybe this'll finally push Microsoft to pull their head out of their asses, take a step back and fix their shit. Admitting to the problem is already a major step forward to them.
No, because the features are all outgrowths of various teams run by insane jeet execs who need their MAUs bumped in order to justify their continued employment.

This isn't software that's designed for usability. The days of Microsoft engineers sitting down and actually using this thing and making changes based on what would make it more usable are long over. It exists to harvest data and shepherd users into various Microsoft service offerings.

Go check videos from the people who actually work on Windows UX - half of them are straight-up just using Macs at this point.

The only thing that's really going to turn things around is an ass-beating in the market and I don't know if it's even possible anymore due to Microsoft's size and breadth.

Wait, W11 has a different notepad? I've never migrated off of LTSC and I've never had any problem with 'jeetcode fucking up my Windows boot (Aside from 'jeet code for my GPU driver, which causes random BSODs at random)

Not that long ago Windows was 90% of desktop OS installs, now it's 70%.

Trouble is that Windows isn't their bread and butter any more, it's Azure and services generating MRR. With this outlook I genuinely do not think Windows will ever get better, even with further severe market share losses.
