The Worst Game Endings - Or How to Ruin Good Gameplay with Bad Writing (Spoilers, duh)

I thought PoE's story and ending were pretty good.
The first time I played PoE I was disappointed by the final bossfight - but it turned out that either I was too good at the game (I can't remember what difficulty I was playing on but it was somewhere in the middle) or it glitched out.

I saw in the final bossfight there was evil soul-crunching wizard dude and these two big statues. So I used some summoned creatures to keep the statues busy while the party proper whaled on him. Turns out I whaled on him harder than the game was expecting, because I killed him in about two rounds of combat. Cue credits.

I didn't find out till months later that what was supposed to happen is that he jumps into and possesses each of the statues in turn, forcing you to kill him 3 times in total, and he's got monster physical stats while in the statues rather than as a squishy wizard, so he can hit like a truck and take a hell of a lot of punishment as well as cast spells and shit. But somehow I alpha-struck him so hard he just gibbed before he got the chance to jump into the statues. Oops.

Yeah, the Irenicus fight was somewhat better planned out. PoE also has some godawful broken mechanics like every kind of effect used STR as the base stat.

I don't know if it's just me. While the game itself was fun in a lot of ways. I feel like Fallout 4 had a pretty unsatisfying ending no matter what group you pick.

Reactions: MachoMan
Hellblade Senua's Sacrifice. "Oh, did we mention that character is a skitzo? Yes? Oh, then you should've been expecting that none of this makes any sense." Gameplay wasn't good though.
God of War (2016). Turns out that Atreus is Loki and the Ragnarok has already begun, Cratos and boi walk towards new even greater adventures and... Fucking end credits. And I get this after disappointing fight with Baldur.

Every entry of the hitman trilogy has a debatably shitty ending

Hitman 1&2 end on cliffhangers. Hitman 1’s is diana agreeing to switch sides in order to get more information on 47’s origin. Hitman 2 has 47 regain his lost memories and remember he killed diana’s parents

Hitman 3’s ending was narratively satisfying with the option for 47 to either kill his target or for the first time do a dishonored style spare him but erase his memory with the same serum used on 47 which I found a clever way of tying up a story about choice and the consequences of being a contract killer but the actual level was a bad, linear corridor with no replyability

However all of those are only shitty because the team made stupid decisions. Havinng a linear end level is okay so long as you dont try to keep your marketing all hush about it, stupid decision 1. Stupid decision 2 was to have the story be this three game arc when it wouldve been better to make it somewhat disconnected so each installment actually ends before the next begins. Because if their financial situation went any different they wouldve been fucked and the story wouldve been unfinished. My real pick for worst ending ever i saved for last:

The hitman 2 dlc bridged the gaps between the second game and third but had a cutscene so incompetently made people thought a character had turned bad when he didnt

Context: your ally and 47’s brother subject 6/lucas grey are looking for these three leaders who are the third game’s starting targets. The three leaders have changed identities but they manage to hack into the network that helped them and track down the new identities. However, offscreen the real main villain of the trilogy gets freed and runs off then uses them hacking into the network to steal all the assets that wouldve went to the three leaders and makes himself the new head honcho. Then Lucas gets a text and ominously says “everythings gone according to plan, we have our targets”

So people thought Grey freed the villain and was double crossing 47. However the third game explains he just underestimated the guy and it was actually a random sailor who freed the villain. A random sailor we never see. No mention of him ever again in any level, which is a shame as the hitman trilogy is excellent at worldbuilding and using namedrops in previous levels to build up future targets and mission scenarios

So why did Lucas Grey say everythings according to plan? Well in hitman 3 when the villain phones diana she asks how he got her number and he says “i have everyones number”. So this throwaway line very quickly explains that he had Grey’s phone number and was able to fake sending a text from another number telling him everythings fine, and presumably also disabled Grey and 47 from getting calls until they get to the first mission in Hitman 3 presumably a few days later. Now as much as i enjoy respecting the audience’s intelligence to figure stuff out that’s both way too much information to have to infer from one line, it’s clearly made to cover up some poor writing and cutscene direction from the previous game and it’s also quite a stupid concept. How did he fake the phone number? How did he stop the other calls coming in that wouldve warned 47 of his escape? If he had Grey’s number how couldnt he track him down using his phone? which was the whole point of the first half of hitman 2’s story, it’s that he was hard to find

I don't know if it's just me. While the game itself was fun in a lot of ways. I feel like Fallout 4 had a pretty unsatisfying ending no matter what group you pick.

The lack of actual Ron pearlman narration didnt help.Even 3 had it.

Pokemon Ruby. After gen 2 you expect to re-explore a previous region, or at least battle the champions from other regions, but no. There's a total disconnect from the previous games with hardly a reference to them at all, and no interesting post-game.

To play devil's advocate, Emerald had the battle frontier and Steven as the "Red" of the game. And lore wise Hoenn was far from Kanto/Johto.

Besides, they werent going to even bring Kanto into Johto until Satoru Iwata of all people pulled out some literal programming magic to make it happen...its actually a miracle they were able to somehow fit all of that in a GB colour cartriage.

Guy earned that CEO position, may he rest in peace.
I actually liked the reject ending tbqh. It's the only ending with some actual balls. Too bad it was meant to be a "fuck you" to people.

If Bioware wasn't lazy/stupid/vindictive as fuck, they would have made it where reject with the highest military preparedness or whatever would have still given you the low EMS destroy ending but making it so that the galaxy defeats the Reapers on their own terms but at the highest cost.

Honestly, I would have preferred that. The galaxy may have suffered but it will live on and proving to these fuckers that they wont be forced to play their game so they are "allowed" to win.
Life is Strange.

Save Chloe, everyone in town dies. All your choices were pointless because everyone is dead.

Save the town. All your choices were pointless because they never happened.

Why WOULD anyone want to save Chloe?

A regular GB cart technically for Gold and Silver. Crystal was the only one that was exclusively for GBC. Still, programming magic or no it set a high standard for future entries and I would say that the non-remakes did stumble until they got to Emerald. It wasn't just the Battle Frontier, things like actually having Team Magma vs Team Aqua and Kyogre and Groudon (technically) battle helped, a lot. Wallace as champion to make Steven a Red equivalent kinda stumbled though, because he feels redundant since his former gym is still a Water-type gym. Juan would've been better saved as a Battle Frontier boss.

That said I say the real gold standard for the third game was Platinum, it took what Emerald laid down and really ran with it.

Danganronpa v3.

Not only has everything in this game been meaningless, everything in every game has been meaningless, because it's all actually a reality tv show, and the massive overarching question of the series is answered with a resounding wet, bloody fart.

Stop buying our games you shitheads.

While I respect the balls to call your fans a bunch of loser wannabe sadists to their face, it kind of smears a big wet stain on the entire series.

On a meta level, whenever the game let you fuck around a lot before the final boss but doesn't actually scale him to be a challenge then the end result is an anti climax of an ending.
Any JRPG with a ton of side quests and optional superbosses is really bad at this.

There's usually some kind of pressing world-ending threat and you just go fuck around and race chocobos for months or whatever then just sort of wander over and smack him and he dies.

Dead Island Riptide

Long story short, your immune characters turn out to only have the virus dormant within their bodies and they spend the whole game trying to keep it from waking it up. They are forced to take a mutagen of sorts that will very likely awaken the dormant virus to defeat the final boss. They seem fine tho and escape with other survivors on a boat.

Cue a few days later and the ship appears on some shore near a house, the boat is empty, blood everywhere and the hatch opens with a zombie sound.

THE END

literally, it ends there with a THE END sign.

I know they were obviously trying to setup D.I 2...but given what happened to it, we might as well end this series on a downer since, even if the sequel is coming out now, its implied all the survivors from D.I 1 and Riptide are dead and zombified.

What a fucking stab in the nuts...

Danganronpa v3.

The thing that amazes me about V3's ending, is despite how divisive it was, it somehow didn't nuke the entire fanbase completely (I think), compared to other media that ended poorly, i.e. LOST, Game of Thrones, and Attack on Titan.

It helps the real ending for the main plotline was an anime (that was more of a wet fart), and all the characters involved were in their own game. Plus the ending itself fits the tone of the franchise which was always obnoxiously meta.
Finally the main fanbase was more for the unique characters than the plot itself.

Essentially everything that happened to Command And Conquer. Red Alert and Tiberian Sun.

Honestly didn't mind the whole Japanese 3rd Faction in Red Alert, its just how they essentially shitcanned it afterwards. Then, you have the Tiberium timeline. The last real game was 3 and Kane's Wrath. As Twilight is absolutely horrible as they turned the game into a shitty moba. Also the ending of the story was absolute ass and completely drops the ball when it comes to storytelling as established by the previous games.

Command And Conquer is literally Kane trying to take over the world. GDI is there to stop him. Also, WTC bombing.

Command And Conquer Tiberian Sun starts showing that Kane is trying to evolve humanity but it seems dubious as alot of Tiberium experiments are just outright inhuman. Also not helping is CABAL who is trying to turn humans into cyborgs. And you have GDI trying to restore the old order of the world and at the same time, grappling with the reality of their changed world.

Command And Conquer 3 Tiberium Wars is GDI desperately trying to survive in a world completely terraformed by Tiberium. However, here is where you see the bad side of GDI. They are more or less the stereotypical blue helmets as memed by the net. Completely selfish, working for its own interest and perfectly fine with leaving humanity to rot in the red zones all the while barely enforcing the yellow zones and content in staying in their blue zones. Sound familiar? Nod in the other hand is trying their best to not only survive, but also keep people together. Actively helping people within the yellow and red zones. Not helping are the arrival of aliens. Part of Kane's plan.

Then you finally have Kane's Wrath. Where you see Kane's vision in action. Here, his plans are laid bare. He plans to uplift humanity via Ascension. He wants mankind to not only survive the hot mess known as Tiberium, but to also reach their full potential. Hence the extra emphasis towards advancing technology. Throughout the games, you actually see Nod's tech evolve. In 1, they are just people who looted a whole slew of second hand weaponry and equipment with a few exotics such as stealth technology. By 2, they have tech on par with GDI but also have futuristic shit such as lasers and cyborgs as well as tunneling vehicles. 3 and Wrath is where they have mecha and fine-tuned their laser and stealth technology. In this game, you actually see this trying to connect the dots between 2 and 3 with Wrath laying the final pieces of stonework.

And then you have Twilight which is basically Kane re-enacting ET with him phoning home.

As far as I'm concerned, the story ends with Kane utterly demolishing (((GDI))) and uplifts humanity via ascension.
