Any thoughts on smaller/local publishing agencies? No doubt self-publishing as people suggested seems like the best way forward in the long term, I just assume a smaller entity would have more of a vested interest in someone's shit succeeding as to get a bit of an image buff by proxy. Probably too far and few between.
Bruno is correct of course, but also keep two more things in mind.
One: an publishing house's output is proportional to its size. The niche, indie houses will publish two or three books annually--which means that your chances of rejection are actually high because they're going to be extremely selective, and probably also have a narrower view of what type of work is "on-brand" for the agency.
Two, they also have less presence and money/resources than bigger houses, and their books are less likely to turn up in bookstores or libraries, so the exposure they can give you is limited and more of the promotional work will fall on you.
I don't know if your chances of "making it" are necessarily higher for either self-publishing or indie-press publishing. Both are very competitive (but both also give you a tiny, tiny chance of getting picked up by a bigger brand). The main difference is the investment: time or money. Self-publishing is faster but expensive. To query a small house, it doesn't cost money, and you also omit the time/effort needed to find an agent (which you would need to publish with a larger house), but you're going to be spending a lot of time sending queries, waiting for replies, getting rejected, sending more queries ... etc., which is not even to speak of the time that a book spends getting reviewed and edited before publishing.
