Fuck dude I miss arcades. Tempest blew me away the first time I played it. Wasn’t even so much the games (although they were definitely a highlight) but just getting a group of friends together, each one of you with a roll of quarters in hand and having fun for a couple hours, maybe grabbing a slice of pizza afterward. That social aspect of doing something together in person.
That's a concept that died a slow prolonged death after the introduction of Internet and social media to gaming in the mid-late 2000s.I have vivid memories of childhood me playing my purple Nintendo lunchbox as a young kid with friends (either passing around the controller to play Viewtiful Joe or playing Bloody Roar: Primal Fury or CVS2 or some other fighting/racing game). Also LAN parties. It's a shame that the in-person social aspect of gaming is basically dead and any sort of multiplayer is purely online. Half the fun of video games is talking about them with your friends or using them as a vehicle for friendly competition. Zoomers really don't know what they missed.

My family members dying.

My 87 year old mother is in hospice now.

Seeing people I went to high school with in the obituaries, or seeing them in wheelchairs, when I remember them as active vibrant people.

My two oldest grandchildren are 15 and 13.

Catching an unguarded glimpse of myself in the mirror and it hitting me I'm really no longer young and attractive. I'm an old woman.
Going to see Reo Speedwagon or the Doobie Brothers in concert and realizing the audience is full of old people. Like me.

Realizing I'm only going to be a memory for the next two generations, and will be forgotten after that.

Tiktok is just a watered down version of
On that note, listening to a radio station that plays classic hits (mostly from the 70's and 80's), and they start adding songs from the 90's to the line up, and realizing that those songs you heard in your childhood are over 20 years old.
It was shocking to me that jar of flies is turning 30. I even had that epiphany when I saw one of those GTA V aesthetic videos and seeing that it really has been 10 years💀

Growing up during a time when The Simpsons was seen as edgy and controversial. Had to sneak to my neighborhood friend’s house to watch it

Having to use passwords instead of cloud saves to pick up where I left off in vidya
To be a fly on the wall when south park came out must have been a wild time.

The passwords technically are better cause you can engineer your own password and give yourself items. kinda nice

I'm so old, I remember when Mario Galaxy was the newest Mario game. I remember MySpace and when FaceBook used to be cool. I remember when you could say retard and faggot on forums. I remember when You could say nigga on twitter. I remember when Fred was the top YouTube channel. I remember when 4chan and Anonymous were seen as elite hackers. I remember HomeStuck being the most infamous fandom. I remember when everything on the Internet used to be good.

For months, and I do mean months in my school it was someone shouting at random "You killed Kenny" followed by a "You Bastards" by someone far away - stopped only when a kid called Kenny was hit by a bus an killed.
When the joke went meta LOL. I remember the movie being so goddam funny I legit could not finish it when it came out cause I laughed too hard.

Had a buddy who was named Kenny. Everyone teased him with that so often that the wanted to just be called Ken. He joined the army too so id imagine it was probably made worse.

Aww man, I remember secretly taping the South Park episode "Tom's Rhinoplasty" in motherfucking 1998 and then biking round to my mate's house the next day to watch it.

Obviously kids these days don't need to do shit like that, but honestly they're poorer for it. The feeling of genuinely getting away with something, when really all you were doing it watching a cartoon with swear words in it? That's gone, the world is just less innocent now.

Even better, when those pop culture things become cool again and you’re forced to watch a younger generation try to emulate them, but they always get it wrong. And they don’t notice.
Yeah it's kind of a lost art of "getting away" with things nowadays given how many avenues you have. Also content just simply cant be as edgy as it used to be given nothing is really taboo.

Realizing that if my dad and mom were still alive, they’d be 105 and 98 respectively. My dad would be over a century old. Mind blown.

The thing is, I don’t feel like I should be approaching the age when I become eligible for Medicare. My brain is looking around, going, “What in the hell happened? I‘ve only been out of high school for 20 years. Right? Right?!”

I have found that I am more willing to speak my mind because I’m not looking for anyone’s approval.

When a rock group I grew up listening to in my teens has a member die. (Eddie Van Halen anyone?)

“The mind is willing but the body is weak“ has layers to it that have become all too clear.
