UN Third Democratic Debates

There are now less than five months to go before the first votes are cast in the Democratic presidential nominating contest. So the spotlight is going to be even hotter on the 10 candidates who made the cut for Thursday's debate in Houston.

Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren is ascendant with more Democrats saying they like her than any other candidate, but former Vice President Joe Biden continues to lead in the polls. So what might set them apart, what could be the flashpoints Thursday night, and can any of the other candidates break through?

Here are some key logistical questions, followed by political ones:

When is the debate? Thursday from 8-11 p.m. ET

What channel is it on? ABC and Univision (with Spanish translation)

Who are the moderators? ABC's George Stephanopoulos, David Muir, Linsey Davis and Univision's Jorge Ramos

Who's on the stage? Biden, Sens. Cory Booker of New Jersey, Kamala Harris of California, Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota, Bernie Sanders of Vermont and Warren, as well as South Bend, Ind., Mayor Pete Buttigieg, Obama Housing Secretary Julián Castro, former Rep. Beto O'Rourke of Texas and tech investor Andrew Yang.

What were the qualifications to get into this debate? 2% in at least four Democratic polls, either nationally or in early states, as well as 130,000 donors from at least 20 states and at least 400 in each state.

Here are five political questions:
1. What will the Biden-Warren dynamic be like?
There's lots being made of the fact that this is the first time during this presidential campaign that Biden and Warren will share the debate stage. The question is whether they engage — and on what?

They signaled that they might mix it up. Warren has gotten attention for her myriad plans, but a Biden adviser told CNN that the former vice president will likely argue in the debate that "we need more than plans." One area ripe for debate is on bankruptcy law, an issue where they have a history.

2. Can Biden take the heat — again?
In the first two debates, varying candidates have picked fights with Biden — Harris on busing, Booker on criminal justice, and so on. And he'll likely be the focus of criticism from other candidates because of his continued lead in the polls.

But despite some missteps on the campaign trail and a lackluster first debate, his brand has shown resiliency. He not only leads the race nationally and in many state polls, but he's also extremely well liked among the Democratic base, something you'd likely never know if you only read Twitter, a point his campaign makes repeatedly.

That makes him a target for the other candidates, who have to be wondering what it will take to dislodge him. Still, Democratic strategists see Biden as a fragile front-runner, and he has to have solid outings in these coming debates that will likely get more attention than the first couple of rounds.

3. Will the candidates double down on positions unpopular with general-election voters?
A lot of the moderate Democratic candidates are not on the stage for this debate— Montana Gov. Steve Bullock, Colorado Sen. Michael Bennet and former Maryland Rep. John Delaney did not qualify, and former Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper dropped out to run for the Senate.

That means the progressives are likely to again target Biden and focus on issues unpopular outside of Democrats, like "Medicare for All" as a replacement to private insurance, health care for immigrants in the country illegally and decriminalizing border crossings.

4. Do Sanders and Warren maintain their nonaggression pact?
Warren is getting lots of attention and was not only the most popular candidate among Democrats in the latest NPR/PBS NewsHour/Marist poll, she's now caught up with — and even passed in some instances — fellow progressive Sanders in an average of the polls.

That has to grate on Sanders, even if people close to him continue to say that he sees Warren as an ally for the kind of change he wants to see in the country. They have maintained that Sanders will not go after Warren unless they are the last two standing, but they also privately point out differences, such as on foreign policy and party politics. It's probably not the time yet for Sanders to need to go after Warren, but could some prickliness begin to emerge?

5. What kind of chances do candidates needing a breakout take?
If a candidate hasn't had a moment yet, they now have a chance to do something to gain attention and create a spark for their campaign before a large audience.

Yang, for one, is promising to do something no one's done. What exactly? No one knows, but Yang is hoping you tune in.

At the same time, it's not clear how many people will tune in. The latest NPR/PBS NewsHour/Marist poll found that more people said they weren't going to watch (42%) than said they would (38%).

Tulsi, one of the few sane-ish candidates in the Democratic race, isn't going to be in this debate, so I'm not sure if I'm interested in watching this tonight

@Arm Pit Cream

Looks like you're a slowpoke, buddy.
I wouldn't have posted the thread so early, wouldn't have made a poll before the debates even started, I wouldn't have included Trump because he's not in the debates (of course people are going to largely vote for him, look at the results right now) and I would have layed out a lot more information for people not into politics, along with having a stream link.
Not impressed at all, I don't mind other people posting it if they put in the effort, thought and time.

I need to know Tulsi Gabbard's secret to being ignored by the machine. Her name has been scrubbed from anything I've seen today regarding this upcoming debate. It's like the DNC thinks people won't notice every time they "Bernie" a candidate.

She failed to qualify for the debate based on numbers, but the Democrats seem to really dislike her. My idle speculation is thus:

Tulsi is willing to go on FOX and be interviewed by Tucker Carlson, who genuinely seems to like her. The Democrats are busy boycotting FOX. So that is strike one against her.

She also single-handedly torpedoed Kamala Harris, which were disturbing optics to the Democrats (but hilarious to everyone else)

Third, as far as your typical Presidential candidate goes, she's a babe. That only works for Republicans.

Not a big politic guy, but are they really thinking of going with Biden or Warren? Trump is going to eat them alive. He already embarrassed Warren and i'm sure he has shit talked Biden at some point. Any lifelong politician will have a trail of flip flops and supporting bad policies which is endless ammunition for Trump. Can't say it's shocking that the game plan to stop another 2016 is to just double down on all the crap that caused Trump getting elected in 2016, but it is sad.
Yep, that's pretty much how it is right now. And yeah, any of these candidates will obviously get Jeb'd in an instant by Trump, but they really don't have anyone better right now. Well I mean, the DNC machinery could have backed a more moderate, less well known candidate, but that's just not where they seem to be headed right now. The Democrats are pretty clearly in full-blown purity test mode right now, and once the primary season is over, we'll see how much the chosen candidate moves back to the center, if they do at all.

TL;DR: They're fucked, and their best chance at winning the White House in the foreseeable future is hoping The Rock runs as a Democrat in 2024.

Can you expect anything more from a guy named @Pickle Dick?

Tulsi had an enormous amount of support in 26 different polls, but only two of them were polls that the DNC "approved" of. The DNC also never tells anyone what qualifies or disqualifies a polling station from being considered for their primaries, so there's no way to even understand how the system works if you're an "outsider." Basically, they just completely screwed the one candidate who actually could have stood a chance and the one candidate that most of the moderate Democrats wanted to see make it to the primary, so we really are going to get the 2016 experience all over again.

The fact that Robert made it into the next debate above Tulsi is just fucking laughable, though. What the fuck are you doing here, Robert? You just endorsed using credit card companies to target law-abiding Americans for legally purchasing guns. Go take a flying fucking leap into a pile of dog shit.

I don't get why anybody would want to watch this, and not because I lean so heavily right it's given me scoliosis. Every debate, every question yields the exact same answer from every candidate. It's like they're just taking turns reciting what's on the teleprompter, but the teleprompter broke and keeps feeding the same lines. Plus, who cares who wins? Not a single one of these people is charismatic enough to oppose the current president in the first place. They're all easy targets (mostly because they're all clones of the same establishment goon.)

At least when we had a gaggle of Republican clowns back in 2016 they generally tried to formulate their own answers. Nobody would argue Ben Carson, Jeb Bush, Chrispy Cream and Donald Trump sounded like the same people. Is this really the best the Democrats could do, or are they self-aware enough to realize they should just wait for 2024?

I think the real nominee here is Castro. 2020 will be about holding the House and preparing for 2024. Castro is getting campaign experience, getting his name on a national level, and bowing out before things get dirty. He's they're demographics is destiny candidate, they've been prepping him since 2012, I think, to try and make Texas purple. He'll be there chosen candidate in 2024.

If you're right, then the Dems are even stupider than I thought. Castro is a manlet who will never win a national election.

I hardly know who any of these people are and now you're telling me Fidel Castro is back from the dead and running for the U.S. presidency

best timeline

At this point the dead body of Fidel Castro is probably about as viable a candidate in the general election as anyone they're fielding.

Beauty and strength have really become unforgivable sins to them. They can have an attractive man, but the man must be unthreatening. They can have a strong woman, but she can't be feminine. It kind of hurts them for this sort of popularity contest since everyone still subconsciously responds to these things thanks to millions of years of primate evolution.

She [Tulsi] failed to qualify for the debate based on numbers, but the Democrats seem to really dislike her.
Yep, I'm sure it was just genuinely a matter of low numbers.

Not anything like the DNC cherrypicking and possibly manipulating polls. The DNC brass sure were lucky that the candidate they disliked just happened to fail to qualify in their non-transparent qualifying system.

I want Biden to win the nomination just to see him collapse on the floor during the debate with Trump, and watch the media leap to reassure everyone that the health of presidential candidates is not that big of a deal.

I don't get why anybody would want to watch this
You will never experience or understand the wonderful world of masochism.

It's only masochism for Democrats.

I think I can safely speak for ALL black and brown Americans when I say that, as a mixed race latinx PoC, I am 100% voting for whoever speaks the most Spanish in tonight's debate

💪🏽

How the hell did Robert Francis O'Rourke and Castro make the cut? I'm probably not going to watch this one and it seems many people agree. No one cares about these people outside of the spectacle and they've nixed all the people that make a good spectacle.
I remember when Castro was voted Sexiest Man in San Antonio, so he has that going for him. This shit is such a goddam joke. I don't want it to ever end.

Tulsi Gabbard, the Punished Mommy GF, was the youngest woman running by about 20 years, and the second youngest candidate with Buttigieg only 1 year younger. Tulsi Gabbard is under 40 and more than 30 years younger than Warren. You'd think being considered a good looking person who has no major negative health history and is healthy enough to serve in the National Guard would be an asset in the nomination process. In the election it would be, but in the nomination process, this is a huge handicap. It makes the establishment geezers look ugly and feeble.

Just look who the front runners are. Right now the front runner man, Joe Biden, is in his 70s. This geezer also had his skull sawn off to deal with aneurysms so severe he had a Catholic priest on hand to administer Last Rites. To this day, he still travels with a neurosurgeon and God only know what bewildering array of therapies, treatments and drugs are keeping him stumbling and bobbling along. Biden has a meltdown at every speaking event, has to ensure people that he isn't "going crazy" and just had a blood vessel in his eye burst on cable television. That's the front runner for their male candidates and the field overall. Second or third place is held by a man even older than that!
The woman frontrunner is a cantankerous, sanctimonious finger-waver who just turned 70.

Donald Trump is the oldest president that America has ever had. I like him, but he's "thick and chunky and husky" to put a positive spin on it. The reality is, he's quite fat and is a noted junk food lover. A 39 year old in the military contrasted to a 72 year old guy scarfing Micky D's on a routine basis would be a great line of attack. Now, they are going with a feeble old man, a cranky old coot who would turn 80 in the White House and an old, shrimpy woman, which is Trump/Hillary Redux on the debate stage. Everybody always talks about OPTICS, well, what do you think it's gonna look like when the incumbent president shows up and he's a 6 foot tall man and his opposition is a 5 foot tall, 70 year old woman?
What does that look like to the gut level and the hind brain?

Plus, not sure how Tramp would've pulled insults at Tulsi. What could he possibly attack her for? She's nearly perfect. Tramp would have to run through hours of research (that he won't do) before he could find something to really stick her in the mud with.
