Pirates of the Golden Age of Piracy were actually somewhat better off than their compatriots in the Royal Navy, who were little better than slaves who had often been kidnapped or otherwise dragooned into service in various nefarious ways. As horrible as the piratical life was, many crew leapt at the chance to join their victorious attackers rather than stick with the Navy.
Of course, life at sea was pretty much a horrible affair for everyone, with a low expected lifespan, but it wasn't that great on land, either.
Also, there was a lot of butt piracy. There's even a book about it.

I don't remember which of these threads it was in, but from what I recall, the girl didn't really want to go on the date, but didn't want to be perceived as a bitch, so she relented and gave the incel/SH'er a shot. He proceeded to say he wanted to marry her and was very grope-happy with her, and when she said she wanted to leave, the incel/SH'er went psychotic on her, calling her a bitch and a slut, running away, then tearfully coming back to apologize and ask for forgiveness.
