I’m both fascinated and interested by what goes on inside Phil Burnell’s little head, and I think this video is an interesting watch:

Now this is one of the few examples of Phil actually editing his “kahntent” and the most viewed video on his channel, but what I wanted to discuss wasn’t the obvious laziness on display.

(Note how he constantly uses the same zoom cut, misspeaks several times, but just goes “meh this is fine! I can’t be arsed to do another take!)

Takeaways I find interesting:

1: His begacy/legacy is very VERY important to him. He starts right off the bat with introducing himself as “someone who’s been on YouTube for EIGHT YEARS”. And over the course of a 15 minute video, he brings it up AGAIN at a later point, and adds the fact that he has uploaded “OVER 50.000 GAMEPLAY VIDEOS!”

Does Phil Burnell know who he is, aside from “Khantent creator with an X year legacy on YouTube”? I doubt it. It’s his whole identity and why he’s extremely thinskinned about it. Well, about everything.

2: Phil is retarded. Maybe not in the clinically correct sense of the word, but his personality seems to stunted and stopped developing in his late teens.

Watching this video, it’s important to remember that this isn’t Phil just on the cuff riffing off stuff.

He sat down, wrote a script, patted himself on the shoulder (undoubtedly going “this is AWESOME Phil! Grade A material!”) and went and recorded it.

And what do we get? Constant swearing, cussing, dropping “Shit” and “ass” and “bullshit” at every possible opportunity.

Phil talks like an edgy 16 year old talking with his buddies at the bus stop. And seems to think it’s perfectly appropriate for a “professional” review video.

(Note his “salesman” voice, that’s probably the result of watching Eurogamer videos and going: “Oh, so that’s how you’re supposed to sound!”)

A ten year old would know that this kind of language isn’t acceptable in polite society, let alone in an “edited professional” video.

Phil though? Undoubtedly figures that his profanity and scatological teen speak, is just “being real”.

Thoughts? Am I way off base here?

Ah yes, good old 'One Take' Burnell. I remember watching Tevin's coverage of his old KOGaming videos, and there wasn't a single one where he didn't stutter or misspeak, and instead of doing another take and editing he left it in.

Mmm yes tell us something we don't already know about this despicable specimen. Just recently during the final "10 minutes" of his latest stream, a stream viewer told him that he had to leave and attend to other things and Phil said to the guy and directed this at other people as well, "You know you don't have to leave, you can chill for a little bit". Now this first part of his little ramble sets his demeanour straight up, he expects people to watch him for the majority of the stream time on his terms and doesn't want to see the stream numbers fluctuate that much, especially well before the stream ends, but the big takeaway is what he says next, " I guess people have a very strict schedule, they have to leave right away".

Now I don't have to explain to you the level of thick-headedness and misapprehension someone else has to have in order to not understand why someone just has to get up and leave suddenly in order to attend having other responsibilities.

Not to mention, the irony of him complaining about other people's "strict schedules" when his entire life is built around fast food, money, and the ultra autistic schedules he sets for himself. Motherfucker spergs out like crazy if anything in his rigid schedule goes slightly awry.

The man had a major spergout the other day when it turned out that (shock! Gasp!) a game came out on another day than Phil thought.

His adherence to his schedule has always struck me as particular autistic on his part.

Does Phil really think that normal people function like this?

I know Phil takes virtually zero interest in other streamers/gaming in general, but surely he must have noticed he’s one of the very few/the only one to do this?

I agree and I think a huge part of it is he never had proper socialization, even before he became a full time streamer.

Social interaction is big in development in children and even for adults because it helps reinforce norms and expectations - it may not be conscious or deliberate, but people will change their behavior and habits to fit in with the people around them.

This never seems to have happened with Phil: Ignoring his obviously BS claims about his time in university or high school it seems like he had few or no real-life friends growing up and the next closest thing he had was the FGC and the Internet. These are not mutually exclusive and I know that some of his earliest documented posts were from some FGC or Street Fighter forum.

There are two issues with this. First, online interaction is not the same as in person interaction: Body language, tone, and other "tells" like taking unusually long to answer a question do not exist in a messageboard. There is also more tolerance for acting over-the-top online compared to in-person. So Phil's reference point for "normal" was already way off-base.

The second part is that he was pretty much raised on edgy entertainment like Howard Stern, South Park, and WWE. Cartman from "South Park", and heel characters in WWE were all designed to be hated by the other characters, but to be entertaining to the audience. Howard Stern is a bit different but he still used his shock jock position + the controversy it created to boost his own publicity. This was very big to Pig psychology because it meant if and when he did act inappropriately and people told him to knock it off he thought they were playing along and actually liked it. This meant any sort of negative reinforcement would not work because he did not think the people delivering it meant what they were saying. This would also have really kicked in in his late teens/early 20s ("South Park" debuted in the late 1990s and changed from a weird random-humor show to cultural criticism after the 1998 Columbine shooting) which meant his ability to take and appropriately process feedback was destroyed right around the time he might have started growing out of his edgelord phase. That social stunting also locked him mentally at 16-20.

There may also be some form of autism or other social impairment. AVGN and Spoony have made scat + gay jokes over the year and are (well, were in Spoony's) case more popular and e-famous than he ever was. What he doesn't seem to get is that the delivery and context are crucial - just making a scat joke isn't funny, making one that's so absurd and over the top that nobody could take it seriously is. AVGN's delivery is so deadpan that he could easily swap out scat for any number of other gross-out things and it would still work. All he sees is "AVGN said 'shit' and people laughed" and then tries to imitate the wrong parts of the joke in his own, completely inept way. Autists have very concrete thinking and sometimes struggle to see how unrelated information fits together and that really fits well with Phil's inability to understand why his video style is so unpleasant to watch.

I think Phil’s school years also did a number on him.

He recently admitted he was bullied in school, and from the available information out there, it was basically your average ghetto school with white kids like Phil being the minority.

This could partly explain the “Big Dick Burnell” act we often see in his safe space: The stream. Phil learned early on that if you’re mean and yell at those weaker than yourself, that means you rule the roost.

The ghetto school also could explains Phil’s “missing” autism diagnosis.

(Yes, we often joke about Phil’s autism, but there’s no way he isn’t on the spectrum, even if it’s a “mild” case of Aspergers.)

If you’re the guidance counselor/school nurse at a ghetto school, lord knows you got your hands full and might miss the quiet, weird little white sperg in the back, who might behave weird, but doesn’t really make trouble.

Had Phil gone to a better school, his quirky behavior might not have gone as unnoticed and he could have had some early intervention.

Instead he was left to self medicate himself through alcohol and gambling.

(Note how in one of Phil’s earliest videos, he talks about how he likes to sit back and relax with a drink when playing. So clearly self medicating/drinking is something he learned very early on.)

And just to turn back on Phil’s autism/Aspergers.

Much of what makes Phil so entertaining, is his comically clumsy attempts at navigating the world around him.

I also think his undiagnosed autism is part of why he has developed into a social recluse. It’s not just paranoia and fear of detractors. The world to Phil is a scary place that doesn’t make much sense, which is why he rarely leaves his serious, adult Fort Gout. And why he chooses to have his only (barely) social interactions from the safety of his streams where PHIL is in charge and PHIL makes the rules.

(BTW: Don’t mean this to be a “poor, little Phil! Nothin’ he could do!” post. There are plenty of folks with undiagnosed autism that get their shit together and/or get help. Autism is of course also the least of Phil’s vices. The man is a walking, talking embodiment of the seven deadly sins, and autism isn’t why.)

Remember, Phil has zero regular interaction with normal people anymore. No friends, only talks to his parents once a week, and he may not be spending that much time with Kat given his severe WWE gacha problem. When an idea pops into his head, there is literally nobody to give him negative feedback so he'll run with it unless or until reality smacks him in the face.

See my above comment and I suspect you are wrong about Phil not caring about other streamers. Some of his potshots a year or two ago about "children's streamers who die their hair" were obviously aimed at Ninja even if he did not mention the guy by name and he also tries to "go viral" whenever another streamer has a scandal like his riff on Projared. He knows other streamers are out there, he knows they are more popular than him, and he absolutely believes it is because they appeal to children or tasteless, casualized plebs. If he does something different it's because everybody else is wrong and he is right.

Consider his bullying background, entitlement from his earlier years, self centered attitude, willing isolation from society and complete disregard of others and intent to cause harm, habitual lying and attempts to manipulate others. In short of sociopathy, which is often often comorbid with NPD.
Combination of which resemble autism there is one difference. Sociopaths know how to socialize but act like no filter spergs knowingly, where autistd can't read social cues and lack that filter and lack the awareness to see it.

It seems clear that he received a lot of attention from his parents and was very likely not made to do any chores beyond basic cleaning up your room stuff, seeing as he used to complain about having to do dishes, laundry, etc. This is probably partly to blame for the lazy pig ordering out or dining in at restaurants every day, very little clean up and prep required, and he seems to pathologically justify his lifestyle through lies either out of knowing how bad it makes him look to live that way or pure ignorance (See claiming grocery shopping costs as much as dining out for example). Phil is not an 'Only Child's. Phil was raised with his adopted sister Melissa from very early childhood, like 1st or 2nd grade, until his Jr or Senior year of high school at least.

Melissa is also Phil’s cousin, but she was raised in the same house with him. Dave and Linda Burnell were her adopted parents for probably the last half of her childhood.

That's just how much of a self centered asshole Phil is that Phil almost never mentions his adopted sister Melissa.

Phil is not an 'Only Child's. Phil was raised with his adopted sister Melissa from very early childhood, like 1st or 2nd grade, until his Jr or Senior year of high school at least.

Melissa is also Phil’s cousin, but she was raised in the same house with him. Dave and Linda Burnell were her adopted parents for probably the last half of her childhood.

That's just how much of a self centered asshole Phil is that Phil almost never mentions his adopted sister Melissa.

The irony that brings joy to mah detractor heart is that Melissa, after some fuckups, seems to have gotten her life on track, and leads a normal life with things that Phil will never have: Friends, family and a meaningful jawb. (Something in healthcare as I recall.)

Since this is the Dr. Fred Freud thread, I can’t help but wonder if Melissa inadvertently helped screw up Phil’s relationship with women. Something about seeing them as both potential competition for attention?

Phil is most likely (like 90% likelihood, lol) on the spectrum after all, and autists often have little empathy and once programmed, their autistic brain is pretty fucking hard to un-program.

Yeah, from when I went looking the only times I recall Phil mentioning Melissa, besides talking shit about her bio-parents, is he will mention video games that she had that he didn't have.

Like he talks about how she had a Gameboy and he didn't during some autismo manifesto he's delivering about his entire personal history with the Pokémon franchise.

Another time he was explaining how he got his own personal Christmas tree for his room every year that he got to decorate however he wanted, and mentioned how she also got her own personal Christmas tree for her room, and his mom would decorate the one in the living room however she wanted. Of course Dave doesn't get mentioned at all in this story where he has to buy 3 fucking Christmas trees every year for his family.

Considering how disdainful he was over his parents not getting him the wolverine toy and how badly he later changed that story when he justifiably was mocked for his tantrum over it to make his parents seem less like assholes (But still assholes) from his perspective I wouldn't doubt Melissa took something from him, and seeing the later two comments posted confirms this.

Phil has a very severe case of parental attention and seems to be under the belief that as his parents only biological child, he is/was deserving of all their attention. He shit talks every relation of his with stories like they were druggies/ran with bad crowds and I suspect that is because at various events these cousins and various other relations stole Mommy and Daddy dearests attention away from him, thus he feels the need to talk shit about how some cousin of his died in Mexico or other random bullshit that is probably about as true as Chris-Chan's long list of ancestors. Phil is almost certainly somewhere on the spectrum and either knows it and won't tell because he thinks he will get laughed at or has never been aware/was diagnosed but his extreme narcissism denies the truth. The guy genuinely might've been looking for a woman to be his replacement mommy who will provide him all the attention he needs and might be part of his aversion to having any children of his own, as his mom-wife will now be giving attention to their children and not pouring it all onto a grown ass man going into his 40s. I could apply this thought to all people who treat pets as replacement children in general. I personally find people treating their pets as that distasteful, nothing wrong with treating a dog or cat like family, but there is a lot wrong with tucking them in bed at night and some of the weird shit those types do.

Phil, if you are reading this, seriously seek help. It will be hard for you to admit and and I know you live in the now but a little therapy with an actual therapist will do you some good.
