Actually that might be a little harsh. By "competent", I think it's more along the lines of a drummer that just gets the job done without showboating and/or otherwise upstaging the rest of the band. Phil might not be a God-tier drummer, but he's not exactly Meg White either.

That's certainly possible! You know your friend better than I do, and that may indeed be what he means.

I'm just saying that as someone who knows a lot of musicians, more often than not, when a musician says somebody else is "competent", what they mean is "he can do the job, but I'm better". (somebody who has real skills, but doesn't showboat, is often described as "professional"; i.e. "Joe is competent" means Joe's nothing special, but he's perfectly adequate to play in your AC/DC cover band, while "Joe is a professional" means Joe's talents are probably going to waste on the stuff you're throwing at him, but he'll do it without complaints because he's a worker)

Again, disclaimer here, I'm not the kind of person who shits on AC/DC for having crap musicians. I think AC/DC's fine! But instrumentfags do tend to look down on them, as you can see if you check the comments section on that YT vid. (there are more positive comments about the drummer from Blink-182 than there are about Phil Rudd...!)

Malcolm is one of the best rhythm guitarists in the world, hands down. Tone, precision, and perfect note selection.
Are the songs simple? Absolutely. But absolutely perfect for drinking beers and having sex with questionable women.
 
I'm just surprised no-ones made a Bon Scott bio-pic yet.

Maybe it's because he was s a pretty distinctive looking guy- I can't think of any actor who could pull off playing Bon. And they'd probably mangle the accent/voice.

They have been putting out stuff recently that is on the same level as the stuff they've been releasing since the late 80s. You don't even have to look at it through the "wow they're great for their age" angle, they still rock
