Usually when musicians call other musicians "competent", it's not really a compliment. This is especially true when the musician plays the same instrument; it's like your boss saying your work performance "was passable", or grading a student's paper at C-. Competent means you're doing your job, but that's about it.
Actually that might be a little harsh. By "competent", I think it's more along the lines of a drummer that just gets the job done without showboating and/or otherwise upstaging the rest of the band. Phil might not be a God-tier drummer, but he's not exactly Meg White either.

That's certainly possible! You know your friend better than I do, and that may indeed be what he means.

I'm just saying that as someone who knows a lot of musicians, more often than not, when a musician says somebody else is "competent", what they mean is "he can do the job, but I'm better". (somebody who has real skills, but doesn't showboat, is often described as "professional"; i.e. "Joe is competent" means Joe's nothing special, but he's perfectly adequate to play in your AC/DC cover band, while "Joe is a professional" means Joe's talents are probably going to waste on the stuff you're throwing at him, but he'll do it without complaints because he's a worker)

Again, disclaimer here, I'm not the kind of person who shits on AC/DC for having crap musicians. I think AC/DC's fine! But instrumentfags do tend to look down on them, as you can see if you check the comments section on that YT vid. (there are more positive comments about the drummer from Blink-182 than there are about Phil Rudd...!)

Dad rock but it’s one of the best height of drunkenness bands to come on a bars jukebox

Not sure if these are the right videos; going on memory here. But interdasting none the less.

First up, here is Brian with his brother who isn't a famous rock star:

Brian Johnson - Cars that Rock - Brian's Brother Part 1:

Brian Johnson - Cars that Rock - Brian's Brother Part 2:

He's also in to cars, in a big way. He doesn't seem phased by Brian's success. They both seem to have a real respect for each other. No niggles. No snide. Just a comfortable respect. It's not earth-shattering drama, it's just that go-along-to-get-along that you need in a functional family.

And here we have Brian giving it the fucking large!

Brian Johnson of AC/DC - Autoweek One on One:

You just know he fucked her arse off after that car ride!

What a car!

What a ride!

What a slut!

Fuckling LOLs.

The only man on planet earth that can use the salutation "M'dear" and still get a shag out of it at the end of the day. You know she did! Her fanny all wet after a throbbing 20,000 CC's showed her how it's done! Never mind the notch! That girly was all primed to go after first igntion. I think I need to calm the fuck down, actually.

<deep breath>

I'm good, fam!

If Bon Scott hadn't drunk himself to death he'd be sitting in that car seat now.

I wonder what car he would have driven?

Malcolm is one of the best rhythm guitarists in the world, hands down. Tone, precision, and perfect note selection.
Are the songs simple? Absolutely. But absolutely perfect for drinking beers and having sex with questionable women.

I'm just surprised no-ones made a Bon Scott bio-pic yet.

Maybe it's because he was s a pretty distinctive looking guy- I can't think of any actor who could pull off playing Bon. And they'd probably mangle the accent/voice.

Grew up in Texas, thus I grew up with nothing but classic rock and country

I love them

They have been putting out stuff recently that is on the same level as the stuff they've been releasing since the late 80s. You don't even have to look at it through the "wow they're great for their age" angle, they still rock

"I'm sick to death of people saying we've made 11 albums that all sound the same. We've made 12 albums." - Angus Young

Easy to like, hard to love. I'd like them more if Big Balls were never written. As a white man, it is my duty to like Highway to Hell and Back in Black, though.

Just imagine if they had written a track called "Big Black Balls" - that would have really sent your fucking cuck mind racing wouldn't it?

And you're probably an abbo as well.

(shit, I might have got some posts mixed up, fuck!).

Never was a huge fan, but there's a few of their tracks I love.
