Tipping is a miserable practice and I wish there was some way to end it.

That said, the old "you should just pay your employees more" thing-- they don't raise their prices and pay the waitstaff more directly, because Americans will just say "too expensive" because math literacy is atrocious in this country.

Tipping culture is completely fucked in Burgerland:

- Tip inflation is out of control. It used to be 10% a couple decades ago. Then 15%. Now I see options that give me three options: 22%, 25% and 30%. Below that is a custom tip or no tip.

- More tipping than ever before. Why do I need to tip at Subway now? Seems like these days any time I have some kind of service, a tip is now getting requested.

- I saw an article from Apple News chiding people for not tipping in cash. I am not going to carry cash just so a waitress can underreport her tips come tax time. That same article said that’s a myth but let’s be real here.

- A credit card I have will ask me periodically if I want to add or remove part of a tip left at a restaurant. It’s mindblowing that such a feature gets offered. My guess is people get guilted into paying an inflated tip and then want to find a way to lower it, which is fucked.

These issues have been spiraling out of control since COVID. I believe in tipping well and have always been but this is clearly trying to gouge more money out of customers. So now my family and I cook at home and it’s rare I bother going to a restaurant unless I get reimbursed by my employer. At the current rate, in a couple years if you don’t tip 40%, you’ll be doxed by your waiter.

Your finger is totally on the pulse with all of this. The only thing you forgot to mention at the end is that the ultimate goal is this: These terrible gig economy companies (doordash, Uber, et al.) want to pass their cost of doing business on to the customer completely.

I tip waiters at restaurants and the guy at the car wash that squeegees you before you drive in. As a rule I never tip Indians.

I only tip if it's at a decent enough establishment to warrant it. I do not tip at diners, cafes, etc. I usually pay in cash so there is no automatic add-on. You should always pay in cash at businesses you know expect a tip. Never put tips in tip jars. Even if you think the person working did an over the top job, it gets distributed to all the workers not the one who served you. I especially don't tip if it isn't a local place.

The servers being very nice and charming is part of the experience at nice places so tipping them isn't bothersome IMO.

Not tipping is niggerish but I can see their point sometimes especially with electronic tipping everywhere all of a sudden. "There's a screen afterward that's going to ask you some questions" is what I've been presented with recently. Am I tipping the screen?

I was at a really busy bar the other day and I ask the guy for a bottle of beer from the fridge. He popped the top off of it and gave it to me, charged me like $8. Crazy bar prices are normal, but then he has the audacity to stop me before I walked away and demand I give him a tip. I was so shook that it took me a while to comprehend what he wanted. Just charge me an extra dollar or two if you're going to make me pay it anyway??

Certain things I have no issue tipping: sit down restaurants, delivery, bartenders, barbers etc.

Like hell I’m going to tip things like fast food wagies they’ve been trying to push in certain places lately however.

Using a bottle opener is real hard, I got one that's on the other side of a little box cutter so if you're not careful you cut your fingers, It totally sucks but I like using it as a gauge to how drunk I've gotten.
