Titanic tourist submersible goes missing with search under way

  • 🐕 I am attempting to get the site runnning as fast as possible. If you are experiencing slow page load times, please report it.
A lot of absolute horseshit cash-in videos on YouTube now, but I rate this one for an astute analysis of the psychology and other factors used to convince people the sub was safe.

It also explains Rush’s obstinacy against detractors of his ideas, since he had been pioneering composite aircraft in the 90s and proven right about that.

And finally it pretty conclusively (in my mind) debunks the message transcript, I am now on Team Fake for that one.

(I’m not embedding it because that doesn’t work for me via tor)
Got you covered with the embed.

And yeah there sure is a load of low effort vultures trying to grift of off Rushs Darwin Award with low effort videos.

While we're pointing to domain specialists, here's one from a guy who works with carbon fibre for a living. He points out all the shortcuts they seemed to take in the assembly and bonding of the composite and titanium parts and explains what he thinks are the most likely failure modes.

They skimped on the glue, apparently.

I'm actually amazed how many videos have been made on this event. Every channel remotely having to do with ships, engineering, science Youtubers and even LegalBytes cashes in on it.

Maybe it's because I view a fair share of educational and engineering channels, but it has been quite a while since an event has made such waves. Maybe we'll see a generation of autists building seep ocean submersibles cause of Stockton Rush.

Appologies for double post but Tor on Android sucks and is all but uncontrollable.

All of the Engineering Channels and transport, shipping, safety, air crash and disaster channels and even the true crime and legal ones are laser focusing on this one because it is such a clear case study in doing everything wrong. Breaking every rule and watching the expected outcome play out. Its the billionaire version of hold my beer. But played out with high tech super subs, hubris rarely seen, and layers of fraud for little seeming purpose. It's got something for everybody. We're not gonna get anything better until Elon Mush fires a Starship full of fools into the sun.

one: he needs a fitness trainer if he expects to get laid if he doesn't have brains or charm to get by with
two: that is a bad photoshop, that girl's proportions are so weird.

"Stepdad"
He doesn't care because his "dad" married his mom because she was a nice piece of ass, well after he was born.
I can't imagine why he gives no shits outside of how much cash he's gonna get when the rich guy who was fuckin' his mom died, lmao.

I was going to say with those circumstances in my favor I'd be rooting for the old man to shit the bed ASAP. Just kiss his ass long enough to get your cash.

I don't think he did a very good job of deboonking the transcript as it's possible the coded language was edited to make it legible and he seems to be under the impression the data rate is so low it'd take forever to send a sentence. Here's a screen cap from the controller remapping incident where you get a clear shot of the chat window where it shows sentences are definitely possible and they don't always use coded language. (The sub replied 'yes' instead of using the convenient Y shortcut)

My guess is they'd be getting 100-1000 bps and it probably varies a lot based on conditions and movement. That speed is slow as shit but usable for sending messages of the size shown in the transcript. I tried to read this PDF but got lost in the weeds, they suggest an absolute max of 10 Kbps at those depths https://millitsa.coe.neu.edu/publications/book/handbook-chap5.pdf

Good info, thanks. Having once used a 300 baud modem, you’re right, that is quite usable for short text messages.

There may have been different systems in use at different times, the “single character takes several seconds” thing is something i’ve heard before and would match up with that key he showed, but technology moves on.

Is the transcript real, I’m still dubious about that.

Edit: the guy’s latest video is about Stockton Rush’s grandfather, Stockton Rush, who killed 6 people in a hubristic maritime materials science mishap.

Yeah I don't see any sentence in the transcript that looked like it would be too long, using the screenshot of what we know the burst transmitter was capable of, they were all pretty Laconic, terse messages back and fourth, never exceeding more than a couple of sentences.
I don't see how what we've seen the transmitter capable of rules out the transcript, it looks pretty reasonable to me.

I got the True Crime dude so much in my feed I dug into him a little. Nick van der Leek He's a surprisingly well published South African author. Mostly true crime and deadly scandal type stuff. He seems to have a particular area of focus on Deaths in the Adventure Tourism Industry. Mostly shady expeditions to Everest etc. Not an expert on anything regarding the Sub. But not the usual grifting Youtuber. He's possibly a Lolcow in the general South African sense.
