Titanic tourist submersible goes missing with search under way

  • 🔧 Actively working on site again.
I think I'm on the camp that it's primarily due to the company CEO being insane and thinking his idea will work while everyone else either left or hoped for the best, rather than it being diversity hiring. The core idea was, like the sub, unsalvageable.

At least to his credit, he actually believed in the death trap to go on it, and most of the people he killed were almost certainly ones that the world is better without.

Yeah. It's in the shape of a PlayStation controller. It's why I prefer it to my XBox one since that's what I'm more used to. But I guess once someone starts saying XBox it sticks. And if any media is saying it's XBox that's just because they are stupid. You could tell them it's a Nintendo Switch joycon and they'd go with it.
But it is an Xbox controller, it literally has the same same button style and labels as the Xbox 360 controller

The bumpers and triggers are also labeled like how they are on an Xbox 360 controller, on a DualShock 3 the buttons would be labeled "L1", "R1", "L2" and "R2"

I realize it's currently fashionable to rag on the female "contributors" to the pringles can of underwater death, & that there are a lot of posters here questioning why the CEO neglected to use a tested design or, at the very least, crib some details from a working sub, because that common sense solution is clearly obvious to anyone but him.

IMO, the answer lies in the CEO also being a weapons-grade narcissist with (too much) money to back up his ego. He didn't just hire young, white women for the wokepoints, but with the specific intent to surround himself with people so inexperienced, naive, & (like their early career male counterparts) desperate for approval that absolutely no one would question his shithouse design or methodology.

He worked in aerospace before his foray into becoming red paste, so obviously he knew that carbon fiber is the new, sexy building material & everyone who suggested otherwise was clearly stupider than he was. Anyone who gave him a reality check--from Josh Gates to his former engineers to other submersible experts--was old & stuffy & jealous of his brilliant "innovation." Why would he stand on the shoulders of giants? He had his own stellar intellect, a genius for invention that all those other engineers & scientists lacked, & everyone before him was just overcomplicating things like . . . safety, communications, pressure differentials . . . he had something to prove, that all those who successfully traveled to 4000 m were faffing about with expensive materials when a $30 controller & some leftover B-grade carbon fiber would do.

What gets my goat about this whole situation is just how terrible of a huckster this guy was, which points more to narcissism than just hubris, ignorance, or wealth insulation from criticism. If money was the ultimate object, it's really easy to fool a couple of billionaires with a dive to only a couple hundred feet, tethered, with a shitty joystick to jiggle the submersible around a bit & navigate a 3D animated rendering. The fucking viewport was only a dick's length across, for fuck's sake. For an extra 50 grand he could even give paying passengers the full "oh shit we lost comms, lost pressure" faux emergency & no one would have been the wiser. Lost opportunity there.

Also paging @DietCoke4Life, your presence is requested in this thread (to weigh in on how the Navy can hear every dolphin fart & the probable timeline of info release).

TLDR: the CEO was a narcissistic bastard & here are a couple funny screenshots from the glowing shithouse that is /pol/ for your entertainment.

But it's worth stating. In every email this is brought up to him it is as you point out, "muh innovation." Innovation! INNOVATION! He sidestepped the safety issue by talking about innovating past safety standards. People on the left online are buzzing about GREEDY OLD WHITE GUYS because they're retarded and overly reductionistic, but here you really have it: he was your typical narcissist, without almost magical thinking about his own intellect and ability, and he died on that sub because of it. I wonder if he had long enough to realize at all how much he had fucked up? There's a lot of cult mindsets in business. If you've ever worked wtih corporate types and know the lingo they use, and know them personally, that shit is their life. It's a cult-like mindset.

The left wing is using this to talk about safety regulations, but unless I'm mistaken they operated in international waters and couldn't be stopped?

Ships in international waters are bound by the laws of the country whose flag they fly. Additionally many nations exercise jurisdiction over crimes committed against their citizens or actions by aliens that threaten their national security or government. And that doesn't mean you can just refuse to fly a flag, since the ship is still presumably registered somewhere.

Actual enforcement is difficult but they can certainly go after you after the fact. Their contract specified choice of law and choice of forum in the Bahamas, which is a popular place for ships to be registered because they tend to look the other way, have no income tax, etc.

A contract can't waive criminal jurisdiction if there is any, though.

Also it's possible covering up the known engineering defects of this craft would count as fraud in the inducement and nullify the entire contract but I'd be ahead of the facts in saying that's actually true. The standard is high to prove such a thing.

This was not some unavoidable act of God, but a deliberate choice to gamble other people's lives on a blatantly flawed design even after being explicitly warned by someone whose experience in the relevant field was extensive. It could have been avoided by simply not being a brainlessly idiotic shithead.

The big difference between xbox and playstation is where the analog sticks/dpad are located (and the body shape of the controller itself), the F710 uses the playstation layout, it's just the buttons are labeled with the xbox setup because most PC games accepting X-input will display the xbox buttons once they see a joystick connected, and it would be a pain in the ass to have a game say "press Y" while your controller has a triangle labeled in it's place.

tl;dr it's a playstation layout with xbox labels because PC.

The thing is, I don't think this dumb fucker thought he was gambling. If he did, he wouldn't have been on the sub himself either. He was a truly believer in his magnificence. I guess my more direct point is, these people are often motivated more by ego than by greed. At some point these fucks aren't motivated by money, like Musk they're motivated by being Great Men, they they don't actually have the stuff inside of them.

I don't want to be "that guy" but as someone who has never had the privilege of a vacation in 20 years (and is a poor, working stiff) I can't really muster up too much sympathy for "thrill seekers" like this. Call me a "grifter" or "jealous" or whatever.

Honestly, just getting to log in on the KF is my "vacation" and that's my sad reality lol

It's just for bragging rights. There are tons of amazing things to see in the world for far cheaper you've never heard about and I'm sure they didn't either. They seemed to have forgotten though that bragging rights only matter if you actually come back alive. I have a little bit of sympathy for the kid whose Titanic-fascinated father talked him into going, that's about it.

Lts explore that concept of "grifter". Lets actually examine "victim 0" Stockton Rush. Because the more I look at this guy, the more warning bells keep going off.

Just look at pictures of him. Tan, Square Jawed, Perfect Business Hair. He just radiates Corporate CEO.

Supposedly he's a descendent of the Mayflower. His wife is the Great Granddaughter of 2 obscenely wealthy Titanic victims. Famously portrayed in the movie.

His resume includes test pilot aeronautical "engineering", and a host of buzzworthy adventurous things like a comic book billionaire.

But the more we dig into the construction of the Titan, the more bold faced lies we find. Partnered with Boeing and NASA. They never heard of him. He may have bought some out of date Boeing Carbon Fiber material likely through a clearing house. He Patented his magical acoustic safety sensors that made actual physical inspections unecesary. Uh huh.

I'm sorry but everything about this dude reeks of fraud. Who was he really?

Stockton Rush was the youngest of what, 5 kids?
In my experience that kid either gets all the attention, or none.

I know it's agreed upon that reddit is cancer, but I wish some of them would understand that poors and middle class people thrill-seek too.
Surfing on the hood of a friend's car while they drive just doesn't get people talking like questionably engineered submersibles do.

Earlier OceanGate's CEO stood in the same dry dock where the Titanic was built.
Now he's sleeping with the Titanic. Full circle.

Plus if you're interested in Titanic tourism, you can visit the drydock and other historic sites without actually going down to the wreck/grave of the victims. Guess he couldn't be a normie and stick to the historical sites on land (that aren't mass graves)Graves.

It's also sad to think how much the half a mil the Pakistani CEO spent could've been used to help less fortunate Pakistanis. Imagine if that money had been used to help build a school or children's shelter, or provide medicine and safe water, or fight against the oppression of girls and women or child sex trafficking.

The handfeel to me is more like Playstation. I think maybe they were going for a hybrid thing. Some people don't like the way the XBox analog sticks are placed. But in the end it's still bottom of the barrel for controlling a submarine going to crushing depths.

He's either a major charlatan or dumb enough to literally believed he knew better than seasoned experts.

There's been a trend of teens riding on top of subway cars as of late, and I had the same reaction to these billionaires as with them when I hear that they get run over, electrocuted, or smash into a street sign.

"What exactly did you THINK was gonna happen?"

You crazy? who exactly do you think profits from children being ignorant, impoverished starving retards and women being trafficked and abused? he'd be putting half a mil in things that go against his interests.
