Well this song is awesome, so hopefully you’ll like this one.

This song is pretty damn good, though the cover I can do without.

Also, I guess we have this guy to thank for this episode.

Says Todd was given a bunch of requests and he picked Tom Cochrane because it gave him a reason to talk about Canadian music and its industry.
Did an author/screenwriter really suggest this to Todd? I don't why I'm doubtful, because the chances of some known person requesting you something is like a warm fall/winter in the South--very rare.

The Canadian OHW everyone was asking for:
Oh god.. I hate this song so much. They made it our senior high school song without asking... (I was never asked anyway.) That was a hell of a long time ago now, but it is such a bad song. I am actually curious to see what Todd says about it.

Here's the edited reupload, minus the dead air

He's friends with a bunch of the ex-Gawkersphere, random z-list musicians, the EIC of Billboard.com, etc. on top of connections from TGWTG/CA, Patreon and Nebula. Todd knowing a C/D list Hollywood writer isn't so surprising. The whole loner incel hermit bit is just a persona.

Speaking of, I would not be surprised if Nathan Rabin bought a request just to make Todd cover something cringe, as Todd did that to Rabin multiple times.

Considering the price tag of the limited requests, I wouldn’t be surprised.

And with all his friends and connections, I’m kind of surprised that Todd hasn’t been able to make his career in talking about music bigger than YouTube videos and a podcast. And Patreon exclusives.

Do you think he really wants to? He's at a sweet spot of a steady income that can support a comfortable lifestyle in southern California by releasing only one video a month (plus a low effort podcast or two, and a blog). He's maintained his privacy, can go to karaoke at the bar whenever he wants and wake up at noon if he pleases, has his reconstructed dog. The balance of creative output versus income is very good, and has held for almost 15 years. Compared to the manic output of Fantano, he's built a sustainable career (intermittent burnout notwithstanding). For a clown on the Internet with opinions on pop music, it's impressive.

You know how on MATI, Null mentions how Destiny seems to want the status quo to remain forever lest he have to adjust because of a lack of comfort? Todd seems to remind me of that in the way you talked about his current state.

I was shocked to see how much he makes just on Patreon. He currently averages almost $16,000 “a video” (which might actually be a month, but IDK how distinct that is on Patreon)

Even accounting for tax, that’s a good amount for any minor e celeb. Especially for a Channel Awesome alum when most of the others still going are lucky to make enough to cover a pizza delivery every month. For comparison, Lewis and Brad both average $2,000 a month on Patreon

Decent, especially for one income source, but still modest in comparison.

Todd could fully torch his YouTube career at this moment, and if he saved or invested any of it, he’d be completely fine financially. I doubt all of his patrons are legacy or dormant.

I've always thought the secret of Todd's success was ultimately his consistency. His format has remained largely the same, he's stuck to one subject so his audience isn't caught off guard by him "switching it up" too much (but its broad enough to cover variations; i.e. has-beens in the music industry or OHW instead of just current Top 40 hits), and while his humor may have evolved, its still more or less the same. Compared to some of his peers, who have done more experimentation with their videos, which hasn't always been successful.

To be fair, that includes the $9K of requests he just sold. The actual number is closer to $8k per video, which is still a ton of money.
Must be really lucrative to never take any risks.

Just listened to his latest. It reminds me of a tweet someone posted about how you can pin someone's age and how quality their opinions are based on how they feel about canada, israel, and ukraine. The way he tears canada a new asshole makes it feel almost racist. And i'm sure he'd respond "but its true" about his very true claims about canada's content being mostly affirmative action successes. But its still funny how much he just shoved in jabs all over, Also i don't think people mention how amazing it is that this guy went to school for music and ended up making a huge career out of it. Like the common refrain about liberal arts degrees is "what are you going to do with that?" when it turns out for him the answer was be one of the highest paid people in his major. Also am i the only one that just gets addicted to the format? its like chips except if they drained a half hour out of your life.

Only in entertainment do people complain about someone doing the same thing day in and day out for years on end. How many people worked the same job in a factory or in the trades or in an office job for a couple decades before retiring?

You know, I had a thought at work today: Todd reminds me of Lindsay Ellis, but without the delusions of grandeur. Or whatever the Raya bullshit was.

Dude can just make his videos, air takes that aren’t as groundbreaking as his viewers think they are, and take in Patreon money. I think he even said he was at a point where he can just put out a video on anything that interests him in the moment, fuck your algorithm.

That's fair enough. In LA, anything is possible, after all.

A OHW that Todd should consider is "Harden My Heart" by Quarterflash. They actually have three top 40 hits: "Harden My Heart" at #3, "Find Another Fool" at #16 and "Take Me to Heart" at #14. "Harden My Heart" is their only top 10 hit (with their self-titled debut that it came from being their only top 10 album) and is likely well-known than the other ones I listed.

3, 16, and 14. Seem like they’re high enough on the charts for Todd to disqualify them.

In his first post in days, Todd seems to imply that he's leaving X for good in the wake of Trump's win:

(I'm sure it'll definitely last and he definitely won't be back to feed his social media addiction)

Have to say I'm a little disappointed that we (so far) haven't witnessed a 2016-style meltdown.

He's a coward. An entertaining coward, but a coward nonetheless.

ETA: Kid Rock says hi, Todd.
