Tokyo Game Show 2023

For those who missed out the Capcom stream:
During Tokyo Game Show 2023, Capcom unveiled new gameplay information for their upcoming action RPG Dragon’s Dogma II. Firstly, some vocations were highlighted. These are essentially combat classes that can be altered in Guilds.
  • Fighter Vocation – Uses a one-handed sword and shield and excels in melee combat.
  • Archer Vocation – Uses bow and arrow to attack from a distance. Can also use explosive and blinding arrows and aim like a third-person shooter.
  • Mage Vocation – Uses long-range magickal attacks. Can also perform healing and support allies; bolster party with enchantments. Advanced spells take longer incantation times.
  • Thief Vocation – Uses daggers while relying on agility and quick attacks. A notable ability is Swift Step, which can make players quickly move away from enemies after an attack.
The following Advanced Vocations were highlighted:
  • Mystic Spearhand Vocation – Combines magickal attacks and weapon-based physical attacks. Good all-rounder. Uses Duospear at close range and magick at long range. Can also use magick to impede enemy movement and throw multiple items simultaneously.
  • Magick Archer Vocation – Specializes in long-range attacks with magickal arrows. Can also heal and support allies and learn a skill that attacks a wide area by sacrificing some of their own HP.
The environment can also be useful for combat, so players will need to be aware of their surroundings. While exploring, you’ll encounter pawns with quest knowledge who can guide you to the right locations for quests. Pawns will support in various ways, too, such as during combat. However, it’ll be up to players on whether they should follow them.

Players can go on Oxcarts to travel to major locations and close one’s eyes to make the process go by faster. However, you can be attacked en route, so plan accordingly.

Time is always passing, affecting the environment. Nighttime is dangerous with darkness and strong monsters. Camping kits can be used to spend the night and heal.

Regarding the setting, the following two nations were showcased:
  • Vermund – Human Kingdom – Arisen who have slain the Dragon rule as kings here for generations. The landscapes here are full of greenery and meadows.
  • Battahl – Land of Beastren – A rugged canyon nation with a city built on ancient ruins.

Capcom has announced that Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney Trilogy will launch for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC via Windows and Steam on January 25, 2024. Digital pre-orders will begin in Fall 2023.

Players will be able to choose which episodes they want to experience across each title right at the start. Additionally, any chapters can be freely selected within every episode.

All DLC content from Dual Destinies and Spirit of Justice will be included, such as cosmetics, Turnabout Reclaimed, and Turnabout Time Traveler. The Prologue Spirit of Justice animation will also be included. Check out our other article of coverage detailing the contents of the included DLC.

The Museum has bonus features, like the Orchestra Hall housing music selections from each trilogy entry as chibi versions of Phoenix, Apollo, Athena, and Trucy play instruments. 14 songs from orchestral performances are also included.

“The soundtracks of all three games plus 14 select tracks from the Ace Attorney 15th Anniversary Orchestra Concert and the Ace Attorney 2019 Orchestra Concert make for a total of 175 tracks.”
The Art Library boasts the largest collection of art to date, including background images from each game. Completing each title will “unlock illustrations from renowned illustrators” as well as a special one for completing the whole trilogy.

The Animation Studio is a new feature where players can customize the animations, voices, music, and backgrounds to produce results ordinarily impossible in the story. Lastly, those simply wanting to experience the story can choose Story Mode to have the game play through the cases for them.

There is an interesting interview conference at the TGS 2023 about the PC market in Japan.

Japan as the fastest growing PC market.pngMain stage.png
Translating the most important points:
-The people present on stage were Pierre-Loup Griffais and Erik Peterson (both working at Valve), William Yagi-Bacon (from Capcom) and Katsuhiro Harada (from Bandai Namco)
-Japan has become the fastest-growing PC market in the past 5 years, with millions of japanese Steam users registered. The ability to purchase a game and keep it forever, no generational restrictions (like on consoles) and the lack of subscriptions is what turned more japanese folks into PC gaming lately.
-About 40% of the users of Elden Ring and Armored Core VI are PC users. Even in console competitive games such as Tekken, about 30% are PC users.
-Steam Deck has apparently met success in Japan, as reported by the two Valve employees, and is the perfect match with the rise of the PC platform there. They said they're motivated in bringing future japanese games to be fully compatible with Valve's handheld.

As a side note, Harada-san expressed he wanted AI (or whatever tool) to be further improved in order to check up translation & localization errors in other languages.

I cant believe theyre seriously making Izuna 3 after all these years.

In other related Success news, they also finally dropped the Heaven Seeker trailer. Honestly really happy they leaned harder on the danmaku aspect than the roguelite aspect.

Very pleasantly surprised, i really enjoyed these on the DS, surprisingly not as coomerbait as the official artwork would lead you to believe

Dragons Dogma 2 preview gives me hope for the future. Mostly tuned into the D3 Publisher stream searching for significant EDF news.

What classes were there?
Warrior, thief and archer. I only had 15 minutes so I went warrior.

Edit - I'll write up some opinions tomorrow but I'm on my way home now and I'm dead on my feet. I got about 4 hours sleep last night, I've been up since 530 and I won't get home probably until 9 at the earliest. I'm fucking beat.

One sentence impression. Feels like DD in a good way, pawns no longer seem retarded.
