I'm aware of that, but I don't really get why it is that way, but in 1887 down here in the US we passed the Interstate Commerce Act, giving congress the power to regulate interstate trade. Which happened largely due to big rail road companies fucking people over, so we don't really have any interstate trade barriers like you Canadians have up there. A lot of early American history involved the federal Government not having enough power to do simple things and the states being too selfish to corrupt to share as they'd always look out for their own interests over the national intersts.
So to me, hearing Canada has inter provincial tarrifs at all is really weird, especially when you guys are so reliant on the US, you think erasing inter provincial trade barriers and trying to be united as possible would be the goal.

The EU has it's own problems, mainly that all of their businesses are moving to the US right now and they already tarrif America, their strongest ally who has a lot of leverage over them. So I guess it's technically an option, just not a good one.

I think it's pretty clear that while his 51st state thing is hyperbole, Trump does seriously want to further integrate Canada with America by having Canadian protectionism laws repealed and these Tarrifs were just to force Canada to the bargaining table. That would then work alongside the new Sovereign Wealth Fund to have America influence Canadian politics even more. Of course there's been a wave(?) of anti-american recently, like there is whenever Americas stick their nose into Canada so of course the Canadians want to become more economically independent.
But that's a lose-lose scenario, either protectionism laws targeted against the US are repealed and Canada becomes even more of a collection of future US states or Canada fights back as hard as it can and crashes it's economy by not playing ball. Ideally American wouldn't care enough to bother Canada at all, but we live a world where Justin Trudeau exists and has antagonized an American president while allowing drugs to flow into the country.
I've seen some people say Canada will find other partners, but I'ms seriously curious as to who they could go to. The UK is a staunch US ally, the EU already has tarrifs against the US while being a big ally so buddying up to them won't do anything. China and Russia are terrible options as Canada allying with them is a security threat that might force the US hand. Although I guess there India?

Canada has nowhere else to go. We literally share a land border and their trade is built around trucking. People thinking they can go North Korea and just trade via the sea is reddit brained cope. It's why Trudeau buckled, and why Trump is doing things like the Sovereign Wealth Fund- he knows what cards he has.

NHTSA is also a method of indirectly keeping domestic manufactures secure. If they were serious they'd crackdown on the bajillion LED headlights that blind you while driving in the rain at night.
