My hypothesis is that animals have an issue with hormone bullshit. Hormones are a thing they use for communication. We use them too to an extend but less so. To an extend yes but I doubt it is the entire picture. If the pet owners noticed the troons/poons abuse the animals, they would have done something. Dogs are incredibly perceptive and there's a decent chance your friend is also just racist and the dog is picking up on that. Especially if the friend is a woman who would be more worried about certain types of people than others more than a man would. Or the dog's just racist.

This is even more true for cats, one of the animals that are not only predators themselves but also prey. They can recognize predatory behavior as something they engage in themselves.
