A YouTuber has been jailed for six months for deliberately crashing his plane for views, and then lying about it to US investigators.
Trevor Jacob, 30, posted the video of the plane crash in December 2021, implying it was an accident. He ejected from the plane - selfie stick in hand - and parachuted down to land.
The clip was viewed millions of times.
In a plea agreement, Jacob said he filmed the video as part of a product sponsorship deal.
The former Olympic snowboarder pleaded guilty earlier this year to one felony count of destruction and concealment with the intent to obstruct a federal investigation.
Jacob "most likely committed this offence to generate social media and news coverage for himself and to obtain financial gain", federal prosecutors in California said on Monday.
"Nevertheless, this type of 'daredevil' conduct cannot be tolerated," they added.

In a statement, Jacob said that "this experience has been so humbling" and described the sentence as the "right decision".

In November 2021, Jacob left a Santa Barbara, California, airport on a solo flight with cameras mounted on his plane. Along with the cameras, Jacob took a parachute with him, as well as a selfie stick.
He "did not intend to reach his destination, but instead planned to eject from his aircraft during the flight and video himself parachuting to the ground and his airplane as it descended and crashed", the US Attorney's Office for the Central District of California said.
The plane crashed into the Los Padres National Forest 35 minutes after take-off. Jacob hiked to the site and recovered the footage.
He then uploaded the video entitled "I crashed my airplane" to YouTube on 23 December, which contained a promotion for a wallet company, prosecutors said.
Some viewers were sceptical of the crash, noting that Jacob was already wearing a parachute and made no attempt to land the plane safely.

He reported the crash to the National Transportation Safety Board, who said he was responsible for preserving the wreckage. Jacob later claimed he did not know the location of the site.
He did, and returned by helicopter and secured and removed the wreckage, which he later destroyed, the plea agreement states.
The video racked up almost three million views before it was removed.

Shame this precedent had to be set, and shame he survived the attempt. That national forest is a fucking tinderbox and it's only the lack of fuel in the aircraft that likely prevented a forest fire.

Simply being on the level of being able to take a plane out whenever he liked is a level of freedom most will never see. The fact he fucked all that up for... youtube views? is just beyond me.

People in the comments sections saying he didn't get his license back and he is talking bullshit.
He probably fooled a instructor to give him a temporary license or he's flying without one, which is clearly a high possibility since he doesn't give a shit.

This faggot would’ve given the feds his grandmother on a silver platter if that was one their conditions for the deal. He did interviews in jail saying that it was good and right for them to lock him up. On one hand, lmao because this is a kid who you can tell had absolutely zero fear about breaking laws and 6 months is still 6 months. On the other hand the feds are so obnoxious with the way they make examples of people by prioritizing the prosecution of dumb bullshit like this. for some reason this reminds me of when they arrested all those rich people for bribing to get their kids into usc. Total waste of taxpayer money and just a ways for the feds to flex on a slam dunk case that probably deterred zero crime. Why would he bother getting his license back if he doesn't plan on using it?

Also I'm not sure why you're trivializing this. He crashed a fucking plane in the woods smack in the middle of wildfire season in a particularly bad year.

I’m not trivializing what he did. He posted that he got his license back before he even went into prison. That’s very different than applying for it/ getting reinstated after he served his sentence. I’m betting that after spending 6 months locked up and most certainly told informally to never fly again by the feds and perhaps even formally as part of the deal, he won’t do it.

I think you have a lot of faith in an absolute asshole who is completely irresponsible. If they wanted him not to fly the FAA could simply have NOT given him back his license, which is an act of absolute insanity, in the vague hopes that he won't actually use it.
