Trolling Ethics Debate Thread

Chris is just a unique case. Instead of debating ethical/unethical, I'm starting to wonder more about when Barb passes an actual major crisis happens and what, if any role we should have or play in Chris's life at that point.

The fire response was great, but that's a transient tragedy. Luckily neither Chris nor Barb were actually injured as a result. I don't feel we have any obligation to Chris beyond discouraging weenery as much as possible and not making his life a living hell. Where are we really going from here?

If possible, I'd like to hear ethics not of the past but of the future instead. Should there be any role going forward for Chris?

I've actually thought about this, but there's no easy answer. The problem is the same one every single white knight has run into: Chris does not listen to people. I don't know how many people Chris has in his life who will help him make the right choice, but the problem is unless they have something they can hold over his head or threaten him with (ala Barb) he won't listen unless it's something he already wants to do.

The unclit thing is a perfect example. Catherine (and Renee, before she disengaged, if I recall correctly) were both telling him to take it out and he flat out ignored them. You can go back and forth about whether we have any obligation to him, but if he won't listen to us (and he won't) what can we do? We can't force him to make the right choices.

The most irritating thing, to me at least, is that his life doesn't need to spiral out of control. He's getting 1300 dollars a month right now, and if he gets a similar tugboat boost after Barb passes on, he could easily live off it with a little budgeting and being careful. He just...doesn't know how to budget.

I see Chris as being a bit of a village idiot figure. Initially everyone was just amused by how stupid the village idiot was, what he could be made to do, and his bizarre and unpredictable behaviour when left alone. The extent of it just became such that he became a hobby to everyone else in the village, and it actually became a double-edged sword the longer time went on because although some people just wanted to laugh at the village idiot's antics and provoke more by any means necessary, an increasing number wanted to stop him being an idiot altogether and see him live an ordinary life. Even though things started out on a completely different track, what the latter group started doing was trying to take care of Chris and mitigate the damage he necessarily does to himself through his idiocy (think the fire package). It's turned into a mutually beneficial relationship in my opinion, one where the trolling (as opposed to weening) is balanced out by the good things Chris is getting out of being a well-known idiot. He's made a lot of cash this year from selling drawings and medallions to people who laugh at him on the internet. I don't think there will ever be another Julay saga because I think everyone is aware that the lulz from Chris are drying up, and there's more of an effort to look after him for longer so that he sticks around and provides more amusement, rather than everyone simply trying to destroy him.

tl;dr Chris benefits from his notoriety as much as he suffers for it.

Actually, this very thing happened. During my interactions with Chris, several ill-intentioned trolls tried to get to him. Some of these attempts were unbelievably elaborate.

Anyway, I exposed them. (I'm not saying this absolves me or vindicates me in any way, just thought I'd throw it out there. @Null and @KatsuKitty can back this up. I sent them screen caps of the trolling attempts.)
Just curious: how many trolling attempts do you think are regularly launched against Chris?

The original True and Honest internet lolcow?

You know that the answer is too many.
Yeah I'm just curious about now, considering that the organized sagas ended three years ago.

Are you talking actual orginized attempts, or just lame weens?

Who knows?

Well I'm curious as to Thetan's idea since she mentioned it. But I guess every ween thinks his weening is a great trolling idea, at least at the beginning, so I would include those as well.

Just to explicitly state it in this thread - we now have the information relevant and important to this ethical issue that telling Chris he's being trolled by fake personas has no effect.
When a gal pal tells him she's trolling him, he believes her messages are being intercepted and sent by a troll. When the same female persona then resumes patting his ass, he's like "Oh! You're back! The troll is gone!".

This thread is great. Look, trolling is shitty but we all obviously have ethics that are flexible, to say the least. We all post on a website dedicated to the antics of CWC! Guys like Skyraider, ABL and Marv are interesting and fun to read. Sky is not really trolling 'ol Chris in the way of the old days. But he's fine and, frankly, he's had closer contact with the Chandlers than we and thus knows more. If you were not interested in CWC then you wouldn't be posting in this forum and in this thread. If this is crime then I'm guilty as rest of the posters here. I don't' mind. Chris will always be the best troll and the content creator.

He could start by going back to wearing Clown Shirts. That'd be an improvement.

I presume you'll continue the stony silence, @Thetan?

I'm thinking about answering him, and posting the conversations here. Maybe this way, it will sink in that Renee is a troll.

I should have been more clear. I'm ***thinking*** about this. I want to know what other people think.

Part of me thinks Chris needs to know, but just telling him outright doesn't seem like the way to go.

So, he "realizes" the trolls are hacking into Renee's phone -- but decides to continue texting to her anyway, knowing the trolls are listening.

I understand a lot of people have been getting on at you about ethics, but personally I think continuing to not respond is the option which most clearly shows Renee isn't real.
Yet, now that we know how thick his delusion is, it makes it look like he'll believe anything Renee says to him now.
So maybe Renee could even get away with telling him to upload a video modelling himself or something. *sigh*

No, Renee never tried to get Chris to humiliate himself (and she never will). I just don't want to go that route.

Renee was always meant to be a sort of voice of reason. I don't mind giving him advice on his personal hygiene / grooming, or improving his social skills, but that's as far as I'm willing to go.

Honestly, use your best judgement here. I recall you saying you didn't want the level of commitment that Chris requires of a TRUE and HONEST galpal so I'm certainly not going to harp on you either way.

Although I would so love to see the actual conversations. *sigh* Gotta be me.

But keep in mind, he's not technically sophisticate. He could just as easily assume that the trolls have access to everything because they hacked his phone or whatever and not think anything of you finally replying to him and then seeing it posted here. I'm sure it's all too easy for him to dismiss this Thetan person as a troll who wants his sweet Renee.:heart-empty:

Edit: Also, I imagine if you do reply, his first response will be wall 'o text.

Okay. In that case, my vote is for continued silence.

Edit: Or Marvin's suggestion of telling him once, that's a nice middle ground option which can be followed by silence.
