Turning Red thread

Honest to God for everyone thinking this film is a metaphor for puberty or getting your period It’s not. I get it, ‘turning red’ she turns red when she goes through ‘strong emotions’ yadda yadda hah yeah I get it seems so obvious but really it isn’t. Menstruation pads are mentioned but once I repeat only once in a side gag early on in the film. It’s never mentioned again at any point during the films run. If you want to hate this film for not liking it’s weird plot, thinking the characters are lame and cringey and not liking the ‘Calarts’ (groan) bean look to the characters then fine. But all these accusations of it being a pedo film for ‘déviants and furries’ are insane especially coming from here.

This isn’t Twitter guys, it’s a friggin silly kids film, I thought we’d be smarter than this. It is not worth remotely getting this vitriolic about, we should be getting pissed at scummy movie businesses and lack of creativity in so many films but not this. It’s insane.

There were literal CNN shill pieces about the movie being a metaphor for puberty.

If it seems a obvious metaphor but it isn't, then the people behind this movie did a really bad job with said metaphor.

I'm not gonna clutch my pearls for this silly movie, miss me with this shit, but The "red panda" it is a obvious metaphor for puberty, and no one would honestly say that the obvious use of red, be the title, panda or the color the main character uses, can't be correlated to menstruation, which is THE main sign of a girl becoming a woman, it is, and no, it doesn't matter if the movie made menstruation jokes.

Now, I would say that the whole Red Panda metaphor feels clunky and tone deaf. The whole thig about the panda transformation being tied to emotions goes away mid movie, when the main girl can turn back and forth whenever she needs, and the Panda only becomes a inconvenience once again when it suits the low point closure of the act 2. And yes, when the girls use the Panda to gain money is a eyebrown raiser, like I said, it is obvious they have tied the red panda thing with Mei's puberty, which means her sexuality, so you can't be upset when people drive the rather obvious line between Mei selling her Panda form to prostitution.

And no, I'm not gonna do the "ur dur, holywood libs are a bunch of groomers", I honestly don't give a singular fuck about this culture war shit nor i have a youtube channel to make money out of it. And I also don't see malice behind "Turning Red" either, it feels like a personal movie for the director that does try to deal with certain themes that Pixar haven't done before.

But I will say the movie does a poor job with it's main theme, some of the tone deaf decision on the plot come as rather bizarre, and it feels like the script wasn't challegend enough to a point where these incongruences would have been ironed out.

The meme is the best thing that came out of this movie.
However I'm seeing shills people come out of the woodwork to do this "Now people will give it a better chance" shtick when the whole thing stemmed from some guy's dumb take
For example (starts at 1:20):

It's like it started as an comedienne's Netflix comedy special, relating how difficult it was to grow up as an upper-middle class Asian with attentive parents in post-9/11 Canada, but it somehow got retooled into a cartoon about magic pandas.

I dunno. Even my really dumb friend who misses everything told me the film was about periods.

I haven't seen it though, but if *he* saw it I have a hard time believing it's *that* subtle or not there.
It's explicitly spelled out in incredibly obvious terms very early on. Then the rest of the movie happens, and it's hard to know what we're supposed to make of it. The plot is inane and retarded on the surface, but reading it allegorically doesn't exactly help.

Jesus Christ what is it’s about this movie that had turned this into a Twitter thread, It’s just a silly children’s film about a girl turning into a tiny red panda, it’s not like it’s a Cambodian genocide, the vitriol this harmless and fairly sweet children’s film has caused from all over Twitter and even here is insane. Sure the characters may look a but weird with their bean mouth look, but I actually kind of enjoy the style, Luca used this look to perfection and was a beautiful film with its scenery and unique cartoony look. It may not work here as well but I still think it’s a unique and interesting art style for a Pixar film.

So many Pixar films have a beautiful but ‘Samey’ look to them now since their obsession with sequels, like Toy Story 4 looks like an updated version of the previous films but with beautiful new photorealistic textures and lighting. This new changup of style is a breath of clean air and I hope they try more stuff like this in the future. It’s not worth getting this pissed at Jesus people.
But it's not new, this is the same regurgitated style I've seen every other dogshit 3d movie use.

If you want unique and cool, look at lupin the third the first, that's stylized and unique.

The Simpsons is an "adult" comedy show that satirizes suburban living. Or at least it was back in the day. It isn't a general-audience movie targeting children with a main focus on puberty.

Tbh I would rather not have sexualized minors in any capacity. The Simpsons doing it doesn't make it okay either.
Irrc the simpsons was pg 13 also the show didnt feel really adult tbh i mean its not south park but still its creepy to have minors shaking their asses

Okay, even without the dumb puberty shit, it's still a movie with little substance and weak motivations and a flimsy attempt to set itself in 2002. If they didn't half-ass that and set it in 2022 they could've used social media in the story as a tool, considering that the red panda goes unbelievably viral and promotes shitty dances throughout the city anyway. You can almost imagine the phones they wanted to put into the kids' hands before remembering nobody had a fucking smart phone back then.

Its pretty easy to grasp what to make of it. Its an extremely privileged self-obsessed narcissist millennial whores self-insert where she told her mother off, something she never did in real life, for bothering to care about and want the best for her as she entered puberty.

That is all it is. Its at best mediocre by fanfiction.net writing standards, but was given a Pixar budget because nepotism. Any other meaning beyond that is completely unintended or forced by the observer.

This feels like an issue with most writers in animation nowadays. Many want to do the darker subject material and more adult stories of the works they grew up with, yet lack the foresight to see what they may be implying. Take something like Steven Universe. It has been tied to groomer shit, but most of it just seems like poor foresight and them wanting to make things more intelligent than they are. Fusion in that show worked well as a means to depict a relationship, but some writer wanted to make it a metaphor for sex, probably without thinking about how 2 children did it, all for the purpose of seeming smart on Twatter. Turning Red is likely just another millennial/Zoomer project designed to try and one up the more adult stories of the 90s and 00s, but without the intelligence to do so.

The term you looking for is "immaturity". These millennial/Zoomer projects are filled to the brim with perpetual teenagers desperate to be adults, but completely fail because they lack real learning experiences (life conflict) and the ability to self-reflect. The key elements that turns someone into a mature adult. Hence why a tiger mom who was really doing her best to raise a good kid by putting in the time and effort to be a strict parent, was transformed into a unsympathetic tyrant by an ungrateful little shit.

Again, its because they all grew up in the lap of luxury and never had to face real conflicts in life until they were done physically maturing. Social media has only made it worse because you can find a crowd of any assholes willing to hugbox someone for literally any perceived or real slight/conflict/negative trait. Hence why all these creators react so poorly to criticism and put out such sub-standard products.

It’s not even that bad a style, it’s overused and repetitive af yes, but the bean mouth look isn’t inherently ugly rather than oversaturated, Oh Noe! Bean mouth is the ugliest art style ever! like get real, there are far worse looking animated films out there. Ever heard of FoodFight, Bobbleheads,The New Pinocchio film? people claiming this as the biggest animation eyesore in the market don’t know the true horrors of the animation bargain bin.

Even with it’s weird style it’s still got a pretty color palette and has the typical brilliant textures and lighting you see in any Pixar film, you could do much worse compared to other studios.

Definitely agree that it would have worked better as a miniseries on Disney +. This would have given the characters and plot enough time to develop, along with the world around it.

I think otherwise, it could have stuck to being a slice of life plot rather than having a giant monster fight at the end.

How sad is it that like alot of current year culture the most turning red will be remembered for is the memes it generated. First because it was a Pixar movie about periods, then all because one lolcow raised a fuss about how a movie set in 2002 isn't a genuine reflection of reality?
