Shocked to see someone like the Killing, since it was a huge fucking flop and one of the first major flops for AMC.

The show's first season was highly reworked from the original Danish version with a bunch of god-awful filler and they explicitly lied to the public about wrapping up the plot at the end of the season, having it end with a bullshit cliffhanger and forcing people to sit through another season just to find out who the murderer was (meaning more filler). It basically got the show canceled and the only reason it got resurrected on Netflix was due to Joel Kinnaman being under a long term contract and was getting movie offers from Hollywood (as he was the only thing on the show people liked) so the production company made a deal with Netflix to do two more seasons, purely to ring the last couple of sheckles out of Kinnaman's ass before he became a free agent.
Maybe because I didn't watch it until it was all on netflix so I could burn through 4 eps at a time on gym days (and didn't have to wait for reason 2) but the red herrings and cliff hangers didn't bother me very much. Only thing that really bothered me, beyond the usual shit that plagues a TV show's writing, was the obvious Danish remaps that didn't fully go, like Somalis = Turks or whatever Sand niggers infest denmark, lady detective being exiled to ferry duty, etc. I've forgotten a lot of the details, I just know I didn't hate it.

I'd cut cable during the original air run, so being removed from any hype or promotional shenanigans and only seeing it/being aware of its existance via showing up in Netflix's Recommend probably explains variance in enjoyment.

What if instead of using gay faggot pink laser guns or gay faggot laser swords you could just blast at the (((Goa'uld))) full auto with a P90? It's motherfucking STARGATE time faggot!!!
This but unironically.

Toss in some more shows from the 00s:

1 Damages: Glenn Close is great in this and it gave us Rose Byrne Really awesome show about high stake litigation and Close gives a great performance as far as morally ambiguous anti-heroes who keeps viewers guessing as to her true motives. Not to mention that the show raised Ted Danson's career from the dead and finally made it so that he was able to fully transition into dramatic roles and villain roles.

2. Veronica Mars: basically a show that had SO much potential but Rob Thomas kept fucking it up time and time again, as if he was scared shitless of having a hit show (and executive meddling didn't help him out either). Basically Twin Peaks but with class warfare instead of Dynasty-style drama over who runs the local lumber mill as the main subplot, it gave us Kristen Bell, Kyle Gallner, and the guy who went on to write Sicario and Yellowstone (who worked on the show a bit actor back before he transitioned to writing full time).

3. Arrested Development; aka the Soap rip-off that became an overnight sensation/cult hit that everyone loved until the hype backlash from the clusterfuck of a fourth season killed interest in the series. The show has a lot of funny moments even if, when watched again/marathoned, you realize half the problems could be solved if the characters actually sat down and explained shit to each other.

4. Supernatural: the first five seasons are great though the later ones are YMMV. The first season is a super chore to get through (with huge gaps between relevant lore episodes) and the fact that the writer strike led to the show runner retooling the show to feature angels and Satan. Again, stop at season five for a decent end point if you don't want to wade though a show trying to find a reason to continue to exist once the main story ends.

5. Power Rangers SPD: Basically the ballsiest show ever made under the Power Rangers banner as it features a plot that basically amounts to "hiding your power level at work to get ahead" combined with "Affirmative Action Doen't Work" as the central theme of the season/series. You'd never get it made today and and perhaps the most shocking of things, it's also one if not THE most popular seasons post-Mighty Morphing and alongside Zeo and In Space, the only post-Mighty Morphing season/show to get merchandise.

shows from the 2010s

mr.robot. imo it was a combination of an excellent concept and sjw nonsense. this show is an example where the showrunner couldn't help himself and inject it with scenes that did not need to be there. for instance, when the tech execs were joking about people getting ahead using gay sex, tyrell yelled really loud "your fired". that scene did not add anything to the story or to the character. i thought it was just a sjw fantasy to get back at the chuds. there are other instances in mr.robot that repeat this sjw fantasy. even looking past it, i can only recommend the first season episodes 1 and 10. the second season was too bland for me. the third season was when they rebooted the series and literally erased the S1E10 finale. this erased all the consequence of destroying all the world economy and plunging the world into financial disaster. that ruined the entire series for me. because of that, i could not watch the last season.

game of thrones. there is nothing i can say that already has been said about this show. just watch the first 4 seasons and pretend that the show got canceled after that.

mindhunter. its like watching zodiac by david fincher (the show was produced by him and he directed some episodes) if it were a 10 hour long movie. it was a slow burn, heavy dialog driven, and literally no action takes place but i really liked the show. it is a shame it lasted for only two seasons.

fargo. i can only recommend the first 3 seasons overall. the showrunners have done a great job in capturing the coen brothers look and feel for a tv show. season 1 especially for billy bob thorton and the season 1 finale decision to make molly solverson not go after lorne malvo, but for her husband to do it instead. a lot of feminist got mad about this but this works perfectly to show how the molly character only cared about getting the job done and not the credit for it. season 2 is an acquired taste. i have not watched the fourth season.

Continuing my dumb shit comedy I still love:

Drawn Together

A animated comedy show from 2004-2007 this was a parody of reality tv shows by throwing a bunch of characters from different animation styles/show together. Probably one of the raunchiest, racist, and crude shows Comedy Central has every put together and I loved every single second of it. If you need a detox from the current year culture just slap on any random episode and remember the good times when people could be fun and the target audience was males 14-28. Force a Zoomer to watch it and enjoy the meltdown.

Just squeaking in before the 2010 deadline is Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles.
ts2.jpg

Very well written and Lena Heady is superb in the title role. She looks every bit as good as Linda Hamilton in TS2 but frankly is more of a badass. Not because of action scenes or choreography but because of the decisions she makes and level of compassionate ruthlessness that leaves you honestly a little intimidated. She's a good person in a life or death situation making plans and decisions to protect her son. Also, unlike most adolescent males in modern media, John Connor is not a whiny brat but someone actually sympathetic and very capable. Whilst he's young in this you can see the makings of a future leader and the actor does a really good job of not making you hate him.

As to Summer Glau as the "good" terminator, she's pretty good. She also gets a small number of episodes very much focused on her. 'Alison From Palmdale' and 'Self-Made Man' are some of Summer Glau's best performances. The latter in particular as you are left wondering just how self-aware she is.

Frankly, it also doesn't hurt that the show has these two front and centre:

Writing does go a bit nuts mid-season 2. Apparently there was a writer's strike. :/

@MirrorNoir is right about Supernatural's first 5 seasons, I've only cried a couple of times watching a tv show but the scene where Dean explains what happened to him when he...uh...disappeared...gets me every time.

Supernatural- Others have said it best. Only the first 5 seasons are worth anything.

Terminator: TSCC- Loved that show. Lena Headey and Summer Glau both put in excellent performances while being incredibly easy on the eyes.

My Name Is Earl- A low-life idiot wins a small fortune in the lottery, and decides to right the wrongs of his past. Jason Lee is great as the title character, Ethan Suplee is hilarious as his even stupider brother, and Jamie Pressley steals the show entirely as Earl's ex-wife. Love this show, and highly recommend it.

Malcolm in the Middle- Incredibly dark, misanthropic, utterly HILARIOUS sitcom that made a star out of Bryan Cranston. I have this one on my personal Sitcom Mount Rushmore alongside Scrubs, Married With Children, and South Park.

Yeah, I would say the writer's strike killed that show. It was was pretty decent, though!

I will go British and list my favorites from the aughts.

Garth Marenghi's Darkplace

The Might Boosh

That Mitchell and Webb Look

Snuff Box

Peep Show

Man to Man with Dean Learner

The IT Crowd

Most Extreme Elimination Challenge (MXC) was such a silly concept that worked. Maybe it was my love of, the available English dub, Godzilla movies that drew me to it. The writing for characters like Captain Tenneal is stuff that is now considered based.

While I can understand if you basically fast forwarded through Tyrell's scenes, if you did, you missed the entire point of Tyrell firing the middle management exec-bros who were talking about people fucking guys to advance their careers.

Tyrell basically fucked another guy a couple of episodes prior to the scene to further his own career and agenda and him snapping and randomly firing the guys was the pay-off to that B-Plot since Tyrell was disgusted with himself and the fact that he secretly liked fucking said guy. It's a running subplot that Tyrell is a closet case and basically in love with Elliot (his dialogue with Elliot is super homo-erotic and in his last episode before they finally killed him off*, they even have him go on a rant yelling at Elliot for dressing like a slob and asking why he doesn't dress in fancy designer clothing for Tyrell in terms of Tyrell wanting his crush to look pretty for him).

*Tyrell was supposed to have died at the end of season one when the 5/11 hack is carried out and his body found the following season ass the public fall guy for Elliot. But fans liked Tyrell so much that the writers decided to reveal that Elliot had spared him and brought him back; though because the actor assumed he was done with the series, he had booked a couple of movie roles and the writers had to wait until the end of season two to bring Tyrell back.

Snuff Box
I love Snuff Box, especially with it's backstory. The network that aired it had a show fall through/couldn't air at the last minute and they needed something ASAP to fill the gap. So Matt Berry was asked to put together a show at the last minute for the network, which promised to air it no matter what due to their desperation, resulting in probably Matt Berry's magnum opus.

Carnivale was a solid show I’m still a bit salty over being cancelled before the story reached its conclusion. Still very much worth watching however.

If you don't have the time to binge all of the season, I think season 3 is a good start because there's when the money heist arc started and this arc will be the reason of Vic's crew break apart.

Season 1 & 2 were pretty good but it was more like "monster of the week" kinda thing. The rest of the season 3 through 7 is definitely worth the watch.

Monk
Ex-police officer now private detective with severe OCD helps the police with solving really difficult crimes.
It's really funny and the crimes and ways in which Monk solves them are quite inventive.
Monk's getting a reunion movie: https://www.nbcdfw.com/entertainmen...to-return-soon-with-movie-on-peacock/3358155/
Comes out Dec 8 on Peacock

I’m in the midst of rewatching Psych. It’s good comedy/crime of the week show, and I really enjoy when they do particular episodes as an homage to something, like the Twin Peak-style episode.

Also didn’t realize they had three movies of it continuing the show after it ended.
I saw the first 2 and they were pretty good. Shame Tim Omundson got sick and couldn't really be in the first one though. I keep meaning to watch the third and keep forgetting.

Drake & Josh is the live-action show I remember most from the 2000s, funnily enough. They just don't make sitcoms like that anymore, especially buddy shows about normal guys.

Watching Boston Legal with my wife who has never seen it before. Jesus what an absolute time capsule of mid 2000's, I love it. Its not a great show by any means, but when it lets Spader, Shatner and Bergen play off each other its TV gold. Its hamfisted approach to the days social issues are preachy, but I overlook that when basically all of Shatners lines make me laugh. I wish the side characters werent such shit. The associates in S2 are basically nothing characters, and Brad/Mark Valley has good chemistry with the main cast, I just wish he was utilized earlier (I know he gets more storylines later). I also forgot how abruptly season 1 ended, apparently because of Grays Anatomy they had to retool the final 5 episodes into season 2, which causes some cast that left to just appear out of nowhere 10 episodes later.

Also James Spader should really do audiobooks, I could listen to him talk for hours.
